In this beautiful composition, melodic fragments of the hymn tune Beecher are morphed into a series of variations, showing the melody in various moods from expressive, then quiet and soft, to bright and triumphant in the end. Written as a test piece in the 4th division for the Dutch Brass Band Championships in 2015, the music features challenging solo parts for cornet, soprano cornet, flugelhorn and euphonium. Composer and Internationally reknown jazz trumpeter Steve Waterman writes... "When Roger Argente approached me to write a composition for his Spanish flavoured brass project he made the suggestion that a Tango, although more Argentinian than Spanish, would fit in well with the overall concept. I have always been a very big fan of the music of Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla and particularly the way that the Tango could be combined with jazz. A favourite recording of mine is of Piazzolla himself performing (on the bandoneon) with the jazz saxophonist Gerry Mulligan. As the composing progressed, a fugato also emerged hence the title Fugatango." Originally "Fugatango" featured a french horn improvised introduction section. This new brass band version allows the flugelhorn to enjoy the moment with a wonderful 8 bar solo section, now notated. Later in the work the solo trombone is given a solo section. Duration: 5.30. David Livingstone was a renowned Scottish missionary and explorer whose legendary expeditions from 1841 until his death in 1873 took him deep into the interior of central and southern Africa. While his initial aim was to spread Christianity and commerce, his legacy became defined by his relentless spirit of discovery.This work captures the harrowing and ultimately triumphant journey that led to his discovery of Victoria Falls. Originally composed for the GUS Band's performance at the 2012 Brass in Concert Championships, the work was expanded in 2026 for the Black Dyke Band's recording, Gothique Fantasy - The Music of Andrew Wainwright.The music opens with an air of trepidation, reflecting the weight of the mission ahead. This tension soon gives way to a more optimistic section featuring the Scottish folk song A Man's a Man for a' That. Livingstone reportedly hummed this Rabbie Burns tune to bolster his spirits while travelling. The score then depicts the immense hardships of the expedition (letters F to L), illustrating skirmishes with suspicious local tribes, wild animal attacks, and bouts of African fever.Following these trials, a more reflective, emotive movement (Letters L to R) explores Livingstone's internal struggle and his doubts about continuing. This emotional core is built upon the hymn Lord, Send Me Anywhere, a melody composed by Livingstone himself. Emerging from this prayer with renewed purpose, the final section (Letter R to the end) follows his path along the Zambezi River. The music builds to a triumphant climax, capturing his elation at seeing the magnificent Victoria Falls - known locally as 'Mosi-oa-Tunya' (The Smoke that Thunders).Duration: 13.30

£59.99Marcho Brioso (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip
Marcho Brioso was commissioned by The Brioso Brass, a British-style brass band from Hokkaido, Japan. They gave the first performance in January 2012.The commission was for a bright and breezy march that the band could use as their theme tune, so Marcho Brioso falls into the composer's series of Broadway-style marches, which includes Slipstream, The Bandwagon and Jubiloso. After a short introduction a solo cornet plays the main theme, accompanied by a euphonium counter-melody. A secondary phrase from the horns and baritones leads to a tutti version of the main theme which is followed by the traditional 'bass' strain. A change of key heralds the trio section, which features a cantabile melody on euphonium; this is then taken up by the full band after a short bridge passage and further change of key. This takes us back to the home key which sees a quiet staccato version of the main theme lead to a recapitulation and a short coda which brings the march to a close.Duration: 3:45

This three movement suite for brass band was commissioned by the Solothurnischer Blasmusikverband (SOBV) in Switzerland for their 2009 Festival. The first movement, Energy, is appropriately lively in character. It is dominated by an agitated theme on trombones and cornets, driven by a percussion accompaniment, and complemented by pulsating counterpoint from the rest of the band. The second movement is called Repose and its opening melodious theme on cornets provides a welcome respite from the restlessness and verve of the opening movement. The lyrical nature of the music is sustained throughout. The finale, Suspense, opens with a theme containing more than a hint of foreboding which recurs several times. There are numerous abrupt changes of dynamics, and also a brightening of mood, before everything finishes in a blaze of sound.

This energetic music was originally the second movement of 'Concerto for Brass Band' and was commissioned by Brass Band Treize Etoiles from Switzerland. It provides the opportunity for a glittering bravura moment in a concert, or can be performed as an additional movement to 'Concertino for Brass Band', placed before the slow movement and thereby re-creating the original 'Concerto'.
