Commissioned in 2013 by the National Children's Band of Great Britain for their 10th Anniversary, Blue Thunder takes inspiration from the fast and noisy world of steam locomotives. The Mallard 4468 is a LNER Pacific steam locomotive and was famous for setting the world land speed record (126mph). Blue Thunder (a reference to the train's colour and lightning speed) also marks the 75th anniversary of this world record. The music imitates the sounds and excitement of a steam train on its journey, with added choreography to add some visual excitement. Listen: Duration: 00:04:45 Grade 3.5

Commissioned by Philip Harper for the Cory Bands 2013 tour to Australia, Dreamtime draws inspiration from Australian Aboriginal mythology. The Dreamtime is a sacred era in which the Aborigines believe ancestral totemic (symbolic) spirits created the world. The work is heavily percussive, including narration and a pseudo-didgeridoo, created with multi-phonics in euphoniums and tubas. This light-hearted work uses the melodies of traditional nursery rhymes that have an association with London; Oranges and Lemons, The Muffin Man, Pop Goes the Weasel, Humpty Dumpty and Mary Mary Quite Contrary . Each setting of the rhyme depicts a famous landmark from the capital; Big Ben, the Thames, the Underground, Buckingham Palace, Horse Guards Parade and the Tower of London. £25.00The Garland Waltz (Tchaikovsky arr. Dan Price)
The Garland Waltz comes from 'The Sleeping Beauty', the second of three ballets by Pyotr Tchaikovsky. Sleeping Beauty's theme is simplistic and focuses on the conflicting forces of good and evil through the characters the Lilac Fairy (good) and Carabosse (evil). The ballet's premiere in 1890 received more favourable accolades than 'Swan Lake' but Tchaikovsky never witnessed the work's true success outside of Russia as he died in 1893. By 1903, 'The Sleeping Beauty' was the second most popular ballet in the repertoire of the Imperial Ballet, having been performed 200 times in only 10 years. The waltz and other music from the ballet has been used extensively in film and television, most notably in Disney's animated version of 'Sleeping Beauty' and the recently released 'Maleficent'. Commissioned by Mark Peacock for the Longridge Band , this reflective setting by Dan Price evokes the rolling Lancashire countryside, with subtle hints of industrialisation, mill machinery and the echoes of the song's musical hall origins. Originally conceived as a trombone duet for the graduation recital of Andy Brooks at Western University, this setting of Matt Merker's popular choral work has been adapted by Noel Brooks as a featured work for trombone trio with brass band. The arrangement follows the emotional arc of the hymn's lyrics, utilising the brass band's colours to reflect the themes of each verse. The journey begins with a sense of vulnerability; the accompaniment is kept sparse and cold to echo the text's plea regarding a failing faith. In the second verse, the music transitions into a more encouraging and uplifted atmosphere, reflecting the assurance of being "precious in His Holy sight." A shift occurs in the third verse, which takes on a darker, more reflective character to support the gravity of the lyrics. This contemplative section builds steadily toward the final chorus, where a sense of confidence returns. The work culminates in a strong musical statement of the hymn's central promise: "He will hold me fast."
