I Shall Love But Thee is an occasional work in the literal sense of the word, since it was originally written on the occasion of the composer's youngest son's wedding. The texts, by William Shakespeare, inspired Jan Van der Roost to compose profound and appealing music, largely in the style of Henry Purcell (in the first part) and Georg Friedrich Handel (in the second part)--although no literal quotations have been used. The rather rare combination of soprano and brass band makes this piece a unique addition to the repertoire!Duration: 10.30

An Emerald Jubilee celebrates a 40th anniversary. Jan de Haan composed this colourfully orchestrated concert march to celebrate Will van der Beek's 40th anniversary as conductor of the Deutsche Musikverein Haaren. As publisher of van der Beek's transcriptions of classical works Jan de Haan can look back on many years of successful collaboration with the knowledge that there will be many more to come. Unusually cast in a minor key, the main theme provides an interesting contrast to the more melodic major key of the second movement. The relatively slow theme gives this march a dignified stately and subdued quality.

Lewis Carroll's novel Alice in Wonderland served as the basis for the new Walt Disney film. From Danny Elfman's soundtrack, Michael Brown used the titles Alice Returns, Alice's Theme and Bandersnatched for his enchanting medley that has been adapted for brass band by Klaas van der Woude.

£109.99Columbus - Rob Goorhuis
Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa in 1451. His father was a wool merchant. Originally he seemed destined to follow in his father's footsteps, and thus sailed the oceans to countries as far apart as Iceland and Guinea. In 1476 his ship was sunk during a battle off the coast of Portugal. Columbus saved his own life by swimming to shore. In 1484 he conceived the idea of sailing to the Indies via a westward sea route, but it was only in 1492 that he was able to realize this plan. On this first voyage he was in command of three ships: the flag-ship, called the Santa Maria, the Pinta, and the Ni?a. From Spain Columbus sailed via the Canary Islands to the Bahamas, whichhe sighted on October 12th 1492. Without being aware of it Columbus discovered the 'New World' he thought he had landed in the eastern part of Asia. The motif from Dvooak's 9th Symphony 'Aus der neuen Welt' forms a little counterfeit history at this point in the composition. After this first voyage Columbus was to undertake another three long voyages to America. These voyages were certainly not entirely devoid of misfortune. More than once he was faced with shipwreck, mutiny and the destruction of settlements he had founded. After Columbus had left for Spain from Rio Belen in 1503, he beached his ships on the coast of Jamaica. The crew were marooned there and it was only after a year that Columbus succeeded in saving his men and sailing back to Spain with them. In the music the misunderstanding about which continent Columbus discovered in his lifetime resounds, for does this part in the composition not contain Asiatic motifs? Poor Columbus! In 1506 the famous explorer died in Valladolid.

Other Lives is works perfectly for a competition but can also be programmed as concert work. The dark chords at the beginning of the piece are derived from "Der Doppelganger", one of Franz Schubert's late songs. After a short development the music begins to accelerate and find its own shape, gradually moving away from the introduction. The entire first part, "Rage", has an intensely agitated character. The ensuing "Reflection" turns back to the initial chord progression, before a series of interspersing solos explore time and space at a slower pace. After another musical surge, the music is brought close to silence and then gives way to the third part, "Redemption".Here, a widely spaced sound field contains a remote allusion to another work by Schubert "Ruckblick". After this farewell, an abstract musical transformation triggers an emotional change, as the initial motifs are now presented in their inversed form in order to create a much brighter harmonic landscape. Moreover, in the last part of the piece, "Renewal", the grim, tense atmosphere of the first part is transformed into a great energy. Other Lives was commissioned by the Valaisia Brass Band.

Drawing inspiration from the beloved 18th-century hymn Ich bete an die Macht der Liebe (I Pray to the Power of Love), this arrangement transforms a timeless spiritual message into a profound musical experience. The foundation of this work lies in the 1822 melody by Dmitri Bortniansky. Originally set to the poetry of Gerhard Tersteegen, this dignified and contemplative theme has served as a cornerstone of ceremonial music for centuries, symbolising solace, reverence, and the liberating power of divine love. Unbounded Love is an intimate memorial dedicated to Hein Voskamp, a cherished soprano player and close friend of the composer. Born from a simple final request - to hear this hymn one last time - the piece became the composer's way of navigating grief and expressing gratitude when words were no longer enough. This beautiful arrangement of the much loved tenor solo The Three Kings was made for the GUS Band and euphonium soloist Mark Giles, for the CD recording Christmas Fantasia - The Music of Andrew Wainwright (2013). The Three Kings, or Three Kings From Persian Lands Afar, is a Christmas carol by the German composer Peter Cornelius. He set Die Konige for a vocal soloist, accompanied by Philip Nicolai's hymn Wie schon leuchtet der Morgenstern ('How Brightly Shines the Morning Star'), which he erroneously thought was an Epiphany hymn. In fact, it is an Advent hymn in which the morning star is an allegory for the arrival of Jesus, not the Star of Bethlehem. In Cornelius' original second setting, the accompaniment was played on a piano but the English organist Ivor Atkins later arranged the accompaniment for choir, with the choir singing the words of the original hymn. The carol describes the visit of the Biblical Magi to the Infant Jesus during the Nativity and is also used as an Epiphany anthem. The opera The Flying Dutchman (Der Fliegende Hollander) was first performed in Dresden in 1843, conducted by the composer, who had also written the libretto, and 27 years later became Wagner's first opera to be performed in London. The opera describes the search of a Dutch sea-captain for a woman who will be faithful to him. The very popular overture encapsulates much of the story-line of the opera, including the wild swirling ocean, a strong motif depicting the hero and tender music associated with Senta, the lady he seeks. This brass band arrangement was initially prepared for the 50th anniversary in 1983 of the GUS Band, which the arranger was successfully directing at the time.
