    Within Blue Empires - Paul Lovatt-Cooper

    Within Blue Empires was commissioned by Graham Taylor, a successful design consultant. Graham was whale watching off the coast of Canada when he became inspired and fell in love with the great mammals. The composition follows a programmatic brief, focusing on the sea, and in particular, the life of whales. The British Federation of Brass Band (BFBB) chose Within Blue Empires as the test-piece for the 2009 English National Brass Band Championships.

    “A young, talented and tender-hearted actress was passing along the street of a large city. Seeing a pale, sick girl lying upon a couch just within the half-open door of a beautiful dwelling, she entered, with the thought that by her vivacity and pleasant conversation she might cheer the young invalid. The sick girl was a devoted Christian, and her words, her patience, her submission and heaven-lit countenance so demonstrated the spirit of her religion that the actress was led to give some earnest thought to the claims of Christianity, and was thoroughly converted and became a true follower of Christ. She told her father, the leader of a theatre troupe, of her conversion and of her desire to abandon the stage, stating that she could not live a consistent Christian life and follow the life of an actress. Her father was astonished beyond measure and told his daughter that their living would be lost to them and their business ruined if she persisted in her resolution.Loving her father dearly, she was shaken somewhat in her purpose and partially consented to fill the published engagement to be met in a few days. She was the star of the troupe, and a general favourite. Every preparation was made for the play in which she was to appear. The evening came and the father rejoiced that he had won back his daughter and that their living was not to be lost. The hour arrived; a large audience had assembled. Frank Bridge - A Thematic Catalog charted the composer's intriguing creative journey from 1900, the year of his first surviving compositions were 61 in 1941. Much has changed with regard to Bridge research since 1983. His life and work has been the subject of many post-graduate research projects. All his major works have been recorded and are more widely performed. Bridge's music has been in the public domain since 2011. April 13, 2016, when the manuscript of Phantasie in F minor for string quartet (H.55) was discovered in the archive of theWorshipful Company of Musicians. After half a lifetime of writing about Bridge's life and work for journals, program previews and registration notes, I have a lot of writing and an extensive selection of correspondence by Bridge and his friends and some significant 'period' articles and images to create, I hope, a more complete picture of Frank Bridge inthe context of his time.     Mists on the River Wear - Dan Price

    Mists On The River Wear is a ‘song and dance' for solo tuba. It was commissioned in 2010 by the Black Dyke Band's solo Eb Bass player and international tuba star Joseph Cook.The SongThe work opens with unaccompanied tuba announcing a three note motif which is the basis for the entire work. The accompaniment enters in broken cluster chords which emulate the mist gliding on the river at early morning. The mist clears and the river motif appears on tenor horns whilst the tuba melody flows above.Geographically, the River Wear passes past Durham Cathedral and Durham Castle as it works its way through the city and to reflect this musically there is an element of a renaissance dance in the centre of this movement in an attempt to capture the historic and physically dominating presence of these buildings within the city.As the movement draws to a close there is a passage of light scoring which enables the soloist to demonstrate their ability at performing multi-phonics, a haunting sound which is eventually engulfed by the sound of the river broadening out as it travels on its journey.The DanceIn contrast to the lyrical first movement, this second movement showcases the versatility of the instrument and the agility of the soloist in a lively dance.The dance begins in compound time and echoes the style of an English jig which represents the energetic life you find in the university city of Durham. There is a deliberate quote written into the theme of the jig which comes from the 1st Movement of Ralph Vaughan-Williams' Concerto for Bass Tuba, which Joseph and the composer share a fondness towards.A brief return to the riverside opening material of the piece quickly leads us into a pseudo "Jazz" waltz, where cross rhythms between soloist and accompaniment gives the melody a sense of disjointedness and ambiguity. However, the music soon flows back into a reprise of the jig with a closing cadenza section that brings Mists On The River Wear to a close.

    For decades the Japanese people were plagued by a fearsome dragon, which would attack the villages and towns killing many people. The Emperor, fearing for his beautiful daughter's life, decreed that if anyone could defeat the dragon they could have his daughters hand in marriage.The music opens at the gates of the Emperors palace. Our hero, a young and brave soldier, returns with the army victorious. To reward his bravery, the soldier is summoned to the temple by the Emperor.On his way to the temple the young soldier meats the Emperors daughter, represented by the slow Soprano cornet. They fall in love and the young soldier accepts the challenge from the Emperor and embarks in his quest to rid the land of the dragon.The music continues at the foot of an erupting volcano, the soldier finds the dragon and they enter into battle. After a fearsome fight and summoning every last bit of his strength, the young soldier eventually manages to drive his sword into the dragon's heart.With the final closing chords of this piece representing the fatal blows from the victorious soldier's sword, the dragon collapses and our hero stands victorious.Tale of the Dragon is a descriptive piece that provides opportunities for soloists within the piece to stand at the front to perform. This high octane finale has plenty for all musicians and listeners to enjoy.

    The Irish Washerwoman - Irish Traditional

    The Irish jig is very fashionable within the traditions of Irish dance music and none more so than this particular favourite, The Irish Washerwoman. There are various forms of jig including the 'single jig', 'slip jig' and 'slide jig'. Written in 6/8 time, this skilful setting by Rodney Newton breathes new life into the popular tune and is a perfect example of the 'double jig'.The Irish Washerwoman can be heard on the CD Celtic Charm (DOYCD214) on which the performers are David Childs and Cory Band.
