Jacob de Haan wrote this arrangement for concert band, fanfare band and brass band and optional male voice choir. The original carol was written by the Austrian composer and organist Franz Gruber (1787-1863). He was asked to write Silent Night) on the 24th of December 1818 by the priest of the Church of St. Nicolas in Oberndorf, who had himself written the text. It is a romantic carol, with nuances of contemporary Austrian folk and Italian pastorale music.Duration: 4:45

The Haunter of the Dark is based on a tale by the author Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890-1937) about a deserted church, where according to an old legend a monster had been lying low for years. A scientist who studies ancient religions visits this church. Besides some ancient writings he discovers a box, which contains a luminous stone. Every time the stone sheds its light, the scientist experiences all sorts of weird visions. The church in the tale actually exists, and can be found in Providence (USA). Rondeau of the Shepherds is the historical title associated with the well'known Dutch Christmas carol "Midden in de winternacht." The modern Dutch text was written in 1948 by the poet and writer Harry Prenen. The melody, however, has a much older heritage. It appears in the works of 17th' and 18th'century French organ composers such as Louis-Claude Daquin, Claude Balbastre, and Jean-Franois Dandrieu, who often included it in their Christmas suites and nols.The tune itself is believed to originate from a late'medieval Spanish (likely Catalan) Christmas song, traditionally identified as "El Desembre Congelat." Al Sharq (pronounced al-sha-rak) was commissioned by Tredegar Town Band as part of their programme for the 2014 Brass in Concert Championships at the Sage, Gateshead.The piece is an exciting and exotic concert work for brass band, which is heavily influenced by the genres 'Third Stream' and 'Arabic'. The composition is highly rhythmical and percussion heavy, which makes use of 'Tam-tam vibrato' - a technique which was invented by the composer especially for this composition.There are plenty of opportunities for the musicians to try something different, such as the aleatoric harmonic framework at the opening of the composition, shouting, 'hi-fiving', special choreography and even playing a didgeridoo!Al Sharq is a technically demanding piece which exploits the talents of all sections of the ensemble, especially the principal solo cornet, who starts the piece with an atmospheric cadenza.
