Keystone Kops (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Davis, Carl - Littlemore, Phillip

The Keystone Kops was a series of silent comedies featuring an incompetent group of policemen. They first appeared in the 1912 film Hoffmeyer's Legacy but it was the 1913 feature The Bangville Police that confirmed their popularity. The Keystone Kops were renowned for making mistakes, particularly with a great deal of energy and activity, and all done with a major lack of coordination. Carl Davis's 3-minute tour de force is a fine encore piece!Recorded on Polyphonic QPRL218D Master Brass (Volume Fourteen)Duration: 3:00

    Exegesis - Tim Paton

An exciting, original composition for brass band by Tim Paton. A complex work which entwines melodic lyricism amidst contemporary harmonies and scoring. A tour de force of Tim’s creativity and a rewarding challenge for the performers and audience.Tim comments: The term exegesis is applied to a study which works out the meaning of something, an interpretation of a series of events, a comparison of ideas within a given medium, for example, “Biblical exegesis”. This brass band piece is a musical exegesis.Section one is made up of three main themes, and although these themes are tonal within themselves, there is a sense that they are trying to understand one another. From the very beginning of this section, there is an element of bi-tonality and dissonance. The middle section is ponderous, where we hear elements of these three themes. It could be called the ‘thinking section’.Section three almost interrupts this middle section, with fanfares displaying a realisation, still containing bi-tonality, but in harmony! We are soon led in to a hymn like celebration, followed by a determined, militaristic section for the percussion. Finally, the fanfares which opened this third section, reappear, taking us to a final conclusion.

    Quicksilver - Paul Lovatt-Cooper

The piece has been composed to demonstrate the full technical and sonorous capabilities that the E flat tuba has to offer.Quicksilver is divided into three sections: fast-slow-fast.The opening and concluding fast sections have been composed to stretch the performer to the limit and as the title suggests, the soloist needs very quick technical skills in order to successfully negotiate and perform the difficult opening and closing sections. The reflective middle section is a haunting slow melody that demonstrates the beautiful range and colour of the Tuba. With sonorous sounds from the Tuba this middle section fades to a mere whisper towards the end to guide us into the concluding fast section. The recapitulation of the opening follows, this time with transformations as the piece travels to its conclusion. This is a real 'tour de force' for the Tuba and it highlights the Tuba’s technical and sonorous excellence as a soloist instrument. This is an ideal addition to the Tuba soloist repertoire.

    Pageantry - Herbert Howells

Herbert Howells was born in Gloucestershire in 1892 and, as a youngster, wrote and conducted music for bands in the Forest of Dean, where a strong brass banding tradition still exists. In later life, when an established composer, Howells accepted an invitation to write a test-piece for the 1934 British Open Brass Band Championship. Encouraged by that great friend of the brass band movement, Sir Granville Bantock, he responded with Pageantry, a three movement work, which is still a stiff test for bands today. He undertook the task with great conscientiousness, frequently seeking advice from those more associated with the brass band genre such as Henry Geehl and John Henry Iles. The work was very well received by players and public alike, and still remains part of the core repertoire for brass bands. There are three movements and the first, King's Herald, features fanfares and a demanding animated section. The central slow movement, Cortege, is rather solemn and gives opportunity to display the lyrical qualities of brass instruments. Between February and June 1934, Britain lost three very important musical figures; Elgar, Holst and Delius. Howells was a very sensitive man (as the shattering effect on him of the death of his son revealed two years later) and Elgar had been a particular friend and mentor. It is entirely possible therefore that this elegiac music is a kind of memorial to the great composer - it would have been a very typical gesture. Jousts, which ends the work, is a real tour de force for brass and as tough a challenge as anyone could wish.
