For anyone who is familiar with this bizarre and wonderful city, this piece needs no explanation. New York is the third movement of East Coast Pictures, originally written for wind band, commissioned in 1985 by the British Youth Wind Orchestra with funds from National Westminster Bank plc. These three short 'pictures' were inspired by several visits by the composer to a small part of the USA's East Coast, an area that provides great extremes in the geography and the people. Cesar Franck was appointed as organist at the newly built Paris church of Saint Clotilde in 1858, though he wrote remarkably little music for the instrument. Piece Heroique was one of the Trois Pieces pour Grand Orgue written in 1878 for the inauguration of the new Cavaille-Coll organ at the Trocadero in Paris. It's stately grandeur and stirring finale make an ideal concert item, and this skillful arrangement (which includes an optional organ part for added colour) retains the character of the original, while transferring it to the sonority of the brass band. It is a tradition at Marlow High School, Oklahoma, that the band members' parents host a Band Banquet every May, at which the senior members of the band present a gift to the band director as a token of gratitude for his year's work. In 2009, clarinet player Brenna Hensley had the idea to commission a new piece from composer Philip Sparke to present to band director Billy Daniel, which would be played at the Spring Concert later that month. Salute to a Hero was the result.The piece opens with a decorated fanfare played on cornets and trombones and, after a short bridge passage, this reappears, played by the full band. A central lyrical section brings a mood of calm, utilisingdifferent brass colours, before the fanfare returns to close the work.

In 2007 Philip Sparke was appointed composer-in-residence to Monmouth School, situated on the Welsh/English border. The school, which has a venerable history dating back to 1614, has a thriving music department which boasts two concert bands, in co-operation with the nearby Haberdashers' Monmouth School for Girls, and a brass band.This exciting and innovative appointment involved three visits by the composer during the year as well as the commissioning of a new piece for each of the bands, all of which were premiered in a concert at the end of the year.Almshouse Street Blues was written for the brass band, whose members were allowed to vote for which type of piece they would get! Monmouth School is based in Almshouse Street and the town has a thriving summer festival which, alongside blues bands, features a wide variety of music including jazz, soul, rock and bangra.Duration: 4.45

Aldebaran - Maurice Forslund - Maurice Forslund
We are pleased to offer this new piece from our colleague, Maurice Forslund, in Sweden. "Aldebaran" is a traditional-style brass band march, named after one of the brightest and largest stars in the Northern sky. (The star is a red giant over 40 times the size of our Sun). The music starts off in a sombre minor key that turns progressively brighter step by step. This sequence is arrested by a brief section featuring a setting of the hymn tune 'Bangor' which dramatically puts the march firmly back into the minor key before setting it up for progression to the finale. This piece is graded in the range 'easy' to 'intermediate' and is well within the capabilities of most bands.

Louis James Alfred Lefebure-Wely is historically associated with the development of French organ music, as well as with organ technique. As a composer he was instrumental in the evolution of the French symphonic organ style and his works include many pieces for church use, and lighter fare like marches and sorties.It is probably in the latter genre that Lefebure-Wely scored his most enduring successes on the organ, with pieces like the sorties in B flat and E flat.Sue Hopkins has artfully captured the magic of Lefebure-Wely's writing and produced this great new piece which offers a perfect complement to your concert programme.
