Toccata Festiva was commissioned in 1994 by the Dutch Brass Band Championships. The wind band version was made a year later by the composer himself. Historically speaking, the toccata is considered to be one of the first independent instrumental forms for keyboard instruments. Originally the toccata was typically more or less improvised, later this musical form was given a more regulated structure. Both elements are used in the Toccata Festiva: on the one hand the different themes are developed freely, on the other, the piece has an orderly structure. It is in a three part form (quick-slow-quick) and includes both strong rhythmical figures and broad melodic lines. Part of the composition is written in a more or less archaic tone idiom, referring to the period from which the toccata form originates (16th century).Duration: 13:30

2014 Butlins First Section. Vitae Aeternum represents the first substantial composition conceived by Paul Lovatt-Cooper in his capacity as 'Composer in Residence' to the world famous Black Dyke Band.? Vitae Aeternum (meaning 'Eternal Life') takes its inspiration from songs composed by Ivor Bosanko and Dick Krommenhoek and is in three continuous movements. Vitae Aeternum was commissioned by Gerard Klaucke of GK Graphic Design VOF and received its first performance in the De Lawei Concert Hall, Drachten, Holland on 25th August 2007 played by Black Dyke Band conducted by Dr. Nicholas Childs. Later that year, it formed the finale of Brighouse and Rastrick Band's winning programme at the Brass in Concert Championship and has since been embraced by other leading bands including Cory Band, Leyland Band and The International Staff Band of The Salvation Army.

Benjamin Britten composed his Occasional Overture Op.38, for the opening of the BBC Third Programme on 29th September 1946, when it was performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Sir Adrian Boult. Given the dominance of brass and woodwind in this concise but exciting work, versions for brass band and wind band have been prepared for Britten's centenary year. Elgar's Pomp & Circumstance March No. 1?was completed in July 1901 although the 'big tune' actually dates from earlier in that same year. It was premiered in Liverpool by its dedicatees, the Liverpool Orchestral Society, on the 19th October. It was repeated in London a few days later by Henry Wood at the Promenade concerts and the result was sensational, the audience roared its applause, and refused to allow the concert to continue. In order to restore order, Wood conducted the march three times - the only time in the history of the Promenade concerts that an orchestral item was accorded a double encore in Wood's lifetime.
