Felix Mendelssohn's stunning Choral Cantata has here been adapted to the brass band by Edward Mylechreest. A setting of Martin Luther's sacred words, this short piece is a staple of the choral canon and is widely regarded as a choral masterpiece. The hymn tune melody repeats three times throughout the piece (first from the trombones, then the horns, followed by a full band chorale), each time an emploring prayer and statement of the text. This arrangement can also be used for accompaniment to the original Chorale, remaining in the original Eb major key signature. Knowledge of the original piece will be of great benefit to the performer and conductor alike. The composer writes: 'One of my all time favourite films is Clue (1985) based on the board game of the same name (Cluedo, if you're from the UK). Clue follows the night of six guests who are invited to a mansion for dinner. The host, Mr. Boddy is murdered, and the guests must work together to find the killer before any more lives are lost. I implore you to give it a watch if you haven't already, even if it's just for Tim Curry's magical performance as The Butler. Running at 82 minutes, the film is over before you know it. I wanted to create a similar story here with Whodunnit?, which like it's inspiration, Clue, moves at an incredible pace as it follows a dinner party, to which our guests have been invited. This work is rather dark throughout and full of intentional cliches, for which, I make no apology!' With the heart is a fanfare full of energy and celebration. The title references a quote from the book The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery: "it is only with the heart that one can see rightly, what is essential is invisible to the eye". This aesthetic links the passion of music to the giving ethos of the Rotary organisation, whose District 9800 commissioned the work for their 2024 District Conference. With the Heart was premiered by the Victorian Youth State Brass Band directed by Phillipa Edwards in Bendigo in April 2024. JOY THROUGH THE AGES (Brass Band Set) - Howard Evans
This work was written for the 125th anniversary of Boscombe Band, celebrated in November 2011, and is the title track of the band' album released in the same year. The music is celebratory in nature and is dedicated to all those who have served in the band during its 125 year history. The theme of the work is a song by Charles Hutchison Gabriel which was the favourite of the band's librarian, Gerald Whittingham, who was 'promoted to Glory' after a long battle with a brain tumour. The title comes from the last verse, 'When with the ransomed in Glory, his face I at last shall see, 'twill be my joy through the ages, to sing of his love for me'.

DELIBERATE (Brass Band Set) - Andrew Mackereth
So that there is no doubt about the correct pronunciation, the title of this festival (concert) march means 'to think about'! It was written in 2010 for the Belfast Temple Music School and recalls a particularly impressive open-air meeting from the previous year's school. The main theme heard is 'Onward, Christian soldiers' while there is also reference to 'A mighty fortress is our God'.

This march derives its title from the American hymn When the roll is called up yonder which is used as a bass solo. British expatriate William Broughton became a master of the American street march, the trio and break-up strain of this march being unmistakeably American and reminiscent of the golden age of American band music under Sousa, King and Fillmore.

TO REGIONS FAIR (Brass Band Set) - Norman Bearcroft
Clive Bright, in his score note when To Regions Fair was originally published in 1958, predicted that the march would 'have a good run'. In retrospect, this turned out to be something of an understatement as this march (and many other Bearcroft marches) remains vibrantly active fifty years after its original publication. The title is derived from the song 'Meet in bliss' which is featured in the trio section.

IMAGES OF PRAISE (Euphonium Solo with Brass Band Set) - Kenneth Downie
This solo was written for Derick Kane and consists of two sections. The first is built on an original, lyrical melody which is introduced immediately by the soloist while the second is more virtuosic in style and features a tune by the late Keith Prynn, 'I feel like singing all the time'. The solo is jaunty and light-hearted, with a fine sense of style, and not without a dash of humour.

LIFESTREAM (Brass Band Set) - Ralph Pearce
This march is modelled on the well-known American quick march called Midwest by J.J. Richards. The melody of the second subject is by the Danish hymn-writer, Sophie Hedvig Dedakam and is associated with words by Major Clara Vint who helped to establish En Evant, the French War Cry. The title of the march is derived from the text of the song.
