Jingle Bells Forever (Brass Band) Pierpont/Sousa/Smith arr. Lythaby

Jingle Bells Forever is a setting of two American favourites that weaves the melodic line from Pierpont's Jingle Bells with Sousa's umistakable march style. Drawn from The Stars and Stripes Forever, Sousa's immortal march that has become the official national march of the United States of America, the familiar strains provide the perfect accompaniment for the most festive of Christmas melodies. Sousa's famous grandioso with the piccolo descant (here scored for soprano cornet) and trombone countermelody draw this festive standard to a rousing conclusion. Its importance in the annual calendar to the players, supporters and spectators is vital to the Tameside and Saddleworth community. However, this mighty contest simply could not take place without the willing volunteers who dedicate their services year after year to keep this unique banding tradition going.Traditionally, on Whit Friday Morning, Hail! Smiling Morn (Roud #1346), also known as Praise Ye the Lord, is heard across the Saddleworth villages. This is where I have taken my inspiration, and the entire march is built upon quotes and references of this joyous work. The Stewards has many traditional elements drawing on the vast repertory of well-known marches, as well as some untraditional techniques and harmonies. The work aims to be a good test for the bands in its performance, but also fun and entertaining for the players and audiences alike - featuring a cheeky cornet solo, thunderous bass feature, and lyrical euphonium melodies, before concluding with a triumphant quote from the original source material. To you all who perform or hear this work, the stewards of the brass band tradition, HAIL! Pageant (Brass Band) Barrie Gott

Born during the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic, Pageant by Australian composer Barrie Gott transforms the simple interval of a fourth into an engaging, multi-faceted set of variations. Written specifically with 4th Section bands in mind, this work delivers rich textural contrast, clear educational rewards, and a crowd-pleasing arc that moves from regal tradition to high-energy rock. The piece opens with a majestic herald, setting a ceremonial tone as a warm, mellow melody dialogues with bright, fanfare-like brass. From there, the music moves through three distinct stylistic worlds: a delicate, nimble variation inspired by the craft of Eric Ball's A Little Suite for Band; a smooth, lyrical ballad featuring the solo cornet and flugel horn; and a high-energy finale grounded in a driving 6/8 rock groove, bringing the work to a dramatic, cinematic finish. Peace in Our Time (Brass Band) Andrew Wainwright

Commissioned by Armonico Consort to mark the 85th anniversary of the Coventry Blitz, Peace in Our Time is a profoundly moving reflection on humanity's enduring quest for reconciliation amidst turmoil. Originally scored for choir, orchestra, and organ, this masterful brass band transcription beautifully captures the emotional weight of John Oxenham's evocative poetry and the timeless plea of Psalm 122. The work opens in hushed reverence, where distant muted cornets, a dark bass pedal, and a fragile, militaristic snare drum set a shadowed, contemplative scene. Out of this delicate landscape emerges a poignant cornet solo that yields to the expressive voice of the solo flugel horn, carrying the opening text with quiet conviction before introducing the solemn reminder: "O pray for peace, peace in Jerusalem." As the piece progresses, the setting turns darker and more restless. Harmonic tension builds through rich brass textures to reflect the fears, divisions, and heavy costs of historical and modern conflict. From this emotional turbulence rises a bold, ceremonial fanfare that marks a dramatic turning point, ushering in a glorious, expansive setting of the poem's final verse. Yet rather than ending in simple triumph, the music gently recedes into a serene and tender stillness. The final bars leave performers and audiences alike with a quiet, lingering echo - a persistent hope for peace that resonates just as deeply today as it did 85 years ago. This substantial work is an extraordinary addition to any brass band library, serving as an ideal centerpiece for Remembrance Sunday, historical commemorations, church services or serious concert programming. Skidaddle (Brass Band) Barrie Gott

Skidaddle will be the perfect item to provide a lighter moment in your band's programme. The composer Barrie Gott writes: ''Skidaddle' literally means to move in a hurry. This piece means exactly that - to get moving. I was experimenting at the piano at school one morning waiting for my first students and this little ditty came to mind. Four hours later I had the first draft done! It is supposed to be a bit of fun with a few technical demands for cornet and euphonium in particular. The semi-quaver (sixteenth) work needs to be precise. Try and get the audience involved and they'll be yours for the larger works on the programme.' Swinging all the way (Brass Band) Dave Collins

Swinging all the way is a jazzy take on the most well known of Christmas tunes, Jingle Bells. We begin in a dark underground jazz club with the rich, luscious harmonies supporting the tune that we all know. But the melody is perhaps secondary to the timbres and dissonances of this darkly elegant ballad punctuated by the solo cornet, a contrast of styles between the joyous melody and sober accompaniment. As the work progresses it becomes more uplifting, with solo features from the trombone, before emerging into the bright lights of a big band set, with stride bass, crunchy punctuating rhythms and screaming trumpets. The arrangement ends where we began, after our exciting sleigh ride comes to an end. 'Mid all the traffic (Brass Band) Traditional arr. Andy Wareham

This stunning arrangement by British composer Andy Wareham is of the popular hymn 'Mid all the Traffic, which marries the North-American folksong Shenandoah set to lyrics by English journalist, novelist and poet William Arthur Dunkerley (written under the pseudonym of 'John Oxenham'). The hymn is very well-regarded in both the Salvation Army and wider brass band movement thanks to a popular arrangement by renowned Salvationist composer Leonard Ballantine. The arranger writes: 'This setting of 'Mid All The Traffic was originally composed during the Covid-19 pandemic as an octet arrangement for single instrument. My hope was to create an arrangement that offers an alternative view on harmony and could be multi-track recorded; allowing performers to give, and share, a performance whilst in isolation. The music was written in dedication to all of the 'key-workers' in the UK, especially in the NHS, who worked tirelessly throughout difficult conditions during the Covid-19 pandemic.' Abberline (Euphonium Solo with Brass Band) Karl Whelan

Inspired by the infamous investigation into Jack the Ripper, Abberline follows Detective Inspector Frederick Abberline through the mist-shrouded streets of Victorian London in his desperate pursuit of a killer who remains forever just out of reach. Scored for brass band and solo euphonium, the piece blends atmospheric textures, shifting musical identities, and virtuosic demands to capture a narrative that is as haunting as it is unresolved. The piece opens in a world of shadows - the foggy alleys of Whitechapel - where tension simmers beneath the surface. The euphonium enters cautiously, as if stalking unseen figures, echoing the danger and uncertainty that cloaked the city in fear. This eerie calm is broken suddenly: the Ripper strikes. The moment is brief but brutal, leaving only silence and horror in its wake. From here, the music shifts into an uneasy, angular waltz: the figure of Abberline takes center stage, portrayed by the soloist as he investigates the aftermath. The waltz is melodically off-kilter and harmonically unstable, capturing both the grotesque nature of the crime and the detective's mental burden. The scene then returns to the streets - but this time, the musical material is more intricate, fragmented, and tense. The threat has deepened, and again the silence is shattered by violence. A second, slightly altered waltz follows, further reflecting Abberline's obsessive descent into the case. In the final section, the chase begins in earnest. Themes from earlier return in quick succession, intensified and overlapping as time runs out. The ancient Dies Irae chant is woven into the texture, evoking fate and judgment. In a final, erratic surge, the euphonium and band race toward an ending that is breathless and unresolved - a reflection of history's unanswered questions and the ghost that always stayed one step ahead. Capriccio for Brass Band (Robbert Vos)

VIEW SCORE PDF Capriccio for Brass Band (Robbert Vos) was the winner of both the overall prize decided by the judges and Public Commendation prize for the 2020 International Brass Band Composer Competition, a contest that included some 92 entries from around the world. The composer writes: 'My Capriccio for Brass Band is a lively, intense and virtuosic piece based on several thematic, rhythmical and harmonic ideas which are developed during the piece. It is non-programmatic and not based on a storyline. The middle section, in contrary, is in more of a minimalistic style, where there is room to create a mysterious and open atmosphere. Rhythmical elements are quoted from the opening movement, whilst clashing chords are used to build up tension. The last movement builds to a big climax, where several of the compositorial ideas used before come together for the finale.' PDF download includes score and full set of parts. Cornish Fantasy (Euphonium Solo with Brass Band) David Taylor

VIEW SCORE PDF Cornish Fantasy was written for Kidlington Concert Brass's euphonium soloist Benjamin Abbott to perform in their Autumn 2021 series of concerts and contests. Based around a series of Cornish folk tunes, it pays tribute to Ben's Cornish roots, and in particular to his banding education with the Camborne Town Band. The solo opens with the 'unofficial Cornish anthem' Trelawny, which is followed with a series of virtuoso cadenzas. After these is an up-tempo jig in several segments, containing the traditional tunes Camborne Hill, Pendeen Jig, Newlyn Jig, Pencarrow, and Off She Goes, the latter two at a breakneck pace that carries through to a triumphant close.
