Christmas Turkey Bones - Various - Lennox Rhodes
Think about Christmas; think about carols; think about turkey with all the trimmings and you have it! Featuring the trombones of the band in a jolly hoe-down setting, you will recognise some favourite Christmas carols; Ding Dong Merrily on High, The First Nowell, I Saw 3 Ships, Adeste Fideles and Deck The Halls. So it only remains for you to "pick the 'bones out of that" and make a wish!

Based on the well-known tune of 'Hickory Dickory Dock', which as kids we all knew, the mice get up to their usual adventures. Frenetic activity is followed by staggering exhaustion, or perhaps they got at the booze...Then the party really gets going, with references to various dance themes (and the behaviour of the visually impaired trio), even taking in the baroque and a stately minuet. Exhausted!

Rather than a conventional set of variations, the work unfolds as a sequence of contrasting diversions, each reimagining aspects of the melody's character, harmony, and rhythmic potential. The opening establishes the noble and timeless quality of Sine Nomine before leading into episodes that explore a wide expressive range - from reflective and lyrical writing to passages of rhythmic energy and grandeur. Fragments of the hymn are continually transformed and re-contextualised, allowing the music to progress with clarity and purpose while maintaining a strong sense of structural coherence. Scored specifically with 3rd and 4th Section bands in mind, the work combines musical substance with practical playability. Idiomatic brass writing, transparent textures, and effective use of traditional band colours ensure musical impact without excessive technical demand. The final section brings the work to a broad and affirmative conclusion, reaffirming the dignity and enduring strength of Vaughan Williams' original melody. VIEW SCORE PDF This trumpet solo was written by Nick Simmons-Smith at the request of Dallas Brass Band for a Christmas concert featuring Elmer Churampi, international trumpet soloist. The solo features three Christmas songs: i. Mi Burrito Sabanero voy camino de Belen (With my donkey of the Savannah, I'm going to Bethlehem) ii. Noche de paz (Silent night) iii. Campana Sobre Campana (Bell above bells, O bells of Bethlehem) These songs are all very popular in Central and South America - including Peru, where Elmer Churampi is originally from. Each tune has been given a different Latin treatment producing a fast-slow-fast festive concert solo. The solo is not long, but each movement could be played individually.
