KERYGMA (Brass Band Set) - Steven Ponsford
The Greek word 'kerygma' was adopted by the early Christian church as a way of expressing 'the word of God proclaimed'. The composer has taken this concept and used three contemporary worship songs, 'He is Lord', 'Jesus Christ' and 'He has risen', along with fragments of the more traditional 'Easter Hymn', to proclaim in music the Lordship of the risen Christ.

The first two movements of this suite are based on the composer's own songs, a carol 'Welcome, Happy Morning' and 'Begin the Day with God'. The third introduces the tune 'Hark, Hark my Soul' with the line 'Bright day shall dawn and sin's dark night be past' forming the link to the title.

Saints and Devils is a challenging three movement work:Dance with the Devil (4.30)A Glimpse of Paradise (4.45)Reyes Magos (3.45)I wrote it when I was living in Spain where the Catholic culture is still much more prevalent than in the UK. The first two movements are a transition from dark to light; Dance with the Devil is aggressive and occasionally macabre whereas A Glimpse of Paradise is serene.The first and final parts of the second movement were originally written for a sequence in the Royal Military Tattoo 2000, played under the John Magee poem High Flight - 'Oh I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth ............ Put out my hand, and touched the face of God'- with videos of eagle owls in flight dramatically projected onto the buildings of Horse Guards in Whitehall, London.The last movement, Reyes Magos, is the joyous fiesta of the Three Kings. In Spain, January 6th, rather than Christmas Day, is the main day of present-giving, marking the Epiphany, the arrival of the Kings from the Orient at the Nativity. The High Council (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Steadman-Allen, Ray
This march was written at the request of the then Chief of the Staff, Commissioner Arnold Brown for the welcome meeting of the 1974 High Council, a gathering of The Salvation Army's top leaders from around the world who meet to elect a new General. The scintillating music is filled with many wonderful and surprising shifts of key, rhythm and instrumental colour. Evangeline Booth's song 'The world for God' provides the international reference while at the trio's peak, the composer joins three tunes in impressive counterpoint; 'We're the Army' (cornets), 'A Robe of White' (horns and baritones) and 'Bound for Canaan's Shore' (trombones). The march ends with a dazzling shift into triple time and an impressive molto allargando codetta.
