A flashback is an interesting psychological phenomenon: a seemingly random trigger can bring back long-forgotten memories from the subconscious mind. The composer underwent a similar experience before writing this piece. He was asked to write a piece for The National Youth Fanfare Band in the Netherlands, one which he heard perform many years ago. All of a sudden he remembered Deep Harmony, a piece frequently programmed back then. He used his own flashback-experience as an inspiration to weave an old English hymn into his new composition, much like a musical flashback. The right idea at the right moment, as this piece will prove!

In 1911 the Russian impresario Diaghilev commisioned Paul Dukas to compose music for the famous ballet fairy-tale 'La Perie'by Jean Coralli.Fokine was to make a new choreography, so that the Russian ballet company 'Ballet Russes' would be able to perform the piece in Paris that same year. Due to a quarrel between Diaghilev and Dukas about who should dance the title-part, however, the ballet was not performed by the 'Ballet Russes'but by another company in 1912.The ballet 'La Perie' is Dukas' last symphonic work. In 1911 gaf de Russische impresario Diaghilev Paul Dukas opdracht om muziek te componeren voor het beroemde ballet sprookje 'La Perie' van Jean Coralli. Fokine was gevraagd om een nieuwe choreografie te maken, zodat het Russische balletgezelschap 'Ballet Russes' in staat zou zijn om het stuk in Parijs op te voeren in datzelfde jaar. Door een ruzie tussen Diaghilev en Dukas over de vraag wie de hoofdrol mocht dansen, werd het ballet in 1912 echter niet uitgevoerd door het 'Ballet Russes' maar door een ander gezelschap. Het ballet 'La Perie' is het laatste symfonische werk van Dukas.

The composer, who lives and works at the edge of the Forth estuary in Edinburgh has been inspired here by the intriguing "tap" dance that the gulls perform on the grass at certain times to encourage worms to break the surface. The middle movements describe the birds' "dancing" in flight, with a waltz and a slow soaring melody. The piece was written for the COOP Glasgow Brass Band on the occasion of their winning the Scottish brass band championship in 2009 and was broadcast on BBC Scotland's "Classics Unwrapped" in November of that year. Red Vest Man was composed as a dedication to cornet player Buddy Bolden, one of the first jazz musicians. He was reputed to always perform wearing a red vest. The piece is a New Orleans funeral march, something Bolden would have been called to do many times in his career. It starts with a slow mournful march, featuring solos from trumpet and trombone and finishes with a joyful 2nd line New Orleans rhythm. Duration: 8.00. Suitable for 2nd Section Bands and above.

Alloy was originally commissioned in 2009 by Redbridge Music Service as a performance goal for beginner brass instrumentalists who had received free tuition in schools across the borough. The aim of the piece was to provide an inspirational opportunity for beginner players to perform alongside intermediate and advanced level instrumentalists. Alloy is an 8-minute work for metallic instruments, which is reflected in its title. It is a fusion piece with elements from traditional Indian Raga, Drum & Bass grooves, Jazz, Rock and African rhythms alongside the more 'classical' melodic brass styles. What culminates is a vibrant and exciting contemporary work. Also included are 4 optional easy beginner brass parts in all keys. Duration: 8.00. Suitable for 1st Section Bands and above.

"I was asked by Music for Youth to write a flexibly scored fanfare for the School Proms at the Royal Albert Hall and the National Festival in Birmingham in 2013. At its first performance, over 200 young brass players performed "Flanfayre" in Birmingham Town Hall, directed by Roger Argente, members of Superbrass and myself. The score is a progressive romp through some increasingly dance-like grooves, borrowing some of its swing from South America, from marches and big band, moving from a really quite straight opening to a "let-go" moment at the end. It is more like a flan full of different flavours, than a fanfare, hence the title. I set myself a challenge to write 100 bars but ended up with 102, which, after the introduction, can be broken down into 10 easily discernible sections each with their own mini-musical narrative. Feel free to teach the audience the clapping groove and perform only under the strict instruction that you have fun !" - Stephen Deazley. Duration: 4.00. Suitable for 2nd Section Bands and above.

A Medley of Popular Songs, 1914 - 1918Music of the Great War is a five year project to use music of the period to educate and engage schools, colleges, town bands, and the wider public across the UK and the world to learn in a positive way about the events, the experience of the troops involved from all sides, and how music played its part.This year, to commemorate the centenary of the Great War a specially arranged medley Songs of the Great War has been created. The medley has been arranged for bands to rehearse and eventually perform on the 11 November 2015. It brings together some of the most popular tunes played, sung and performed by the men and women of the time - in the trenches and on the various home fronts.With the support of many countries and organisations, on the 11 November the medley will be first played in New Zealand and Australia. It will ripple east across the world being performed in countries like India and Pakistan before hitting Europe and onwards to include performances in Canada and the Caribbean. Bert Appermont dug deep into Celtic music for inspiration and created a fantasy that shows off the incredible, but often overlooked, versatility of the euphonium. Charming lyrical melodies, virtuosic runs and exciting, colourful tuttis create plenty of contrast in this exciting work. Soloist, composer and teacher Gardell Simons (1878 - 1945) achieved national prominence as trombone soloist with the Sousa Band. He later successfully made the transition to the orchestral world and became principal trombone in the Cleveland Orchestra as well as being professor of trombone at the Curtis Institute Of Music in Philadelphia.This solo dates from 1915 and describes the soft, gentle breezes of Summer. Maybe the atmosphere surrounding the many outdoor concerts in which the composer performed were his inspiration. This brass band arrangement was prepared at the request of Brett Baker for his visit to perform with Brass Band Of The Western Reserve, musical director Dr Keith M Wilkinson, in May 2010.

In 2008 the trombonist, Chris Jeans, was invited to be a featured soloist at a British Trombone Society event. He contacted Stan Kitchen at Studio Music Company to see if he had any new material for trombone. Stan then got in touch with me, as I had already written a piece for another trombone player, Brett Baker. This piece, Shout! was programmed for the same event so we needed to find something new for Chris.The title 'Blue Jeans' came to my mind, thus linking a blues-style piece with the obvious reference to Chris's surname. I spoke to Chris and he liked the sound of it so then I had to go away and write a solo to match the title!I managed to get a version with piano accompaniment done in time for Chris to perform at the trombone event and have now had a chance to complete the band version.Chris is a great chap, a good friend and a wonderful trombone player so I hope people enjoy listening to this solo that bears his name.- Rob WiffinDuration: 3.30
