Richard Strauss (1864 - 1949) was a famous conductor and composer when he wrote Feierlicher Einzug der Ritter des Johanniter-Ordens (Solemn Entrance of the Knights of the Order of Saint John) in 1909. One of only a handful of his works written exclusively for winds, Strauss composed Feierlicher Einzug for the investiture ceremonies of the Order of St. John, a Christian military order that was founded in Jerusalem in 1023 to care for poor, sick, or injured pilgrims journeying to the Holy Land.Strauss scored Feierlicher Einzug (TrV 224) for a large ensemble of fifteen trumpets, four horns, four trombones, two tubas and timpani. He saw enough potential in its stately character and majestic conclusion to produce a version for symphony orchestra with organ and it has been arranged for a variety of brass ensembles with or without organ since then.This version for British style brass band was adapted from the original in 1990 by Paul Hindmarsh for the exclusive use of Besses o' th' Barn Band, of which he was then the musical director. Now that the music of Richard Strauss published in his lifetime is in the public domain, Solemn Procession, as it has been rendered in English, can be enjoyed by all brass bands and their audiences.- Paul HindmarshDuration: 6.00

£40.00Shackleton's Cross (Cornet Solo with Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Goodall, Howard - Hall, Daniel
Shackleton's Cross was inspired by a painting created in 1957 by the English artist Edward Seago (1910 1974). The title refers to a cross which was erected to the memory of Sir Ernest Shackleton, who led a number of explorations to the Antarctic. Shackleton died in 1922 whilst on a Polar expedition, and the cross can be found on a promontory at the entrance to the bay at Grytviken Whaling Station in South Georgia. The painting is owned by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, and was part of an exhibition at Buckingham Palace from October 2011 to April 2012. Originally scored for oboe, trumpet and small orchestra, Daniel Hall's sensitive arrangement for trumpet or cornet and brass band follows the composer's alternative version for solo trumpet and organ, created for Crispian Steele-Perkins (trumpet) and David Goode (organ). The Latin word "Introitus" means 'entry'. Originally, this was a psalm sung to accompany the entrance of a bishop, priest or celebrant into the church. Later it was incorporated into the mass with alternating sung and spoken text, reflecting the mood of the liturgy. Jacob de Haan's Introitus, in which he has arranged the hymns Puer natus est nobis and Lobt Gott, Ihr Christen alle gleich, is a wonderful introduction to the Christmas season and can be performed with any instrumental combination with mixed choir and organ ad libitum.Duration: 4:00

A flourish: a crowd assembles at the gate of Heaven, saints and sinners. As in a film the immensity of the crowd is illustrated, and the camera zooms to focus onparticular groups and individuals. Monks sing a 'medieval' hymn, interrupted by the fanfares of mischievous seraphim; gradually the whole crown join in. The fanfares grow wilder, and grubby, naughty children enter, singing mock fanfares, making jazzy gestures and trying to sing a chirldren's hymn. They are joined by roughnecks who take up the fanfare idea. The camera zooms again at the entrance of Jesus. A commanding flourish causes consternation. Separate groups react, interrupted by mysterious percussion effects. Then, as the whole panorama explodes in sound, William Booth (founder of the Salvation Army) approaches awestruck. A triple Alleluia is followed by the third hymnand further Alleluias. A dance finale begins using material from the whole piece. A tumultuous climax preceds sudden quiet Alleluias, and the crown exits into Heaven to the music of the monks, reharmonised and transformed. The camera shots extend to the heavens and the stars.
