Philip Sparke wrote Heritage as a grand concert march in the tradition of Elgar and Walton. After a brief introduction, the march's long main theme is presented: first in subdued tones, then taken up by the full band, adding a tenor counter melody. The following bridge passage leads to a change of key and the traditional trio section. A repeat of previous motifs leads to a return of the main theme, followed by a short closing coda.Duration: 4.45

This arrangement was made after hearing Astor Piazzolla s 1986 recording of his own work written in 1965. The original instrumentation of bandoneon, violin and string bass is here arranged for three wind soloists with Concert Band. The Soprano Sax is the main soloist (filling the bandoneon role), while the trombone and clarinet shares the violin part as a kind of flirting undertone to the soprano saxophone. It s not possible to make a 100% correct notation of the solo parts, so it s recommended to listen to the record album Zero Hour from 1986 to get the best impression of the work. While the origins of the tune are unclear, it has a distinct character; from the opening rising fourth interval through to its conclusion, it embodies strength and vigour. The composer has hinted at the style brilliantly employed by the great Australian march writer, Arthur Gullidge, by opting for a minor key in the first section offset by a melodious trio section in a major key.

Just based on its title, this piece has to be celebratory and up-beat, which it is! It opens with a stately fanfare, first played on the low brass before the entire band joins in. This gives way to a contrasting lyrical theme which develops until it joins up with the fanfare to complete the opening section. A lively and heavily syncopated vivo follows, cast as a traditional march, complete with a 'bass strain' and trio. After the original march theme returns, a climax leads back to a reprise of the majestic opening, which brings the piece to an appropriately triumphant close.Duration: 7:30

Wade in the Water is a Negro Spiritual made popular in 1962 by the Ramsey Lewis Trio. Further versions followed in 1968 by Big Mama Thornton and in 1997 by Eva Cassidy. The song is thought to be a coded message for slaves escaping to freedom and tells the fugitive to walk in the water, instead of on the land, where tracking dogs cannot follow human scent. This version for brass band is in swing style.
