Ireland is a multi-faceted country that has developed a popular and distinctive musical culture. The first movement of Dublin Pictures reflects Irish festivals where there is dancing and traditional beer flowing. More tranquil in its feel, the second movement illustrates the landscape that can be seen from the Ha'penny Bridge, a bridge that crosses the River Liffey in Dublin. This movement highlights the wide range of the orchestra's sound colours as the musicians' voices combine with the wind and percussion to accompany the soloist. The lively and joyful rhythms of the last movement take the listener to Temple Bar, the famous tourist quarter of the city, well known for its vibrant nightlife. The music's energy and virtuosic motifs are in contrast to the previous movement and provide a spirited and festive finale.Marc Jeanbourquin wrote this piece in three movements for Azimuts Brass in 2011.Duration: 7:45

With such rich and diverse sources of music across several counties and centuries, this has quite understandably become one of Hess's most popular works to date. The English king, Henry VIII (1491-1547), is mainly remembered for disposing of his wives on a regular basis and breaking with the Catholic Church when the Pope Clement VII refused to grant him a divorce so he could marry Anne Boleyn. He was, however, a gifted athlete, dancer and composer, writing many songs, poems and consort pieces (though not Greensleeves, as is often believed). Pastime with Good Company is undoubtedly the best-known of these, written in the first years of the 16th century while he was still a handsome prince, newly married to Catherine of Aragon and the envy of Europe. The lyrics tell of the joys of hunting, dancing and singing and would have been sung as part of the court entertainment.Duration: 6:00

The first movement uses Robert Burns's 'When Chill November's surly blast made field and forest bare' - a musical depiction of a Scottish highland landscape in crisp mid-winter. Movement 2 takes Dylan Thomas's 'Though lovers be lost, love shall not' and showcases soloists performing their individual love stories, finishing with an adaptation of the Welsh national anthem, whilst the third movement quotes the Irish poer, Yeats. The music links the Isle of Man and Ireland, opening with the Manx national anthem and traditional Manz dancing, before leading to a Dublin dance scene. Movement 4 quotes Shakespeare's 'Be not afraid of greatness', opening with a fanfare by percussion, then moving into Holst's In the Bleak Mid Winter and to the seventh variation of Elgar's Enigma Variations, Nimrod.
