Battle of Britain - Ron Goodwin - Gavin Somerset

From the 1969 motion picture comes the overture from the epic war film, The Battle of Britain. The film tells the story of the summer 1940 where the British RAF, outnumbered, yet with radar on their side, strategically defeated the Luftwaffe. Unusually for a film, this picture had two scores composed, one by Sir William Walton and the other by Ron Goodwin. Following a decision made by those in charge at United Artists, only one segment of Walton's score was used to feature during the epic air battle scene. The remainder of the film's music fell to Ron Goodwin's who gave us the now famous title "Aces High" and the main theme. This is a perfect addition to any band programme and one that audiences are sure to enjoy. To download the Solo Cornet part, please CLICK HERE . To download the Solo Horn part, please CLICK HERE . SYMPHONIC DANCE No.3 (Brass Band) - Rachmaninoff, Sergei - Littlemore, Phillip

Completed in 1940, the set ofSymphonic Danceswas Sergei Rachmaninov's last composition. The work is fully representative of the composer's late style with its curious, shifting harmonies, the almost Prokofiev-like grotesquerie of the outer movements and the focus on individual instrumental tone colours throughout.Rachmaninov composed the Symphonic Dances four years after his Third Symphony, mostly at the Honeyman Estate, 'Orchard Point', in Centerport, New York, overlooking Long Island Sound. The three-movement work's original name was Fantastic Dances, with movement titles of 'Noon', 'Twilight' and 'Midnight'. When the composer wrote to the conductor Eugene Ormandy in late August, he said that the piece was finished and needed only to be orchestrated, but the manuscript for the full score actually bears completion dates of September and October 1940. It was premiered by Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra, to whom it is dedicated, on 3rd January, 1941. This arrangement is of the last dance and is a kind of struggle between theDies Iraetheme, representing Death, and a quotation from Rachmaninov's ownVespers(also known as the All-night Vigil, 1915), representing Resurrection. The Resurrection theme proves victorious in the end as the composer actually wrote the word 'Hallelujah' at the relevant place the score (one bar after Fig. 16 in this arrangement).Duration: 3:45

    Broadway Boogie - Dave Collins

Broadway Boogie was commissioned by Leigh Baker and was premiered by the Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Brass Band as part of their 2014 Brass in Concert programme at the Sage, Gateshead. The work is inspired by Piet Mondriaan's Broadway Boogie-Woogie, which was his last fully completed picture. Mondriaan arrived in New York in 1940, one of the many European artists who moved to the United States to escape World War II. He fell in love with the city immediately, as well as Boogie-Woogie music - to which he was introduced on his first evening in New York.Broadway Boogie is an exciting, dynamic work that is directly influenced by the work of Piet Mondriaan. The atomized bands of stuttering chromatic pulses, interrupted by light grey, create paths through the work suggesting the city's grid, the movement of traffic, and blinking electric lights - as well as the rhythm of jazz.

    Peacemakers - Dan Price

Peacemakers was composed for Robert Childs and the Grimethorpe Colliery Band. It received its world premiere on November 17th 2014 at The Sage and concluded their winning ‘Brass in Concert' program, ‘Lest We Forget'.As well as commemorating the centenary of World War I, 2014 also marked the 75th Anniversary of the outbreak of Word War II. Dan Price's Peacemakers pays tribute to those who fought, and uses two contrasting musical ideas as its basis. The motifs and material for the first theme take inspiration from Morse code patterns, and as the work nears a triumphant close the allied forces of World War II are remembered through the words of British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill broadcast on 20th August 1940. This speech can be narrated. Alternatively, a free audio download is available from the downloads section of this site.Peacemakers has been recorded by Grimethorpe Colliery Band on their CD 'Grimethorpe Entertain' available to buy here.

SORCERER'S APPRENTICE, The (Brass Band) - Dukas, Paul - Littlemore, Phillip

French composer Paul Dukas wrote his symphonic poem, The Sorcerer's Apprentice, between 1896 and 1897. Subtitled 'Scherzo after a ballad by Goethe', the piece was inspired by Goethe's 1797 poem of the same name. By far the most performed and recorded of Dukas' works, perhaps it's most notable appearance was in the Walt Disney animated film Fantasia from 1940, which led to the piece becoming widely known to audiences outside the classical concert hall.. The original orchestral work is some 10 minutes in length, however this brass band transcription has been abridged to create a more manageable 6-minute work, yet retains the urgency, magic and colour of the original.
