The arranger had a dream..... The three wise men were looking for the baby Jesus to give him their gifts. This was done somewhat in the manner of the scene of Monty Python's 'Life of Brian'. The search was not successful - Sir Alan Sugar ('The 'Apprentice') made an appearance ordering the three wise men to "get off my land". Meanwhile, the baby Jesus slept peacefully on, unaware of the nearby disturbance. Bizarrely, this dream sequence was played out at high speed, as in the closing scene from each episode of 'The Benny Hill Show' of the 1970s. This arrangement attempts to portray this comical caper. Choose Freedom is largely derived from the composers' own setting of Richard Slater's words, 'Yes, there flows a wondrous river' for SATB choir which was published in The Salvation Army's Choral Festival Series under the title 'The mighty river'.After many allusions to the song, it is eventually stated in full in the trio section. Downie's effective use of varying harmonic colours, unusual instrumental voicings and modal harmonies stand out in this rhythmically diverse march. There are quite a few loud passages in the march so conductors should savour the quieter ones!

At the time of writing, the composer remarked; 'The euphonium is often associated with melodies and harmonies that lend themselves to pleasing sounds'. That is true of this solo but it also presents considerable technical challenges for the soloist in terms of range and technique.

Mah Na, Mah Na (Brass Band - Score and Parts)
This catchy piece became a massive hit in the 1970s, when Jim Henson used the catchy melody in his children's TV series The Muppet Show and Sesame Street. Stefan Schwalgin has produced this excellent version to give bass trombone players, who sometimes feel left out by the band's repertoire, a platform for their soloistic development. In writing this piece the composer set out to emulate the sound of the Stan Kenton big band and music of that 'golden' era. The piece itself is based around two Salvation Army tunes that are associated with the word, 'salvation'; Steadily forward march! (T.B. 799) and Hark, hark, my soul (T.B.542). The music is intentionally flamboyant and requires a secure grasp of the style and rhythm to be successful. It was featured at the Belfast Temple Music School to great effect.
