£33.83King Lily of the Valley (Euphonium & Baritone Feature w/Brass Band) Espen Haukas
Based on a poem by Gustaf Froding, King Lily of the Valley is a poetic and regal musical tribute to the delicate flower that, in Froding's verse, appears as a young king surrounded by both sorrow and beauty. Originally composed by David Wikander and arranged for male choir (TTBB) by Rasmus Krigstrom, this evocative work has been masterfully reimagined for brass band by Norwegian arranger and composer Espen Wallacher Haukas and created for Bjorsvik Brass's performance at Siddis Brass 2025. The brass band version retains the choral character and emotional depth of the original, weaving lush harmonies and lyrical phrasing into a rich soundscape. A deeply expressive addition to any brass band repertoire - blending Nordic choral tradition with the grandeur and warmth of the brass band sound. £75.18Gothique Fantasy - On a theme by Boellmann (Brass Band) Andrew Wainwright
This magnificent work was commissioned by The Illinois Brass Band for the 2024 North American Brass Band Championships. Based on Leon Boellmann's epic organ work Suite Gothique, the 3rd movement of which is entitled Priere a Notre-Dame (A Prayer for Notre Dame), it pays tribute to the nearly 700-year-old Notre-Dame de Paris after the fire which did so much damage to this iconic building. Notre-Dame stands out for its three pipe organs (one historic) and its immense church bells, which are referenced at various times in Gothique Fantasy. Two of the other movements from Boellmann's work also provide inspiration for the piece, firstly the Introduction - Choral, and the famous Toccata, snippets of which appear at various times in the piece. Gothique Fantasy opens with the Choral, a solo offstage cornet sounding the opening statement. A quintet, stood to the side of the stage, takes up the Choral, while the rest of the band enters on held muted notes, creating a sustained effect evoking the harmonies spreading across the vast cathedral. Colossal organ-like sounds announce themselves as the full band takes on the theme. A lively Animato follows. Here there are continued references to the Choral, while the famous Toccata motif starts to appear. A Misterioso section ensues, which leads into a poignant Prayer for Notre Dame featuring a euphonium duet, where the music reflects upon the devasting fire and centuries of history and artefacts that were lost. A lone euphonium the sounds, representing the remaining remnants of the cathedral. A chaotic and rhythmic Presto, based on the Toccata, then follows and tests the technique of the band from top to bottom, whilst moving through various time signatures, the pulse lacking any sense of stability. A return to the Choral theme leads into a further reflective section, this time featuring the secondary theme from the Toccata with a flugel and solo horn duet. Next the music arrives at an aleatory section (Senza Misura), which depicts the remnants of the fire, followed by the grand cathedral emerging out of the ashes. Various motifs from earlier in the piece are heard across the band. At this point, various parts enter at different times on the conductor's signal, before building towards a 6/8 Presto. Here the music gathers momentum as it leads to a Grandioso finale featuring the Choral in all its glory. However, to conclude the work, the final strains of the Toccata sound, bringing the work to a glorious conclusion as Notre-Dame rises again! £33.83A Century of Art (Brass Band) Robbert Vos
A Century of Art was composed for Brass Band Kunst naar Kracht from the town of De Goorn (The Netherlands) for its 100th anniversary in 2022. A version for Fanfare Orchestra was commissioned by the Fanfare Project Orchestra in 2023. The title of the work refers to Brass Band Kunst naar Kracht's 100-year existence and the array of art that has been created in that time. A Century of is a flashy and virtuosic opening work where melodic lines are combined with other surprising compositional elements. You can hear, among some references to some famous brass band test pieces, a quote from Lohengrin by Richard Strauss. A transcription of Lohengrin was used at the 1922 British Open in England, one of the most famous brass band competitions in the world, the same year as Brass Band Kunst naar Kracht was founded. Title: Hymne A L'Amour Composers: Marguerite Monnot & Edith Piaf Arranger: Andrew Duncan Instrumentation: Brass Band Publisher: Musikverlag Frank Description An arrangement of the beautiful French song Hymne A L'Amour arranged for brass band by Andrew Duncan This arrangement was originally sung by Edith Piaf then Josh Groban and more recently by Celine Dion in a memorable performance on the Eiffel Tower at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The Cooperation Band conducted by Katrina Marzella played this arrangement at Brass in Concert 2025 as the finale of their winning performance and was an audience favourite. It has been much shared on social media and can also be streamed on World Of Brass Play. The arrangement for brass band can be played with and without a marimba. Sir Granville Bantock (1868 - 1946) composed the second of his five major brass band work for Callender's Cableworks Band, completing the commission on 30 November 1932. Based in the Thames-side district of Belvedere near Erith, the band was active between 1898 and 1961. The works band of the Callender Cable & Construction Co. Ltd, it was at the peak of its popularity during the 1930s and was a frequent broadcaster on the radio. The band employed an in-house arranger and played saxophones in its lighter material. King Lear was one of the band's major commissions and was not published in Bantock's lifetime. The manuscript score and parts were thought to be lost for decades, but were found in the library of the Haydock Band (Lancashire), which had inherited part of Callender's library of manuscripts material and bespoke arrangements after it has been transferred to nearby Prescott Cables Band after Callender's Cable Works closed.King Lear is a substantial work, in essence a dramatic tone poem in the romantic Tchaikovskian manner, presenting a series of character portraits of the foolish old king and his three daughters, Goneril, Regan and Cordelia. The music is dramatic and lyrical by turns, with the most generous lyrical episode revealing perhaps the warm-hearted Cordelia. An expansive melody that flows from this is brought back towards the end as the main climax of the work.In 2001, Bantock's score was recorded by the University of Salford Brass Band, conducted by Dr. Roy Newsome. The original is serviceable, but in comparison with the orchestral version he made in 1936 (part of which was recorded on a Paxton 78 rpm) and later brass band scores, performing editions of which were prepared by others, it lacks colour and range typical of Bantock's orchestral work. Above all it lacks percussion, which can be heard on the recorded extract. With the kind permission of the Bantock Estate, I have prepared a performing edition for publication that incorporates percussion, derived from the orchestral recording and added editorially in similar manner elsewhere. I have revoiced some of the low- lying instrumental parts to present the material in more comfortable ranges. Dynasty takes the form of a Symphonic Poem, a musical form first introduced to a contest audience at the Crystal Palace in 1913 by Percy Fletcher in his work Labour and Love.Using key passages from the autobiography of Harry Mortimer, On Brass, as the source for the narrative, the work opens with a four-note leitmotif (Harry's theme, "as if descending from the heavens"), and the timeline unfolds as follows:Harry - One's destiny decided at birth "I'll make him the best cornet player in England"War - Why do the nations so furiously rage together? Fred volunteers for military serviceTheatre - And suddenly "I dashed to the rescue like a hero in the silent movies I was about to get to know so well"Journey - Comfort Ye A new life and new challengesTogether - Come unto me "A golden age"Farewell - For behold, darkness "Fred's death surely marked the passing of an era"Amen - The Trumpet shall soundListeners familiar with brass band repertoire will recognise a few pertinent quotes within the piece.In my imagination Harry is joined by Fred on cornet and the euphoniums of Alex and Rex for the quartet cadenza from Sovereign Heritage by Jack Beaver in Together.The Amen section from Handel's Messiah provides the basis for a contrapuntal flight of fancy as the work moves towards a conclusion. Heroes of the North was commissioned by Henning Annundsen for Skodvin Skulemusikk and pays tribute to the development of brass band activity in the Nordhordland region of Norway.The music is a set of character variations based upon personalities long associated with both the band and the region. The opening 5 note motif (C D E F G) might be considered the starting point for beginner brass students, and this mini-theme is developed throughout the work.Five variations follow: Mr Brevik's Galop (representing Tom Brevik, a key figure in Norwegian brass band music); Frode's Dance (with apologies to Edvard Grieg), portraying soprano cornet player Frode Rydland, one of Skodvin Skulemusikk's most famous "old boys"; Mr Bjrge's Walk representing Viggo Bjrge, "Mr Eikanger Bjrsvik Band"; Hymn for Knut-Harald, known as "Mr Skodvin Skulemusikk" having over many years played a central role in the teaching and training of the band, and finally Maestro Snell's Russian Adventure features music with more than a hint of Russian (Khachaturian to be precise) and calls to mind Howard Snell whose arrangements and presence have made such a huge contribution to Norwegian Brass Banding over many years.Heroes of the North is playable by 4th section bands.Duration: 10.00
