Faure's Requiem stands as one of the most cherished choral works in the classical repertoire. Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on the dramatic aspects of death and judgment, Faure's Requiem is characterised by its serene and comforting nature. The Sanctus, a pivotal movement within this larger work, encapsulates a sense of peace and transcendence that resonates deeply with audiences. This brass band setting by Andrew Wainwright of the Sanctus remains faithful to the essence of Faure's original orchestration, although is scored down a tone from the original. £33.62Finale - Suite No.3 (Brass Band) Tchaikovsky arr. Ruben Schmidt
This arrangement by Ruben Schmidt is the exciting polonaise finale from the last movement of Tchaikovsky's thrilling Suite No.3 in G Major for Orchestra. This was first performed in Saint Petersburg on January 12th, 1885, at the fifth symphony concert of the Russian Musical Society, conducted by Hans von Bulow. The suite also was Tchaikovsky's first American success when it was performed by the New York Symphony Society at Carnegie Hall on May 7,1891. First intended as its own symphony, it became the most played and most successful of Tchaikovsky's four suites. The finale of the last movement is an invigorating polonaise dance to finish the suite. Tchaikovsky often enjoyed conducting this final movement as an independent work himself. With the heart is a fanfare full of energy and celebration. The title references a quote from the book The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery: "it is only with the heart that one can see rightly, what is essential is invisible to the eye". This aesthetic links the passion of music to the giving ethos of the Rotary organisation, whose District 9800 commissioned the work for their 2024 District Conference. With the Heart was premiered by the Victorian Youth State Brass Band directed by Phillipa Edwards in Bendigo in April 2024. £37.36Nicaea - Band Warm-up (Brass Band) John Bacchus Dykes arr. Steve Kellner
This warm-up is designed to help players and conductors hear and improve section, group, and full band intonation, rhythmic precision, and balance in an efficient and musically satisfying way. The tune Nicaea was selected because of its easy-to-hear triads and intervals, and the harmonisation used throughout is purposely simple and consistent, so that the players can become very familiar with potential intonation trouble spots. Likewise, discrepancies in precision and balance will easily be heard. Keys have been carefully selected to expose specific intonation problems within the sections and groups, like the overlap between Eb and Bb instruments in the horns/baritones and later in euphoniums/basses, and 5th position tuning in the trombones. The format in sections 2 through 5 is consistent, beginning with a single section of the band playing in unison, then expanding into two-part and four-part harmony. After eight bars that section is joined by another section or sections to form a common multi-section group used in brass band scoring, such as the 'mellow choir', 'low brass', 'tuba-euphonium choir', and 'bright choir'. Section 6 features the two largest groupings, the 'all but cornets' and 'high brass'. Section 7 brings the whole band together for a majestic and powerful finish. Ever since the first performance in April 1742 in Dublin, Ireland, Messiah has been the iconic Christian oratorio. It is a work of genius with lyrics skillfully taken from the Bible by Charles Jennens and timeless music by G. F. Handel, and has been at the top of the Western musical canon for close to 300 years. For unto us a child is born comes roughly halfway through Part One of the oratorio and is one of its most popular choruses, being the prophecy of the birth of a Messiah (Jesus) found in Isaiah chapter nine. £33.62'Mid all the traffic (Brass Band) Traditional arr. Andy Wareham
This stunning arrangement by British composer Andy Wareham is of the popular hymn 'Mid all the Traffic, which marries the North-American folksong Shenandoah set to lyrics by English journalist, novelist and poet William Arthur Dunkerley (written under the pseudonym of 'John Oxenham'). The hymn is very well-regarded in both the Salvation Army and wider brass band movement thanks to a popular arrangement by renowned Salvationist composer Leonard Ballantine. The arranger writes: 'This setting of 'Mid All The Traffic was originally composed during the Covid-19 pandemic as an octet arrangement for single instrument. My hope was to create an arrangement that offers an alternative view on harmony and could be multi-track recorded; allowing performers to give, and share, a performance whilst in isolation. The music was written in dedication to all of the 'key-workers' in the UK, especially in the NHS, who worked tirelessly throughout difficult conditions during the Covid-19 pandemic.' Felix Mendelssohn's stunning Choral Cantata has here been adapted to the brass band by Edward Mylechreest. A setting of Martin Luther's sacred words, this short piece is a staple of the choral canon and is widely regarded as a choral masterpiece. The hymn tune melody repeats three times throughout the piece (first from the trombones, then the horns, followed by a full band chorale), each time an emploring prayer and statement of the text. This arrangement can also be used for accompaniment to the original Chorale, remaining in the original Eb major key signature. Knowledge of the original piece will be of great benefit to the performer and conductor alike. £37.36Drink to me only (Flugel Solo with Brass Band) Trad. English Melody arr. Bowen
The title of this flugel horn solo derives from a 17th century English poem by Ben Johnson that begins 'Drink to me only with thine eyes, and I will pledge with mine'. Its familiar melody is attributed to Colonel R. Mellish (1777-1817). This solo setting was written for the New York Staff Band in 1991. Within The Salvation Army church, the melody is associated with a religious lyric by William Drake Pennick (1884-1944) that begins 'There is a holy hill of God, its heights by faith I see'. (The Song Book of The Salvation Army, No. 627). The New York Staff Band recorded the solo on its 1992 CD, Under Three Flags (Triumphonic TRCD 1050).
