Glory Fanfare was commissioned by the Brass Band of Upper-Austria for the 2010 European Brass Band Championships in Linz, and was performed as the fi rst piece in the gala concert. It is a tradition at Marlow High School, Oklahoma, that the band members' parents host a Band Banquet every May, at which the senior members of the band present a gift to the band director as a token of gratitude for his year's work. In 2009, clarinet player Brenna Hensley had the idea to commission a new piece from composer Philip Sparke to present to band director Billy Daniel, which would be played at the Spring Concert later that month. Salute to a Hero was the result.The piece opens with a decorated fanfare played on cornets and trombones and, after a short bridge passage, this reappears, played by the full band. A central lyrical section brings a mood of calm, utilisingdifferent brass colours, before the fanfare returns to close the work.

This work by Swiss composer Oliver Waespi was one of the highlights at the 2006 Eidgenossische Musikfest in Lucerne. The piece opens with a festive fanfare featuring the brass section. The mood changes to a funk passage which develops and grows into a James Brown-like groove. It also includes an ad libitum drum solo. A slow blues lends a calmer feel and the piece culminates with striking interwoven fanfare and funk styles. This work is highly recommended for concert programmes but it can also make a spectacular, unconventional choice for a competition.

Several years ago, I attended an Imperial Brass concert in the United States, which featured soloist Sheona White on tenor horn. I was so impressed with her playing that I asked if I could write something for her. The result of the conversation is this piece, Romance for Horn. I thought I'd compose something melodically flowing with grace and tenderness that was very carefully crafted to match Sheona's beautiful sound on the tenor horn. As for the overall structure of the work, it basically consists of flowing melodic lines in the solo part supported by a pulsing harmonic current that runs throughout. Lord of the Lake is a work in three separate movements which tells the legend of the "Sea of Flines". Stephane Coquet, the conductor of the Flines-lez-Raches concert band, wanted to celebrate the 140th anniversary of his band by commissioning this work. The piece can be performed either on its own, or with a narrator who intervenes between each movement, telling this legend where children and their parents thwart the cruelty of a lord holed up in his castle.
