The 7 African Romances, Op. 17 for voice and piano has words by Paul Laurence Dunbar and music by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. Published in 1897, it comprises of 7 songs, "An African Love Song", "A Prayer", "A Starry Night", "Dawn", "Ballad", "Over the Hills" and "How Shall I Woo Thee?", of which the last is arranged here.This arrangement was requested by Besses o' th' Barn Band for the The Samuel Coleridge-Taylor Festival held in Liverpool on 11 October 2025. The song is wonderfully lilting with moments to indulge in the music.This arrangement is for the UK-style brass band and either solo B-flat cornet, solo E-flat soprano cornet or soprano singer. It also has alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. This piece was written as a full length virtuosic solo based on an earlier work called Humble Hero, which is also available from BrookWright Music. It is an extension of that work and still dedicated to Ken Bradley, designed to provide a reflection of his technical skills and a platform to emulate musicianship for which he was renowned. Ken Bradley (1962 - 2022) was one of Australia's best-known, well-loved, and talented brass musicians. The solo is also available from this website with piano accompaniment. BEFORE THE CROSS (Cornet Solo with Brass Band Set) - Edward Gregson
Written at the request of David Daws for his solo album The Sound of David Daws, this meditation for cornet and brass band uses the composer's own song Before the cross (originally published in The Musical Salvationist, April 1965), the first lines of which are Before the cross I stand in fear and wonder, and see that all my sirs on Thee are laid. The song was written at an early stage of the composer's career, just before commencing study at The Royal Academy of Music, London. After a brief introduction the melody is heard twice, first played by the soloist, then on Euphonium and Flugel Horn with the soloist adding ornate counterpoint before taking up the melody once again, this time leading to a quiet and reflective conclusion.

Song of India (or more accurately the 'Song of the Hindu'), from Rimsky-Korsakov's opera-bilina Sadko, provides a technical challenge as well as a musical one, requiring a great degree of control and accurate intonation as the subtly varied chromatic phrases weave their way over a gently undulating, almost hypnotic accompaniment. The Piano Accompaniment verion has been set for Trinity College music exams for 2019-22 (Grade 5), so this brass band version is the ideal opportunity to give young soloists experience with their band.
