£19.95Beyond the Falls - The Smoke That Thunders (Brass Band - Study Score)
David Livingstone was a renowned Scottish missionary and explorer whose legendary expeditions from 1841 until his death in 1873 took him deep into the interior of central and southern Africa. While his initial aim was to spread Christianity and commerce, his legacy became defined by his relentless spirit of discovery.This work captures the harrowing and ultimately triumphant journey that led to his discovery of Victoria Falls. Originally composed for the GUS Band's performance at the 2012 Brass in Concert Championships, the work was expanded in 2026 for the Black Dyke Band's recording, Gothique Fantasy - The Music of Andrew Wainwright.The music opens with an air of trepidation, reflecting the weight of the mission ahead. This tension soon gives way to a more optimistic section featuring the Scottish folk song A Man's a Man for a' That. Livingstone reportedly hummed this Rabbie Burns tune to bolster his spirits while travelling. The score then depicts the immense hardships of the expedition (letters F to L), illustrating skirmishes with suspicious local tribes, wild animal attacks, and bouts of African fever.Following these trials, a more reflective, emotive movement (Letters L to R) explores Livingstone's internal struggle and his doubts about continuing. This emotional core is built upon the hymn Lord, Send Me Anywhere, a melody composed by Livingstone himself. Emerging from this prayer with renewed purpose, the final section (Letter R to the end) follows his path along the Zambezi River. The music builds to a triumphant climax, capturing his elation at seeing the magnificent Victoria Falls - known locally as 'Mosi-oa-Tunya' (The Smoke that Thunders).Duration: 13.30

Festive Intrada - Bill Willis
FESTIVE INTRADAThis is a lively opener using the well know Christmas tunes of Silent Night and O Come, All Ye FaithfulAfter a bright opening, Silent Night comes in at letter B from Solo Cornets and Soprano followed by the Horns and back to the Cornets. This leads into a brief reference to O Come, All Ye Faithful from the Trombones before the full tune appears at letter C. Care with the syncopated rhythms to ensure the momentum is maintained. As the piece concludes, Silent Night returns, with a bar of Deck the Halls thrown in for good measure leading to a bright ending.

This arrangement for Brass Ensemble combines elements of "Carol of the Bells" with "Silent Night" in a smooth jazz feel. It begins with a flugelhorn solo in letter A. Stealing Apples is an old swing-tune written by Fats Waller. Performances by Benny Goodman and his big band made the song very popular. In this arrangement for brass band, the mallet percussion is very essential. Mallet Percussion presents the melody from letter A and is also featured as soli-instruments from letter L to P. These parts can alternatively be played as vibraphone solo. Please be aware of the balance at letter A. Horn and Trombones must play piano but well articulated. Letter D must sound sparkling and fresh with articulated and powerful trombones and cornets (using straight-mute). Make shue that the 8th-notes are not played too dotted two bars before letterG. Almost even 8th-notes accentuated on the start of the slur is a good tip. Watch the balance at letter H. This part have to sound homogeniously. The soloistic Soprano Cornet at letter Q must be played in the style of Benny Goodan. The accompaniment must not be too powerful from letter R to S. Best of luck with the performance!

"Kanskje kommer Kongen" ("Perhaps the King is Coming") is yet another example of Knutsen and Ludvigsen's creativity and imagination.The arrangement begins with a short fanfare in the introduction. From letter B, the melody is carried by horn and trombone with a majestic character.Ensure good precision in the accompaniment. From letter C, the style is Latin-inspired, resembling Samba. Alternative percussion solutions are possible here.From letter D, there is a pizzicato effect in 8th-notes, with sonorous melodic lines. The style becomes majestic and elevated again from letter E,then returns to the Latin style from letter F until the end.Reid Gilje

The Samba is a Latin American dance, which is mostly associated with parties, as a result of the fast tempo in which it is usually played. 'Sumba Samba' forms an exception to this rule. In order to get this samba to swing it is important to stick to the tempo prescribed. 'Sumba Samba' starts with a motif which will play an important role throughout the piece. This motif can be heard in the first notes of the 'refrain' and, as said before, has been used in the introduction, as well as in the transition after the middle part (letter G). Furthermore, it plays an important role in the middle part itself (letter E), in which the samba has momentarily disappeared and acompletely different atmosphere has been created. At letter H we pick up where we left off with the samba and swing to the end of this composition.
