Among the solos contained in this album are some of the 'heart songs' of The Salvation Army, some traditional melodies as well as four larger works. There are solos to challenge the younger player as well as some to test the most advanced soloist.These solos, many of which were only available with brass and accompaniment, have now been arranged with pianoforte accompaniment and come complete with an 'accompaniment CD'. Richard Phillips is the pianist. There is music suitable for all occasions, ranging from the Sunday morning worship meeting to the concert platform. Most importantly, the album contains solos that will appeal to the listener as well as the performer. BEFORE THE CROSS (Cornet Solo with Brass Band Set) - Edward Gregson
Written at the request of David Daws for his solo album The Sound of David Daws, this meditation for cornet and brass band uses the composer's own song Before the cross (originally published in The Musical Salvationist, April 1965), the first lines of which are Before the cross I stand in fear and wonder, and see that all my sirs on Thee are laid. The song was written at an early stage of the composer's career, just before commencing study at The Royal Academy of Music, London. After a brief introduction the melody is heard twice, first played by the soloist, then on Euphonium and Flugel Horn with the soloist adding ornate counterpoint before taking up the melody once again, this time leading to a quiet and reflective conclusion.

Orpheus is known as the most talented music player of the ancient times. It is said that god Apollo was his father, from whom took his extreme talent in music, and the Muse Calliope was his mother. Tragedy struck when his wife, Eurydice stepped on a viper which in turn bit her, injecting its fatal venom. Nothing could stop his cries of anguish and sheer pain and sorrow upon realizing his beautiful Eurydice was dead. Orpheus decided to go into the Underworld to get his wife back. Apollo, his father, would talk to Hades, the god of the Underworld to accept him and hear his plea. And so Orpheus set off into the Underworld and was warned that for no reason must he look back while his wife was still in the dark, for that would undo everything he hoped for. As Orpheus was reaching the exit of the Underworld, he could hear the footfalls of his wife approaching him. As his was approaching the exit, his heart was beating faster and faster. The moment he stepped on the world of the living, he turned his head to hug his wife. Unfortunately, he got only a glimpse of Eurydice before she was once again drawn back into the underworld. When Orpheus turned his head, Eurydice was still in the dark, she hadn't seen the sun and, was drowned back to the dark world of the dead. Waves of anguish and despair swept over him and shuddering with grief he approached the Underworld again but this time, he was denied entry, the gates were standing shut and god Hermes, sent by Zeus, wouldn't let him in. His songs were no more joyful but extremely sad. His only comfort was to lay on a huge rock and feel the caress of the breeze, his only vision were the open skies. Song of the Night Sky was recorded by Tom Hutchinson and the Cory Band in June 2015, featuring on his debut solo album.Duration: 4.15

This stunning arrangement of O Holy Night, showcases the lyrical and expressive potential of the Flugel Horn or Trumpet, arranged by acclaimed jazz composer Tom Kubis and transcribed by Dave Collins. Originally made famous by the legendary Wayne Bergeron with the Tom Kubis Big Band, this arrangement has since become a favourite among brass soloists worldwide. It received its concert premiere with the North York Temple Band (Canada) under Bandmaster Glenn Barlow, featuring the virtuosic talents of Marcus and Harrington Venables. The piece was later recorded by the International Staff Band, conducted by Dr. Stephen Cobb, on their 2016 album Celebrate the Season. The featured soloist on that recording was the world-renowned Philip Cobb. This arrangement offers flexible performance options - it can be presented as a solo feature or as a duet for Flugel Horn and Soprano Cornet (cued into the parts), making it ideal for both concert settings and festive performances. Inchcolm is an island in the Forth estuary first visited by St Columba in 567 and mentioned in Shakespeare's Macbeth. The ruins of Columba's abbey are regularly shrouded in mist and bring with it a flavour of mystery and legend. Composer and distinguished French horn player Terry Johns (Drac to his friends) was commissioned to write this work for Superbrass and their water influenced 2nd album, Brass Taps. Drac requested that he be allowed to write a solo feature with a proper tune for horn. Kingdom Brass in Scotland premiered Inchcolm in its new brass band form and the solo part is playable by either a tenor or french horn player. Duration: 5.00. Jan Eggum released "Myrsnipa" on the album "Hjerteknuser", which was released in 2007. The text is a variant of the folk tale with the moral "everyone likes their own children best and has for many years been one of Eggum's regular encores at concerts.The arrangement is attempted to stay true to Eggum's version and has retained its somewhat delicate character in order to support the text as much as possible. Although the arrangement is written for vocal soloist, it also works great with a solo instrument instead, and you can also choose whether you want a guitar or not, to keep it even more true to the original recording.The arrangement requires good balance and intonation, but will be a nice part of the concert repertoire the audience is guaranteed to recognize.
