The Raft of the Medusa is a painting by Theodore Gericault and hangs in the Louvre, Paris. It depicts the true story of a shipwreck and of a hastily constructed raft upon which at least 157 people were cast adrift for 13 days and endured starvation, dehydration, cannibalism and madness. The work is a diabolical duel between cornet and trombone, a violent tone poem showing off the techniques of the soloists. There is no light in this piece, no triumph, only sadness. Duration: 6.00. The March to the Scaffold is the fourth of five movements from Hector Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique. The symphony tells the story of a troubled young man and his quest to find his true love. This true love is depicted in the music by a melody known as a idee fixe (fixed idea) and appears in every movement.The fourth movement takes on a nightmarish character as having taken opium, the young man dreams that he has killed his true love and is about to be executed for his crime. The music is an unrelenting forced march to the scaffold. The idee fixe appears only once in this movement, as a sudden reminiscence just before the guillotine strikes the young man's head before the movement comes to an end with a perversely joyous conclusion.Duration: 4'30"Difficulty: 3rd Section and above

This three-movement work by the Swiss composer Etienne Crausaz reflects three true stories and fascinating legends from the Middle Ages. The first movement tells the dramatic story of the 'witch' Catherine 'Catillon' Repond (1662 1731). She was the last woman ever to be executed for sorcery. In the second movement, the famous court jester Girard Chalamala occupies centre stage. This jester, the last one at the castle of Count Greyerz, could make everyone laugh. The third movement tells the story of Count Michael. He went down in history as a spendthrift bon-vivant. His burden of debt became so high that he did a moonlight flit and never came back!
