Libera Me from 'Requiem' (Brass Band) Faure arr. Rob Bushnell

Composed between 1887 and 1890, Gabriel Faure's Requiem is not only one of his best-known works but one of the most popular piece of choral music in the Classical repertoire, coming 23rd in the Classic FM's Hall of Fame 2024. Believed to be a tribute to his father (who died in 1885), Faure himself said "My Requiem wasn't written for anything - for pleasure, if I may call it that!" It started life as a five-movement work but was later expanded to be the final seven-movement work we know today. The first version (which Faure called "un petit Requiem") was first performed on 16 January 1888, with Faure conducting, a second version premiered on 21 January 1893 before the final version (reworked for full orchestra) was played on 12 July 1900; the Requiem was performed at the composer's own funeral in 1924.The Libera Me, or Deliver Me, was actually written in 1877 and is the sixth part of the Requiem.Faure once said of the work, "Everything I managed to entertain by way of religious illusion I put into my Requiem, which moreover is dominated from beginning to end by a very human feeling of faith in eternal rest." Upon interview, he also said, "It has been said that my Requiem does not express the fear of death and someone has called it a lullaby of death. But it is thus that I see death: as a happy deliverance, an aspiration towards happiness above, rather than as a painful experience. The music of Gounod has been criticised for its inclination towards human tenderness. But his nature predisposed him to feel this way: religious emotion took this form inside him. Is it not necessary to accept the artist's nature? As to my Requiem, perhaps I have also instinctively sought to escape from what is thought right and proper, after all the years of accompanying burial services on the organ! I know it all by heart. I wanted to write something different."This arrangement is for the British-style brass band, with alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. The tenor solo is featured on the euphonium. A recording of the original composition can be found here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXwFNoBHCf0 Duration: 4.20 minutes approx. Peace in Our Time (Brass Band) Andrew Wainwright

Commissioned by Armonico Consort to mark the 85th anniversary of the Coventry Blitz, Peace in Our Time is a profoundly moving reflection on humanity's enduring quest for reconciliation amidst turmoil. Originally scored for choir, orchestra, and organ, this masterful brass band transcription beautifully captures the emotional weight of John Oxenham's evocative poetry and the timeless plea of Psalm 122. The work opens in hushed reverence, where distant muted cornets, a dark bass pedal, and a fragile, militaristic snare drum set a shadowed, contemplative scene. Out of this delicate landscape emerges a poignant cornet solo that yields to the expressive voice of the solo flugel horn, carrying the opening text with quiet conviction before introducing the solemn reminder: "O pray for peace, peace in Jerusalem." As the piece progresses, the setting turns darker and more restless. Harmonic tension builds through rich brass textures to reflect the fears, divisions, and heavy costs of historical and modern conflict. From this emotional turbulence rises a bold, ceremonial fanfare that marks a dramatic turning point, ushering in a glorious, expansive setting of the poem's final verse. Yet rather than ending in simple triumph, the music gently recedes into a serene and tender stillness. The final bars leave performers and audiences alike with a quiet, lingering echo - a persistent hope for peace that resonates just as deeply today as it did 85 years ago. This substantial work is an extraordinary addition to any brass band library, serving as an ideal centerpiece for Remembrance Sunday, historical commemorations, church services or serious concert programming. Sleigh Ride Suite (Brass Band) Leopold Mozart arr. Alex McGee

Today Leopold Mozart (1719-1787) is known almost exclusively as the stern father of Wolfgang, but he was a prominent and successful musician in his own time. The Sleigh Ride, composed just before Wolfgang was born, certainly shows that Mozart the elder had as good a sense of humour as his more famous son. Wolfgang must, in fact, have known and enjoyed his father's piece - he included a short Sleigh Ride in his German Dances, K.605, in 1791. Leopold's more complicated piece is a programmatic serenade, with short titles for each section: a musical picture of a cold evening's ride to a party. The score calls for sleigh bells, rattle, a whip, and triangle. The action begins with a short overture (Intrada), followed by the Sleigh Ride itself, a lively duple-meter dance accompanied by jangling sleigh bells and punctuated by the cracking of a whip. There is then a nice bit of musical pantomime - The Young Lady Shivers With Cold. The sleigh finally arrives at the party, a ball with a small dance orchestra. The Ball Begins, not surprisingly, with a courtly menuet, and the End of the Ball is a spirited Kehraus, a lively rondo-form dance. This transcription faithfully seeks to convey the light touch of the Age of Enlightenment to the modern brass band and provides ensembles with new material for their annual Christmas concerts. Temperamental (Brass Band) Fendall Hill

This work by Fendall Hill was the set test for the 2021 National Brass Band Championships of New Zealand, B Grade. The composer writes: 'J.S. Bach (1685-1750) is deemed by many to be the 'Ulimate Composer'. He added an incredible proportion to the DNA of western music, and his influence is heard in the music of today. Like many artists, he was not overly recognised as a composer during his lifetime, and it took an 1829 performance of the St Matthew Passion by Mendelssohn to ignite a recognition of his place in the music world, a place he has maintained ever since. This piece starts with a similar spark of rediscovery of the music of Bach. It contains arrangements of various works, interspersed with composition based on Bach's chord structures, sections in the style of Bach, and original sections inspired by the moods created along the way. The first section explores the Toccata, and great organ works. This leads into an exploration of his choral works, and a finale based on the Preludes. The word 'Tempered' has different meanings, and all seem to apply to the music of Bach, and these appeal to the musical, engineering and spiritual aspects of my personal life. His music reaches to the humanity and divinity, it has strength, structure and order that creates frameworks in which incredible complexity reigns; and the complexity leads to a wildness, a kind of craziness that represents a range of human moods, and can change without warning. The same piece of music affects people in very different ways. I don't know if it's Bach's music, or us, but it can seem out of control and under control at the same time - the combination is highly temperamental. CHALLENGE, The (Trumpet Solo with Brass Band Set) - Eric Ball

Originally written for trumpet and piano in 1935, this solo exploits the character of the trumpet to good effect. It is a measure of the quality of Eric Ball's music that 'The Challenge' stands up today as fresh in its brass band guise as it did in its first published version.

Amazing Grace (W. Walker arr. by Paul Pennicotte-Henrie) - Brass Band Sheet Music Full Score and Parts - LM642

COMPOSER: W. WalkerARRANGER: Paul Pennicotte-Henrie"Amazing Grace" is a Christian hymn published in 1779 by English Anglican clergyman, abolitionist, and poet John Newton. It is possibly the most sung and most recorded hymn in the world and is especially popular in the United States, where it is used for both religious and secular purposes. Newton wrote the words from personal experience; he grew up without any particular religious conviction, but his life's path was formed by a variety of twists and coincidences that were often put into motion by others' reactions to what they took as his recalcitrant insubordination. He was pressed into service with the Royal Navy, and after leaving the service, he became involved in the Atlantic slave trade. In 1748, a violent storm battered his vessel off the coast of County Donegal, Ireland, so severely that he called out to God for mercy. While this moment marked his spiritual conversion, he continued slave trading until 1754 or 1755, when he ended his seafaring altogether. Newton began studying Christian theology and later became an abolitionist.Ordained in the Church of England in 1764, Newton became the curate of Olney, Buckinghamshire, where he began to write hymns with poet William Cowper. "Amazing Grace" was written to illustrate a sermon on New Year's Day of 1773. It is unknown if there was any music accompanying the verses; it may have been chanted by the congregation. It debuted in print in 1779 in Newton's and Cowper's Olney Hymns, but settled into relative obscurity in England. In the United States, "Amazing Grace" became a popular song used by Baptist and Methodist preachers as part of their evangelizing, especially in the American South, during the Second Great Awakening of the early 19th century. It has been associated with more than 20 melodies. In 1835, American composer William Walker set it to the tune known as "New Britain" in a shape note format; this is the version most frequently sung today.

DEUS INVICTUS - GOD UNCONQUERED (Brass Band Set) - Andrew Mackereth

Deus Invictus draws its inspiration from well-known words from Romans 8: 38-39; 'For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any owers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, can separate us from the love of God'. The music reflects the confidence and certainty of the scripture text while, as in everyday life, trials and tests come along which are reflected in a sequence of musical skirmishes. The work introduces the 19th century hymn 'St Albinus' to a wider audience and also includes references to the tunes 'St Margaret' and 'Rachie'. A setting of the Easter Hymn, 'Christ the Lord is risen today!', is heard followed by a final reprise of 'St Albinus'.

CALIFORNIA (Brass Band Set) - Emil Soderstrom

In retirement, Emil Soderstrom moved to California and honoured his new home with this light-hearted but demanding march. The composer has said that the motif given to the upper cornets in the second strain stands for 'Ca-li-for-nia'! His love of startling chromatic passages is evident in the 'break up' strain of the trio section which is marked by a sudden key change and a fragment of the song Sunshine in my soul today, a reference to the Californian weather.

HAPPY LAND (Cornet Solo with Brass Band Set) - Terry Camsey

This composition is a very challenging one for the soloist and requires the accompaniment to be subservient at all times. The soloist will find it helpful to, generally, adopt a very light and playful style. As a young aspiring cornet player, the composer was influenced by a number of soloists of that day, one being Del Staigers of the Goldman Band in the USA. Many of the musical motifs reflect that influence and it is hoped that this solo will, in turn, inspire the many aspiring cornet players of today.
