This Gustav Holst piece contains three Carols: Good Christian Men, Rejoice, God Rest ye Merry Gentlemen and Come, ye lofty, come, ye lowly, (Old Breton Melody) with a little The First Nowell thrown in for good measure. It has been arranged here for the full brass band and has had light percussion parts added to complement. It starts with the band in full chord and then pairs down to solo instruments playing Good Christian Men monophonically. This piece has all of the essential elements of Holst's harmony and tension while retaining the joy of Christmas. It ends quietly and reflectively and works very well in large acoustics such as a Church building or large town hall.

A vibrant, rhythmic solo for trombone and bandLa Chica sin Nombre was written in March 2020 at the request of Brett Baker. He wanted something in Latin style so I chose to go for a Mambo-type dance piece. In obtaining the right percussion sound I would always ask for Conga drums and Mambo Bell/Timbales rather than drum kit. The piece needs to be played with an appropriate feel for Latin music. It should sound light and easy to play but has a few tricky moments- especially the cadenza-like sections from F to H. Dating from 1986 Prisms (Symphonic Study No. 2 for Brass band) was extensively revised in 1988 to form the preent work. Though not programmatic as such, the work has its roots in traditional brass band music, being strongly melodic and adopting a broad ternary form. The main themes call all be traced to the fourth-based first subject, these offshoots drawing a parallel with light refraction - Prisms. As well as the lyrical sections, much of the music is highly rhythmic, with a busy percussion section, and accesible and enjoyable to all. Duration: 13:00

The title Lux Aeterna (Eternal Light) can he interpreted on a number of levels. Musically it has a rather mystical feel to it,?and the single note with which the piece begins continues uninterrupted throughout, like an inextinguishable flame, or?a constant source of hope. The music is solid and rugged.The Coach Road: Hungerford was always a popular resting place for the horse drawn coaches on the way to London. The music is light and cheerful and features the soprano cornet and solo horn as postilions.St. Lawrence's Church: The previous motif from the first baritone becomes the main theme for this section that gives plenty of scope for warm and expressive playing. Music from the start of the suite is heard before it moves into a celebratory march.The Bear: The Bear Is a local inn frequented by travellers. The opening theme is heard again and brings the work to a triumphant close.Suitable for 4th Section Bands and above
