£50.00Greetings to a City (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Bliss, Arthur - Hindmarsh, Paul
Sir Arthur Bliss (1891 - 1975) was a significant composer and pillar of the British musical establishment. Although Born in London, his father was from the United States and both countries were important in his life and career. A pupil of Stanford at the Royal College of Music, Bliss travelled to the United States with his father in 1923, taking a prominent part in Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge's Pittsfield Music Festival, as well as undertaking some teaching and conducting. In 1925 he married Trudy Hoffman and they returned to the UK early in 1926. Bliss's most influential scores were his ballets and film scores. In 1953 Sir Arthur was appointed Master of the Queen's Music, after which he added a steady stream of fanfares and ceremonial works to his list of works. In 1960 he was commissioned by the American Wind Symphony of Pittsburgh, which requested for festive work to feature on an extensive European tour, including a performance in London.Bliss scored Greetings to a City for antiphonal brass, a choir each of 2 trumpets, 2 horns and three trombones, with tuba and percussion. This adaptation for brass band instruments retains an element of antiphony, emphasing the contrast between the fanfare instruments (cornets and trombones) and the horns and tubas. 2012 National Championships Finals - Fourth Section. The four movement work quotes hallowed poets and prose writers. The first movement uses Robert Burns's 'When Chill November's surly blast made field and forest bare' - a musical depiction of a Scottish highland landscape in crisp mid-winter. Movement 2 takes Dylan Thomas's 'Though lovers be lost, love shall not' and showcases soloists performing their individual love stories, finishing with an adaptation of the Welsh national anthem, whilst the third movement quotes the Irish poer, Yeats. The music links the Isle of Man and Ireland, opening with the Manx national anthem and traditional Manz dancing, before leading to a Dublin dance scene. Movement 4 quotes Shakespeare's 'Be not afraid of greatness', opening with a fanfare by percussion, then moving into Holst's In the Bleak Mid Winter and to the seventh variation of Elgar's Enigma Variations, Nimrod.

Fanfare of Joy was commissioned by the Burbage Band (Buxton) and its conductor Steven Critchlow in 2017. Based on Joy to the World and The First Nowell, this spectacular work opens with a majestic brass fanfare, before breaking in a Celtic-style dance which builds to a dramatic conclusion. The fanfare opening serves to announce the arrival of something special. In this case, the fanfare announces the arrival of Christmas, a time of joy and celebration. The Celtic-style dance is a lively and energetic movement that captures the spirit of Christmas. The music is full of syncopated rhythms and intricate melodies, driven by percussion. The final movement of the piece is a dramatic conclusion that brings the work to a rousing finish. The music is full of excitement and energy, and a fitting celebration of the Christmas season. £30.15Fanfare from La Peri(Brass Band) Dukas arr. Rob Bushnell
La Peri is a one-act ballet by the French composer Paul Dukas, best known for The Sorcerer's Apprentice (L'apprenti sorcier) as in the 1940 Disney film Fantasia. Dukas was commissioned to write La Peri by the Ballets Russes, producing a Poeme danse en un tableau ('dance poem in one scene') in 1911; this become his last published work. With Natalia Trouhanova due to play the Peri and Vaslav Nijinsky to play Iskender (the name of Alexander the Great in Persian, who is scouting around Iran in search of the Flower of Immortality), the production was ultimately cancelled because Serge Diaghilev feel Trouhanova was not a skilled enough dancer to be partnered to Nijinsky. Trouhanova later hired Ivan Clustine to choreograph the music, with the ballet premiering at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris on 22 April 1912.The brilliant fanfare that precedes the ballet is often performed separately and is the arrangement available here. Arranged for British-style brass band, it has optional percussion parts as well as alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. Fanfare for a New Era is the most substantial of Edward Gregson's fanfares and was the result of a private commission by Lady Sheila Stoller to celebrate the opening in April 2017 of the Stoller Hall at Chetham's School of Music, Manchester. Gregson dedicated it to Sir Norman Stoller, who donated the funding for the new concert hall. The Fanfare was designed to fill the whole space, with separate brass choirs - trumpets, horns, trombones and tuba - playing their own music. A solo trumpeter playing 'on high' announces first the four horns and timpani, who enter with a stately measure. Next the herald trumpeter ushers in trombones, tuba and drums, with a faster dance. Finally, the remaining three trumpets amplify the peeling of bells. All four elements then come together, surrounding the audience with a 'joyful noise' of festive brass and percussion.Duration: 3.00

La Peri is a 1912 ballet in one act by French composer Paul Dukas, about a man's search for immortality and encounter with a mythological Peri (a winged, fairy-like creature). The original music to La Peri was written in 1911 as a Poeme Danse En Un Tableau (Dance Poem in One Scene), and was his last published work. The ballet itself is preceded by this brilliant fanfare which is often performed separately. This arrangement is for full brass band, and would make a good opener for any concert or event. VIEW SCORE PDF Gobsmacked was commissioned by Ravnanger Brass Band (Norway). The composer Robbert Vos writes: 'Gobsmacked is composed as an opening or encore piece which, as the title already reveals, is meant to surprise or overwhelm the audience! After a brief opening fanfare, the main theme is introduced by the solo cornet and euphonium. An accelerando leads to a quick movement, where this main theme is transformed into a con brio. In this section there's a lot of energy to be unleashed and every band member plays a roll in creating that. Throughout the piece there are many surprises, for example some unexpected time changes, percussion effects to wake you and some trombone glissandi to make you smile. After a short and atmospheric reminiscence by the flugel to the solos from the beginning of the piece, there comes a brief percussion interruption which leads to a reprise of the con brio, but this time in slightly different form. This all comes together in the finale where a big accelerando will lead to an exciting close.'
