    A Gallimaufry Suite - Harper, P

I - Fanfare & ThemeII - SongIII - HymnIV - Toccata & FinaleA Gallimaufry Suite consists of four movements, all thematically independent. Thefirst movement consists of a sparkling Fanfare followed by a stately Theme whichends quietly. The second movement is a Children's Song; quirky but cute, and theHymn which follows is a study in calm and tranquillity, featuring a quartet-groupof cornet, baritone, trombone and euphonium. The last movement is a virtuosicToccata which eventually begins to recall the other themes of the suite before agrand reprise of the first movement Theme brings the work to a dazzlingconclusion.Approximate duration: 11 minutes

    Finale to Act I of Tosca - Puccini, G - Harper, P

The spectacular Te Deum from the Finale to Act I of Tosca, it begins quietly with the tolling bell as worshippers gather for Mass. The euphonium plays the part of the villainous Scarpia as the music gathers strength. Finally the doors of the church are thrown open and the glorious Te Deum fills the hallowed space.Featured on the CD Cory in Concert Volume V.1st SectionDuration 5 minsListen to Cory BandCourtesy of World of Brass

    Lux Aeterna - Harper, P

The title Lux Aeterna (Eternal Light) can be interpreted on a number of levels. Musically it has a rather mystical feel to it, and the single note with which the piece begins continues uninterrupted throughout, like an inextinguishable flame, or a constant source of hope. There are lyrical and song-like solo lines for cornet, flugel and euphonium. In a recent review Paul Hindmarsh described the piece as a touching new work by Philip Harper that would have got my vote for best new work for its technical ingenuity if not its ‘wow factor’.Listen to Cory BandCourtesy of World of Brass

Composed to commemorate the life Henry Nichols, killed in the Battle of the Somme in 1917, the music has a peaceful tranquillity, but also a deep sense of tragedy and loss. It ends positively, with the wish that hope can come from desperation.
