Brass Monkey's Soloists - Martin Geovess
The main goal of any training band is to eventually see the players progress through the ranks and ultimately, be placed within the senior band. This latest instalment of the Brass Monkeys series, aims to bring that goal much closer and boost the confidence of the learners. The 'Brass Monkey's Soloists' publication features four specially composed works which allows the young soloists to perform a feature piece with accompaniment from the senior band. Composed by Carlton Main Frickley Band's Composer-in-Residence, Celebration is an epic concert opener composed to begin any programme with an exciting fanfare & hymn style structure. The work opens with 'exultant' fanfares throughout the cornet section & flugel, before a heroic theme is heard in the trombones. After the bold fanfare opening, the music settles into a setting of the hymn, Eventide which features a flugel solo. The middle section of the piece gives the band chance to showcase a warm and sostenuto sound before a reprise of the opening fanfare material is combined with Eventide and the heroic theme to bring the piece to an exciting finale.

This light-hearted soprano cornet feature offers a fresh and entertaining take on the well-known Christmas carol We Wish You a Merry Christmas. Thought to date back to 16th-century England, the carol reflects a tradition of festive singing outside the homes of the well-to-do - often accompanied by requests for treats such as figgy pudding, a forerunner of today's Christmas pudding. Kenneth Downie's arrangement embraces the jovial spirit of the original, pairing nimble soprano cornet writing with bright, colourful scoring for brass band. The famous refrain, 'And we won't go until we've got some', sets the tone: cheerful, a touch cheeky, and full of seasonal good humour. Meditation is the central theme from The Triumph of Time, a work commissioned for The Black Dyke Band by Music Director Nicholas Childs. The original brief was for a piece which would showcase the talents of the band's many fine soloists, among them Zoe Hancock on Flugel horn and Baritone soloist Katrina Marzella. This extract brings both instruments together in an extended stand-alone arrangement.Although scored for Flugel and Baritone, a number of options can be explored at the discretion of the conductor (eg. Flugel/Cornet and Euphonium/Trombone; two Bb Cornets etc. in which case cued lines in the Solo Horn and Soprano cornet parts may be played).Duration: 05:00

Love Eternal was arranged by Gavin Lamplough for trombone virtuoso Isobel Daws to perform in a special concert with the Melbourne Staff Band to honour its Bandmaster Ken Waterworth, on the occasion of his retirement after 30 years of leading the band. The arranger uses Jarod Cooper's popular contemporary worship song King of Kings, Majesty as the basis for the work and the piece seeks to provide a vehicle for the rich timbres of the trombone to be enjoyed by the listener.
