Believe Me If All Those Endearing Young Charms - Simone Mantia - David Childs

"Believe Me, if All Those Endearing Young Charms" is a popular folk song of early 19th century Ireland and America. However, Simone Mantia, a pioneer of American euphonium music, composed this theme and variations on the melody in the early 20th century and it remains a staple of the solo euphonium repertoire today.Mantia was born in Palermo Sicily in 1873, but immigrated to the United States at the age of 17. He was the first master of euphonium to work in the era of recorded sound and as a result, left a legacy as euphonium soloist on several Sousa and Pryor band recordings. His Believe Me if All those Endearing Young Charms in one such track from that Legacy. An arrangement for euphonium and brass band was later made by Stanley Boddington, but here we have a 21st century arrangement by one of today's euphonium stars, David Childs.

The Clock with the Dresden Figures (Percussion) - Ketelby, AlbertArranger:

Howard Snell has arranged this delicious number by Albert Ketelby for three percussionists. It is the kind of seaside bandstand music that still delights listeners in the 21st century. Musically very skilled, Ketelby and other stalwarts like Percy Fletcher, Eric Coates, and later, Gilbert Vinter, turned out enormous quantities of high quality 'light' music" principally in the first half of the 20th century.

    Ave Maria

Schubert composed Ave Maria in 1825, and in this modern setting for brass band, the tune is realised in grand and epic proportions. Opening as a flugel solo, with accompanying chords and an absolutely delicious rolling descending scale pattern on muted cornets, your audience has no idea this arrangement of Ave Maria is about to be given some kick into the 21st Century.Slightly cinematic, but always musical, Schubert's classic melody is fit for bands with a big broad sound, and a soprano player who is ready for action.

The 24th Day - James McFadyen

This special arrangement of the popular hymn Ellacombe has been written as a homage to the demotion of Pluto as one of the major planets of the solar system, a decision taken by the International Astronomical Union on 24th August 2006.Pluto was discovered in 1930 by Clyde Tombaugh (1906-1997) at the Lowell Observatory and was named by Venetia Burney (1918-2009), an 11-year-old from Oxford, England. The demotion of Pluto as a Kuiper Belt object left the public polarised, and although most have come to terms with the decision, there are people still attached to Pluto as one of the main planets of the solar system. Scientists agree that if Pluto was discovered today in the 21st Century, it would not be classified as a planet, but instead its rightly place in the Kuiper Belt. The Kuiper Belt is the region of the solar system which lies just beyond the major 8 planets of the solar system. The Kuiper Belt is occupied with many bodies similar to Pluto, such as Ceres, Eris, Haumea and others.

    Euphonium Concerto - Karl Jenkins

This work was commissioned by David Childs who gave the first performance with the BBC Concert Orchestra at the Last Night of the Welsh Proms in 2009. 25 minutes in duration, the concerto is in four movements rather than three, loosely following the 'head-heart-feet-whole body' format of (humanist) symphonic design. Jenkins has stated, 'As is my wont, I've endeavoured to make the concerto somewhat quirky and "off the wall".'It is a work overridingly designed to connect with the listener, arguably Jenkins' greatest gift and a task it achieves with considerable aplomb. The individual movements also stand alone equally well when presented as individual solo items. This version, with brass band accompaniment, is a fantastic addition to the repertoire for any serious 21st century euphonium player!

WAR CRY (Brass Band Set) - Dorothy Gates

This work was written as the opener for the New York Staff Band's 125th anniversary concert in Carnegie Hall in March 2012. Based on the song, 'Ever is the war cry'. the music is quite militant in nature which is a direct reflection of the text. While the composer pays homage to the past in this fitting salute, the overall musical style is decidedly that of the 21st century.
