MOTONDO (Brass Band Set) - Donald Osgood
This march commemorated the International Scouts 'Motondo' held in Holland in 1952. Motondo is an African word meaning 'a gathering for giving thanks'. A favourite chorus from the event is used in the trio section, 'Travel along in the sunshine, on the King's highway'. Unusually for 'general use' marches, Motondo has an alternative 'concert' ending which can be used if the Da Capo is not employed.

DAYSTAR (Brass Band Set) - Ray Steadman-Allen
The title of this work is taken from 2 Peter 1:19 which refers to the word of prophecy about 'the light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts'. The beautiful hymn tune Ascalon is the main focal point while the composer also makes use of the less well-known melody My Saviour suffered on the tree.

ISAIAH 40 (Brass Band Set) - Robert Redhead
Commissioned for the final of the 1996 National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain. The timeless truths contained in Isaiah 40 were written to encourage a people facing very intimidating circumstances. The Jewish people of the 5th Century BC were preparing to make an arduous journey though the desert to return to their ravaged homeland after a lengthy exile in the sophisticated society of Babylon. Both Scripture and music sound out a message of hope, as they view life from an eternal perspective, thus placing change in its proper context. Because 'the Lord is the everlasting God' his word 'stands forever' and 'those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength'. They will not merely get through somehow but 'they will soar on wings like eagles'.

HAPPY DAY, A (Cornet Solo with Brass Band Set) - Erik Leidzen
This composition was awarded first prize in the Theme and Variations Section of the 1926 Salvation Army Band Music Competition and has remained popular with cornet soloists and audiences ever since. This was the first in a trilogy of cornet solos with the word 'day' in the title written by Erik Leidzen, the others being 'Happy all the Day' and 'Wondrous Day'.

This piece embraces the sounds and imagery of a tribal group out singing on a remote hill top, where individuals sing out a 2 bar phrase and the remainder of their group sing a response. African Dawn brings this vision to life by giving the opportunity for the musicians playing the original "Chant" or "Call" to be positioned as soloists, or just stand up within the main group.There is also the opportunity for lots of percussion to be spread throughout the band and divided into groups, or even groups of people clapping the separate rhythms to bring forth the African atmosphere.African Dawn is part of the Flexi-Collection - World Tour Series.Our Flexi-Collection Series:Flexible scoring tailored to your needs - a perfect solution for expanding the repertoire of Junior/Youth brass bands and ensembles. Programme Notes from Andrew Duncan:Like many of the arrangements in the Flexi-Collection - Popular Classics Series I have simplified the rhythms and time signature, etc. I have also omitted trills for ease of playing.Dynamics form a very important aspect of this arrangement and it is important to observe these, especially the p markings. Every dynamic from p through to ff is used as well as some crescendos.The 1st Cornet/Trumpet part is perhaps more difficult than in some of the other arrangements in the series, but the other parts are fairly simple in comparison.The Percussion part (which is optional) is unusual in that it calls for two 'Anvils' to be played. Programme Notes by Andrew Duncan:This arrangement is fairly simple and the strong melodic and rhythmic lines should help introduce inexperienced players to the concept of playing in 3 time. The triplets in the 3rd cornet/trumpet part and the 1st Baritone/Euphonium/Trombone part (and in the tambourine part) are played in unison and will greatly help to move the rhythm forward.The tune is in the 1st cornet/trumpet part up until letter B when it is played by the horns (in unison) and in harmony by the 1st Baritone/Euphonium/Trombone part, so there is plenty for all to play throughout the piece.The Percussion part is written for a Tambourine, and although it is optional, it would add colour to a performance of the arrangement.The Flexi-Collection ApproachFlexible scoring tailored to your needs - A perfect solution for expanding the repertoire of training and junior brass bands. An original composition for massed brass bands and brass quintet devised by John Wallace, Tony George and Svend McEwan-Brown. A cross-genre production work, including scene setting, lighting and the spoken word reciting associated poems, De Profundis was given its world premiere at the East Neuk Festival on 1 July 2017 at The Bowhouse, performed by The Wallace Collection, Tullis Russell Mills Band and friends.If you would like to perform this work, The Wallace Collection are able to provide production consultancy and supply the brass quintet elements of the production - if you would like to discuss potential performances, please contact them direct on [email protected] NotesDe Profundis is a large scale brass band performance piece created by John Wallace and Tony George, based upon an original idea by Svend McEwan-Brown. It was developed in sessions with members of the Tullis Russell Mills Band, commissioned and premiered at East Neuk Festival 2017 at The Bowhouse, St Monans, on 1st July 2017.It was supported by Creative Scotland, Fife Council, Toby and Kate Anstruther, Shields and Carol Henderson, Donald and Louise MacDonald.This project remembers and celebrates the lives and music of miners.
