This work for trumpet or cornet was written by Kenneth Downie for Jamie Hood's solo CD, Crossroads. Dr. Ronald Holz writes: 'Kenneth Downie's Rondo contrasts a sunny, ebullient main theme with both a more relaxed secondary theme and a slower, middle section. That reflective middle returns towards the end of the work in a lovely musical dialogue in which the rondo theme has the final, happy declaration. Again, the performers' facile delivery belies the demanding nature of the composition, one that I am sure will prove popular on any trumpeter's solo concerts.' Beyond the Cross - Edward GregsonThis meditation for cornet and piano is based on a song that is both simple and reflective in its mood and structure. Accordingly, the manner of performance should be one of simplicity, without any hint of excessive rubato or additional expressive means, the expression is in the music itself!However, the solo part is neither simple (in the technical sense) nor without musical challenge. Beauty of tone should be aimed for, but again not through excessive vibrato or other manufactured devices. Control of phrasing and line is important and in this regards the soloist should imagine that the melody is in one long phrase.Written at the request of David Daws, for his solo album, The Sound of David Daws, this meditation uses the composer's own song, Before the Cross (The Musical Salvationist, April 1965), the first lines of which are: ‘Before the cross I stand in fear and wonder, and see that all my sins on thee are laid’ (text by Peter Cooke). This song was penned at an early stage of the composer's career, just before he commenced studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Don't Doubt Him Now - Leonard Ballantine arr. Craig Woodland trs. Derick KaneThe song Don't Doubt Him Now by Major Leonard Ballantine, originally written for female voices, was published in The Musical Salvationist in July 1990. This arrangement comes from Craig Woodland of the London Citadel Corps in Ontario, Canada.

This famous aria is from the opera Gianni Schicchi. Lauretta, daughter of Gianni Schicchi, has fallen in love with Rinuccio but there are huge tensions between their two families which threaten to keep the young couple apart. The rather discordant music which opens portrays these tensions before giving way to Lauretta's tender appeal to her father to allow her to marry the man she loves. A brass band arrangement of this aria was prepared at the request of Brett Baker to be performed with Brass Band Of The Western Reserve, musical director Dr Keith M Wilkinson, during his visit in May, 2011. This piano accompaniment version will make this beautiful music accessible to more soloists.Solo parts for Eb Horn and F Horn are included.
