Commissioned for BrassFestUK 2017 & recorded by the Cory Band, the Spirit of Brass is an exciting, new energetic work that will fit perfectly into any concert, particularly as an opening item. With memorable themes, the composition takes its roots from that of John Williams' various Olympic themes that he has composed over the years. As well as this training band version, there is also a full band version of the work available for mainstream bands. The two versions work as standalone items, or can be performed side-by-side. A great new original piece for Brass Band.

£59.62Variations on 'Sine Nomine' (Brass Band) Andrew Wainwright
This magnificent work was written in 2019 for the London Central Fellowship Band and Bandmaster David Rudd. It is based on the hymn tune by Ralph Vaughan Williams, which is also known as For all the Saints. Its release in the summer of 2022 marks the 150th anniversary of Vaughan Williams' birth. The work is set in four contrasting movements, which follow an opening statement of the hymn in its full form. Variation I (Leggiero) is based on the first few notes of the chorale and is lively and sprightly in nature, with regular time changes permeating throughout. There are regular statements of the hymn, with the movement closing with a full statement of the tune in its full glory. Variation II (Andante Espressivo) derives its material from the final strain of the verse. The music is generally calm and ethereal in nature before building to an impassioned fortissimo featuring the full band, and finally dying away. Variation III (Allegro Vivace) is in compound time and, like Variation I, is based on the first few notes of the hymn. The music is joyful and playful, epitomised by syncopated rhythms, and snippets of the tune are heard throughout. Variation IV (Allegro Giocoso) is in the form of a fugue which commences with the cornets, before the theme is handed to each section of the band at various points. After several statements of the theme, the music grows into the final strain of the chorale, which is given a grandiose setting. A frenzied Presto coda leads into organ-like chords, before a series of upward major scales bring the work to its final chord. Broadheath was commissioned by the Elgar International Brass Band Summer School for their 2024 course. The premiere took place in the Routh Hall at Bromsgrove School on Friday 26 July.It is in conventional march form, opening with a brief fanfare before the horns take up the main theme. This is then repeated by the full band before euphoniums and baritone announce the second subject. This builds to a stirring tutti passage utilising elements of the opening theme, which brings the opening section to a close.In honour of the summer school's tribute to Sir Edward Elgar (it is held in 'Elgar country'), the trio uses the opening melody of his 1st symphony as its main theme, decorating it with filigree work from the cornets. This is repeated on the full band and leads to a varied recapitulation of the opening material to bring the march full circle.Duration: 5.00

Arranged for brass band by Lynda Nicholson Patapan is a French Christmas Carol written by the French composer, Bernard de la Monnoye (1641-1720). The words are written from the perspective of the Shepherds in Bethlehem, playing their drums and flutes at the birth of Jesus. " Patapan" mimics the sound of the drums and the scale passages on the the flutes. Patapan begins with a solo side drummer playing a punchy rhythm in 2/2 with a tambourine being added before this rhythm underpins the melody played by the full band. A section featuring the trombones follows before the main theme returns after which a short duet for Euphonium and flugal leads into a rousing final section with a Rock feel. This final section has the full band playing with the tunes in the cornets, a fast quaver movement in the middle of the band and cleverly, the melody in counterpoint in augmentation played by the trombones. £74.53Gothique Fantasy - On a theme by Boellmann (Brass Band) Andrew Wainwright
This magnificent work was commissioned by The Illinois Brass Band for the 2024 North American Brass Band Championships. Based on Leon Boellmann's epic organ work Suite Gothique, the 3rd movement of which is entitled Priere a Notre-Dame (A Prayer for Notre Dame), it pays tribute to the nearly 700-year-old Notre-Dame de Paris after the fire which did so much damage to this iconic building. Notre-Dame stands out for its three pipe organs (one historic) and its immense church bells, which are referenced at various times in Gothique Fantasy. Two of the other movements from Boellmann's work also provide inspiration for the piece, firstly the Introduction - Choral, and the famous Toccata, snippets of which appear at various times in the piece. Gothique Fantasy opens with the Choral, a solo offstage cornet sounding the opening statement. A quintet, stood to the side of the stage, takes up the Choral, while the rest of the band enters on held muted notes, creating a sustained effect evoking the harmonies spreading across the vast cathedral. Colossal organ-like sounds announce themselves as the full band takes on the theme. A lively Animato follows. Here there are continued references to the Choral, while the famous Toccata motif starts to appear. A Misterioso section ensues, which leads into a poignant Prayer for Notre Dame featuring a euphonium duet, where the music reflects upon the devasting fire and centuries of history and artefacts that were lost. A lone euphonium the sounds, representing the remaining remnants of the cathedral. A chaotic and rhythmic Presto, based on the Toccata, then follows and tests the technique of the band from top to bottom, whilst moving through various time signatures, the pulse lacking any sense of stability. A return to the Choral theme leads into a further reflective section, this time featuring the secondary theme from the Toccata with a flugel and solo horn duet. Next the music arrives at an aleatory section (Senza Misura), which depicts the remnants of the fire, followed by the grand cathedral emerging out of the ashes. Various motifs from earlier in the piece are heard across the band. At this point, various parts enter at different times on the conductor's signal, before building towards a 6/8 Presto. Here the music gathers momentum as it leads to a Grandioso finale featuring the Choral in all its glory. However, to conclude the work, the final strains of the Toccata sound, bringing the work to a glorious conclusion as Notre-Dame rises again! This warm-up is designed to help players and conductors hear and improve section, group, and full band intonation, rhythmic precision, and balance in an efficient and musically satisfying way. The tune Nicaea was selected because of its easy-to-hear triads and intervals, and the harmonisation used throughout is purposely simple and consistent, so that the players can become very familiar with potential intonation trouble spots. Likewise, discrepancies in precision and balance will easily be heard. Keys have been carefully selected to expose specific intonation problems within the sections and groups, like the overlap between Eb and Bb instruments in the horns/baritones and later in euphoniums/basses, and 5th position tuning in the trombones. The format in sections 2 through 5 is consistent, beginning with a single section of the band playing in unison, then expanding into two-part and four-part harmony. After eight bars that section is joined by another section or sections to form a common multi-section group used in brass band scoring, such as the 'mellow choir', 'low brass', 'tuba-euphonium choir', and 'bright choir'. Section 6 features the two largest groupings, the 'all but cornets' and 'high brass'. Section 7 brings the whole band together for a majestic and powerful finish. £76.99Tango for Joe (Trombone Solo with Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip
Tango for Joe was written for Joe Alessi, principal trombone of the New York Philharmonic. He gave the official premiere with the Brass Band of Battle Creek on 3rd December 2022 at the W K Kellogg Auditorium in Battle Creek, Michigan.Opening with an (optional) unaccompanied recitative for the soloist, Tango for Joe then develops into a slow and sensuous tango, exploring the lyrical properties of the trombone. The opening of this theme is then taken up by the full band but is soon interrupted by a highly decorated version of the melody by the soloist. A further cadenza-like passage then leads to a faster 'tango nuevo' which makes up the majority of the work.A long introduction by the band builds to the first entry of the soloist, who plays the main tango melody over a rhythmic accompaniment. This is taken up briefly by the band but the soloist enters again with his own variation on the theme. After a bridge passage featuring a brief 'question and answer' exchange between the instruments, the soloist then plays a new version of the opening slow tango theme over rhythmic interpolations. After a climax, the soloist presents a long and elaborate cadenza accompanied only by a solo cajon or drum kit. This eventually leads to a repeat of the main theme and , after a short second cadenza, the piece ends with a flourish for band and soloist.Duration: 8.45
