Inspired by the infamous investigation into Jack the Ripper, Abberline follows Detective Inspector Frederick Abberline through the mist-shrouded streets of Victorian London in his desperate pursuit of a killer who remains forever just out of reach. Scored for brass band and solo euphonium, the piece blends atmospheric textures, shifting musical identities, and virtuosic demands to capture a narrative that is as haunting as it is unresolved. The piece opens in a world of shadows - the foggy alleys of Whitechapel - where tension simmers beneath the surface. The euphonium enters cautiously, as if stalking unseen figures, echoing the danger and uncertainty that cloaked the city in fear. This eerie calm is broken suddenly: the Ripper strikes. The moment is brief but brutal, leaving only silence and horror in its wake. From here, the music shifts into an uneasy, angular waltz: the figure of Abberline takes center stage, portrayed by the soloist as he investigates the aftermath. The waltz is melodically off-kilter and harmonically unstable, capturing both the grotesque nature of the crime and the detective's mental burden. The scene then returns to the streets - but this time, the musical material is more intricate, fragmented, and tense. The threat has deepened, and again the silence is shattered by violence. A second, slightly altered waltz follows, further reflecting Abberline's obsessive descent into the case. In the final section, the chase begins in earnest. Themes from earlier return in quick succession, intensified and overlapping as time runs out. The ancient Dies Irae chant is woven into the texture, evoking fate and judgment. In a final, erratic surge, the euphonium and band race toward an ending that is breathless and unresolved - a reflection of history's unanswered questions and the ghost that always stayed one step ahead. The Puffing Devil (2013) was commissioned by Camborne Trevithick Day Committee on the occasion of Camborne's 30th Trevithick Day celebration. The premiere performance of the work, written for brass band and children's choir, saw a massed performance by six brass bands and children from nine local schools. With the intention of being an educational work as well as a musical work, The Puffing Devil reflects the story of Richard Trevithick both in the lyrics and the musical material.A mysterious opening sees running semiquavers in the euphoniums as the flugel horn introduces the work with a solo, before the entry of the horns playing rhythmic quavers. The addition of the voices at the outset is for effect - working with the instruments to create the sound of a steam engine gathering pace simply to the words 'Trevithick'. Once a steady tempo is reached, themes are introduced and sung by the choir, where the vocal writing is a very simple singular-melody; easy for any primary school aged children to learn. An ending of grandeur in a majestic nature is presented, to create a big finish to a feel-good educational work.

Jekyll & Hyde is a 1990 musical loosely based on the 1886 novella Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson. Originally conceived for the stage by Frank Wildhorn and Steve Cuden, it features music by Frank Wildhorn, a book by Leslie Bricusse and lyrics by all of them. After a world premiere run in Houston, Texas, the musical embarked on a national tour of the United States prior to its Broadway debut in 1997. Many international productions in various languages have since been staged including two subsequent North American tours, two tours in the United Kingdom, a concert version, a re-vamped US tour in 2012, a 2013 Broadway revival featuring Constantine Maroulis, and an Australian concert version in 2019. A New Life depicts Jekyll's love interest Lucy, dreaming for a new life without the fear of Hyde, however Hyde enters and finds a love note from Dr Jekyll to Lucy. In a fit of jealousy Hyde stabs her to death not knowing that he himself is Dr Jekyll.

Thames Journey is a 10-minute musical journey that follows the river Thames from its origins, as a few drops of water in Wiltshire, to the point where it meets the open sea at Greenwich. Along the way, Hess draws upon many musical links along the Thames, such as an old Wiltshire melody, morris dancing in Oxfordshire, boating songs from Berkshire and street songs in London. DIFFICULTY: 2nd+. DURATION: 10'00". 'Ceremony' was commisioned by Musica da Domat, Switzerland and their Musical Director Gian Stecher in 2019. The concept of the work revolves around a number of religious processions which take place around the mountainous region of Graubunden in the south of the country and in more musical terms, a specific setting of the 'Stabat Mater' (heard in fragments throughout the piece, but only at the finale is it heard in it's entirety) which is traditionally the ceremonies around this area. Through-composed yet in 4 clear sections, 'Ceremony' opens with 3 fanafare trumpets/cornets positioned antiphonally across the back of the stage, each paired with a different pitched tenor drum, and in a different key - inspired by the idea of being able to hear the different ceremonies from all regions of Graubunden echoing up the valley in equal strength. Following this opening fanfare section, the procession around the hills begins with a tongue-in-cheek quasi-march in a far more upbeat and jovial mood. The centrepiece of the work is simply entitled 'Echoes', and once again returns to the idea of music breaking the almost eerie-silence as it reverberates around the vast valleys, before the culmination of the piece returns to material from the opening 'Ceremony' section in a more grandioso and bold style. . .

DURATION: 12'00". DIFFICULTY: 1st+. 'Four Courtly Dances' was composed for Brass Band Burgermusik Luzern in 2025 for their Brass & Sport Gala Concert in the KKL Luzern. The work is a tribute to career of Swiss Tennis great Roger Federer with each movement giving a musical 'nod' to the story of his life and career. Each movement is inspired by a traditional 'courtly' (not in a tennis sense, but that was the idea!) dance:. 1. Inspiration (Almain) . The opening movement is subtitled 'Elegance on Court', backed by a deep-rooted sense of Swiss nationlism, featuring a prelude based upon the traditional Swiss song 'Guggisberglied'. . 2. Success & Failure (Galliard) . A movement centred around the trials and tribulations of an elite sportsperson, with antiphonal cornet & tambourine groups playing avirtuosic musical tennis match across the band. . 3. Rivalry (Sarabande & Canario) . An upbeat movement fused with Spanish and Balkan influences, inspired by Federer's long-running rivalries with Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. . 4. Legacy (Pavane) . A final reflective and uplifting homage to the legacy leftby one of the greatest sportspeople of all time, culminating in a coda whichbrings together all the previous 'ingredients' which made Federer the icon he is. . .

A Poem against War A Poem against War was commissioned by Psalm 150, Dinxperlo for the project Leven in Vrijheid!.Starting point of the composition of this piece was the poem A Poem against War from the American poet Karen Kapowich. The poem tells of young lives that are broken in their start because of war.A monument - founded in memory of the soldiers who gave their lives - is hardly noticed and even ignored. Children find the tree-sheltered memorial place rather scary and even the narrator speeds up his stride when passing. Underlying theme is the otiosity of war.The musical piece is composed of two parts that are being played without interruption. The first part explains the drama of the battle. The second part is based on the poem of Karen Karpowich in which we look back on the sacrifices that have been made. The text is sung by a Mezzo Soprano and emphasizes the bloodshed that comes along with every war. The opening theme returns at the end of the piece but in a complete metamorphosis, wherein optimism and vigor take place for resignation knowing that history repeats itself time and time again. A Poem against War had its premiere on 25th November 2012 in de DRU Cultuurfabriek in Ulft by Fanfare-orchestra Psalm 150, Dinxperlo led by Tijmen Botma. £187.00The Maestro - Andrew Pearce
The Maestro, a concertino voor trompet en band, was commissioned by Philip Cobb, principal trumpet of the London Symphony Orchestra. I spent most of Summer 2011 in Prague and London composing this demanding piece, for this was a wonderful opportunity to write a large scale work for one of the world's finest Trumpet virtuosos and I accepted the assignment with great enthusiasm. I also felt a great responsibility to deliver a tour de force for this world class player that was both challenging and enjoyable. Phil was seeking melodies and themes in the piece and had enjoyed my album 'Cinema Symphony', and the dramatic vistas it conjured up. Before writing began, I listened to his beautiful album 'Life Abundant' many times, ensuring I had his sound in my head while writing. The piece represents the many aspects of a contemporary trumpeter's musical life from; brass band chorale (a homage to Phil's musical roots), to the symphonic concert hall to the film recording studio. I am delighted to have had Phil and the International Staff Band record this work under the baton of Dr Stephen Cobb. Its a tour de force not only for the soloist but also for the band and should be an exciting challenge for the very best bands out there.
