£34.95Sprites and Flares (Brass Band - Score and Parts)
Sprites and Flares (2015), refers to the uncertain activities of sprites (upper atmospheric lightening) and solar flares (solar activity from the sun which cannot penetrate the earth's atmosphere) and uses these two ideas as a basis for the kind of musical material heard within the work - dramatic, swirling motifs, often of a virtuosic nature.The work's dramatic opening ensures the first thirty seconds are high in energy and full of impact. Following this, the music dies down and presents an ethereal atmospheric section, perhaps reflecting the calm before the storm. Before long, the music takes a turn for dramatic, fast, virtuosic playing, all reflecting the theme of the work, and indeed remains in this style through to the close, gaining momentum and becoming ever- more triumphant as the work reaches its close. A huge ending is heard, full of excitement and drama, but more importantly grandeur and rich harmonic-chords.The work was commissioned by and written for Leyland Band and its conductor, Thomas Wyss, as the finale to its 2015 Brass in Concert programme, premiered at The Sage, Gateshead, on 15th November 2015.

£37.77Polonaise from 'Scenes de Ballet' (Brass Band) Glazunov arr. Rob Bushnell
Alexander Glazunov was a Russian composer who was a gifted musician from childhood. He was seen as the natural heir to the nationalist revolution that had started with the Mighty Handful. Despite quickly turning from this to absolute forms of music, taking a keen interest in ballet music, his compositions still alludes to Russian folk tunes. He wrote four dance compositions, of which Scenes de Ballet was the first in 1894. The suite Scenes de Ballet, opus 52 has eight movements and was dedicated to the orchestra of the Russian Opera, St Petersburg. First performed in 1895 at a concert of the Imperial Music Society with Glazunov conducting. This arrangement of the final movement is for the British-style brass band, with alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. Written in 1851, the Albion Polka was written by Johann Strauss II (or Strauss Junior) and dedicated to Count Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, husband of Queen Victoria of Great Britain. The work takes its title from the old Roman name for Britain. It is not an unfamiliar addition to the Vienna New Year's Concerts. £33.99Love Divine (Blaenwern) (Brass Band) William Rowlands arr. Kenneth Downie
This delightful setting for brass band by Kenneth Downie is based on the much loved hymn Love Divine, All Loves Excelling, alternatively known as Blaenwern. An optional organ part which will enhance the last verse is included. Kenneth Downie writes: 'It has been a delight to work on this wonderful Welsh hymn tune called Blaenwern, a tune which perfectly suits the majestic words by Charles Wesley, 'Love divine, all loves excelling'. This hymn is all about a big, expansive, all-embracing God, and I have tried to capture this aspect of the words. The rising interval in the introduction is an important feature in developing the notion of a 'big God', and its reappearance near the end is intended to be very significant. The hymn is full of memorable phrases which will hopefully inspire players, singers and conductors as they contemplate the text in preparation for any performance. 'Joy of Heaven, to earth come down', 'Enter every longing heart', 'Finish then thy new creation', and then the last amazing four lines: 'Changed from glory into glory, Till in Heaven we take our place, Till we cast our crowns before thee, Lost in wonder, love and praise'. The addition of the organ in the last verse, by special request of Peggy and Scott Thomas who commissioned the arrangement, should add to the majesty of the music, but of course, it is not fundamental to any performance. May this music bring honour to our amazing God!' This engaging major Christmas work features three carols or songs associated with the place of Christ's birth: Once In Royal David's City, O Little Town of Bethlehem (Forest Green) and How Far Is It To Bethlehem? During Old Testament times, the city of Jerusalem had been considered the 'City of David', as the political and spiritual capital of Israel. However, after Christ's birth, that name was given to the town of Bethlehem - a quiet farming village in the countryside. This new designation is first mentioned in the Gospel of Luke: ''For unto you is born this day in the City of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.' (Luke 2:11) A variety of moods are used to express:- The crowds of people arriving in Bethlehem to be taxed, overtaking the town, leaving no room for a young, pregnant Mary and her husband.- The stillness of the countryside on the eve of Christ's birth.- The excitement of worshippers celebrating the birth of a Saviour. With its repetitive and foundational bass line and the lyrical imitative themes that follow, this music has proven to be especially well suited as a wedding processional, with the flexibility to reduce or lengthen the music as needed for the occasion.
