The Sultry Swan - Dan Price

Brass Band Solo Series - Grade 4 (Soloist 5) A virtuosic cornet solo by Dan Price The Sultry Swan is a slow melody for cornet and brass band and has two clearly defined musical ideas in its construction. The introduction and first theme are lyrical in texture and evoke images of the river bank, the water gently ebbing to and fro whilst the swan glides gracefully across its glassy surface. Although there are no other birds as elegant as the swan in water there are also none as comical out of it, and in contrast to the first theme the second theme reflects the natural 'waddle' of the swan when it is on dry land. A laid back solo for a lazy Sunday afternoon. Featured on Tom Hutchinsons debut CD In Principle Duration: 00:04:50

Fanfares And Love Songs (Score) (Brass Band/Score)

was commissioned by the for performance on 25th July 2009. Its three movements contrast the extrovert and lyrical qualities of the traditional brass band. The fanfare with which the work opens involves the whole cornet section. The second movement is reflective in mood, beginning somewhat pensively on muted brass, and building to an emotional climax before subsiding back to a distant pianissimo chord. The finale is a fast dance, which with a final recapitulation of the opening fanfare drives on to a breathless close.Brass Band Grade 4: Advanced Youth and 3rd Section

    Elegy

A piece for brass band featuring the soprano cornet. Slow and solemn, yet dignified and graceful, this allows the soloist to shine in front of the whole brass band. The band stays in the background for just about the whole piece, coming slightly to the fore in the more turbulent middle section. Lasting 4'30" a nice change of pace for a concert.

Cambridgeshire Impressions - Rieks van der Velde

In a four-part composition Rieks van der Velde takes us to the richly varied area surrounding the university city of Cambridge. The Dutch composer was especially inspired by the atmosphere of Cambridgeshire, the county which lies north of London. 1. The Journey. Although on arrival the area looks peaceful and friendly, the ruggedness of its inhabitants and landscape have an unmistakable influence on the music. In the course of the tour, which starts with an Allegro movement, we are shown the vitality, energy and freshness of the Cambridgeshire countryside. Short themes, swift and sudden motifs and rhythmical patterns supported by the drive of percussion instruments give expression to this image. The first part is concluded by two Calmo movements in which the music expresses how the cathedral in the city of Ely comes into sight and is gradually approached. 2. Visit to Ely Cathedral. The famous Norman cathedral church of Ely, which was built in 1109, has attracted tourists from all over the world apart from being a place of worship and heritage site. A cornet solo introduces the contemplative mood of the composition at this point. The mystical atmosphere of the cathedral runs through this lyrical part like a continuous thread. 3. The Pub. The thirst caused by this intensive journey makes a visit to the local pub a definite must. These "public houses", which may be open until the early hours of the morning, offer all kinds of entertainment. Drinks are served liberally and the atmosphere is lively. 4. The Journey Back. Time has flown: In other words, the moment of departure has come sooner than one would have wished. In a flashback which recaptures elements of the first part of the composition we say goodbye to Cambridgeshire in a fitting manner. Two scintillating final measures bring us abruptly back to the present.

A Carol Fantasy | Chris Ellis

An interesting and unusual take on a lesser known Christmas piece.'I have played many music selections in my time featuring Christmas music, but the funny thing is they all seem to use the same tunes! Jingle Bells, Rudolph.... but I didn't want to produce another of those! An interesting thought ??" all Christmas selections seem to be in 4 beats in a bar and Major keys, all bright and festive. Why not try something different?Carol Fantasy uses 3 beats in a bar, and is written in a Minor key! Some of the classics are there, We Three Kings, Coventry Carol, and We Wish you a Merry Christmas, but they are all stitched together using the lesser known Bell Carol. This could well be the only Christmas selection with a Jazz waltz feel!ChrisEnjoy a different, refreshing and enjoyable slant on Christmas music!InstrumentationSoprano CornetSolo, Repiano, 2nd and 3rd CornetsFlugelhornSolo, 1st and 2nd Tenor Horns1st and 2nd BaritonesEuphonium1st, 2nd and Bass TromboneEb and Bb BassTimpaniDrum KitXylophoneISMN: 979-0-708127-40-6

    Poppyfields | Kevin Bell

It is 4.15am on 8th August 1918, and a British soldier waits for the whistle which will send him 'over the top' and into battle. Beginning with the Battle, entering a dream-like section as our hero advances forwards, followed by random skirmishes, before Battle ends and we enter a lyrical reflective section where the soldiers thoughts turn to home. Finally a lone cornet heralds a tribute to the Fallen, and answered by the euphonium, calls for hope for a new dawn and a better world. There is an optional narration from our soldierbefore the piece starts, and alsohis reflections of war and home after the battle is over, however the piece is written to be played with or without narration. This piece by Kevin Bell has it all: excitement, surprise, reflection and hope.
