£33.20Swan Theme from 'Swan Lake' (Brass Band) Tchaikovsky arr. Jack Lythaby
Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake is made up of folk tales from Germany and Russia, and tells the story of Odette, a princess turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer's curse. The ballet was premiered on 4th March 1877 by the Bolshoi Ballet company in the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, and despite its initial failure, has become one of the greatest ballets ever written. The Swan Theme depicts the magic and mystery of the lake, with the oboe (solo horn in this version) playing the famous melody, which returns in various guises throughout the ballet. Tchaikovsky's symphonic approach to ballet music was called "undanceable" by some critics after its premiere, but the score to Swan Lake has now become considered as the epitome of ballet music. £59.03The Glory of Colour (Brass Band) Ivan G. Andrews
This work by Ivan Andrews was inspired by the large Baptistry window of the new Coventry Cathedral and will be suitable both as a contest or concert work. The window was conceIved and designed by Basil Spence and was intended to be a worldwide experience. When installed it was claimed to be "the single largest window in stained glass that hitherto had ever been contemplated and brought into existance." The stained glass design was done by artist John Piper and when completed was described by Bishop Bardsley as a "triumphant expression of faith, a faith encapsulated in the 'glory of colour'".* Hence the title for the piece. The composer writes: 'When thinking of this music the traditional tune now often called Monks Gate kept coming to me. The words often sung to this tune were penned by John Bunyan and each stansa ends with the words "To be a pilgrim". The Cathedral in Coventry, although a Christian Church, is designed to bring all faiths together in Unity - there is a "Unity Chapel" opposite the Baptistry window so the concept of pilgrimage seemed perfectly apt to me. The music is therefore designed to reflect many colours as there are many expressions of faith. Single fragments of the Monks Gate tune are used as a basis for what might be deemed 'variations'. The tune is heard in full towards the end of the piece and then the music rises to a climax of bright brilliant white light. The colours of the window are darker on the outer edges but they all circulate towards the brilliant white at the centre - representing the source of all faith.' £33.20The Hewer's Prayer (Brass Band) Steve Gibson
This music was inspired by stories of those working in the dark and dangerous conditions of the coal mines, and particularly those hewers right at the coal face. Based around an original theme, the music captures a hymn-like setting of a miner's prayer for safety. Depictions of industry and difficult times follow, but resolve into a triumphant conclusion where dark imagery give way to light. The music is the composer's proud tribute to the industrial heritage of his forebears. Rooted in the sacred stillness of a French village on Christmas Eve, this suite by Martin Cordner draws upon traditional carols that have echoed through centuries of candlelit chapels and midnight vigils. Each movement offers a window into the Nativity story: I. Mystery: Noel Nouvelet (Christmas Comes Anew) opens with modal wonder, evoking the anticipation of Christ's coming and the quiet awe of Advent. II. Cradle: Entre le boeuf et l'ane gris (Between the Ox and the Grey Donkey) rests in pastoral tenderness, where the newborn Savior lies between humble beasts, watched over by angels and the Virgin. III. Joy: Il est ne, le divin enfant (He is born, the Divine Infant) bursts forth in celebration, proclaiming the divine birth with rustic dance and jubilant praise. Together, these carols form a musical triptych - moving from mystery to intimacy to exultation. Three Carols at Midnight invites listeners to step into the hush of a French Noel, where the sacred story is told not only in word, but in melody, memory, and light. Three for Christmas! is a sparky number by the revered composer Kenneth Downie based on three much-loved carols. The work opens with a bright and joyful rendition of the Sussex Carol, which is quickly followed by a more reflective and tender setting of Away in a Manger, featuring solo cornet, flugel and trombone. The third movement is a lively and upbeat version of Iris, which brings the piece to a triumphant conclusion. The composer writes: 'One of my all time favourite films is Clue (1985) based on the board game of the same name (Cluedo, if you're from the UK). Clue follows the night of six guests who are invited to a mansion for dinner. The host, Mr. Boddy is murdered, and the guests must work together to find the killer before any more lives are lost. I implore you to give it a watch if you haven't already, even if it's just for Tim Curry's magical performance as The Butler. Running at 82 minutes, the film is over before you know it. I wanted to create a similar story here with Whodunnit?, which like it's inspiration, Clue, moves at an incredible pace as it follows a dinner party, to which our guests have been invited. This work is rather dark throughout and full of intentional cliches, for which, I make no apology!' Symphony No 1 for Wind Band - Solitude Standing - Stig Nordhagen
The two movements in this symphony have quite similar structure and length, and this is no coincidence.As a composer, I try to create two musical stories that comes from the same starting point and thought, but they sound and feel different.Music often describes something you cant say in words.
