A transcription for brass band of Mack Wilberg's popular setting of the much loved carol In the Bleak Midwinter, as sung by The King's Singers and The Choir of King's College, Cambridge at Carols from Kings in 2020. This is a reflective and beautiful arrangement of the classic Gustav Holst Christmas carol and remains faithful to the Wilberg choral setting. The arrangement underpins the well-loved melody with luscious, romantic harmonies, including moments of exquisite chromaticism. Legacy of Light was commissioned by the family of Howard Bland, Honorary Secretary of Wessex Band Summer School for many years. Rather than a work in a reflective style, the brief was to provide a work which celebrated his life - energy and music which would be fun to perform and listen to. The bubbling compound time signature combined with the cornet and tuned percussion ostinato to open provide immediate impact with the work's subsequent soaring melodies and joyous style a fitting tribute. The work received its world premiere by the joint forces of the brass and wind bands at the 2024 Wessex Band Summer School, conducted by Michael Fowles.

The relationship between Achilles and Patroclus is a key element of the myths associated with the Trojan war.. Its exact nature has been a subject of dispute in both the classical period and modern times. In the lliad, the two heroes have a deep and meaningful friendship. Achilles is tender towards Patroclus, while he is callous and arrogant towards others. Of Wind & Weeping (2015) is a flugel solo, with the soloist representing Greek warrior Achilles and the pain he faces following the death of Patroclus. For a brief moment, Achilles' character shifts from a strong and unbreakable warrior to an emotional and vulnerable character. The solo should be played with expression and feeling, a character who is mourning a loved one with mixed feelings of sadness, shock and vengeance. The work was written in early 2015 for flugel soloist David James and Tongwynlais Temperance Band, with whom he is a member.

From the Sea is a three-part work with the theme of land reclamation. The first part (The New Land) expresses the feelings of expectation and tension that come with the brand-new land. The second part (The Old Sea) is a nostalgic look back at the (old) sea. A sea that was sometimes turbulent, but also a source of life. The third part (The Future Land) captures the joy of living on the new land up to the present day. The work was commissioned by the joint music associations of the Noordoostpolder.

DURATION: 4'00". DIFFICULTY: 4th+. 'By Water and the Word' was composed for 2020 Brass Band Summer School in memory of it's long-standing course administrator Philip Biggs, who passed away in 2019. Aside from his work with BBSS, Philip was also the renowned administrator for the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain where my first opportunities as a writer of brass music were presented. It's a certainty to say that without Philip's work at the head of this organisation, there's zero chance I would be able to do what I do today as a musician, and for that it was a huge honour to write this short work in his memory. Under Maestro Bramwell Tovey, each course would conclude with an encore of The Day Thou Gavest (St. Clements) and one of the most used hymn tunes throughout the week was The Church's One Foundation (Aurelia). Since then, these two tunes have become synonymous with the NYBBGB and in turn Philip's life & work, so I felt it fitting to combine these two wonderful sacred melodies into a new work paying homage to those memories. .

The Fall of Icarus was composed for the Lions Youth Brass Band as the finale to their runers-up set at the 2018 National Youth Brass Band Championships of Great Britain. The music is inspired by the steady rise towards the sun of the Greek mythological character Icarus, as his impending fate becomes closer and closer. This work was designed as a more widely accesible alternative to the much loved March from the Pines of Rome by Respighi.

DURATION: 3'00". DIFFICULTY: 3rd+. 'The Royal Green Jackets' is a march composed for BD1 Brass as part of a set of music inspired by the British astronaut Tim Peake. . Following his graduation from the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst in 1992, Peake became a member of the Royal Green Jackets - a former infantry regiment of the British Army, later to become The Rifles - serving as a Platoon Commander before commencing his flight training. 2 years later in 1994, Peake received his Army Flying Wings and spent 15 years serving in military operations in the likes of Yugoslavia and Afganistan. . In 2009, Peake was selected as a European Space Agency astronaut and completed his basic training in November 2010.
