Utopia - Jacob de Haan
Utopia is the name of a book written by the English author Thomas More and was published in 1516. The title is a word thought up by More himself, after the Greek language, meaning "Nowhereland" and leading to the invention of the words utopian scheme and utopian. Utopia pictured an ideal state on an island far from the inhabited world. This idea was the basis of the composition. It makes one think of Oregon in variety of themes and style. Utopia also exists of a combination of styles that breathe the atmosphere of film music. However, Utopia sounds less American. The slow and stirring middle part for example is closer to the European romanticism: the chord signals in the brasssection remind of Wagner's music.

American Dances - Bertrand Moren
This entertaining work highlights the cornet and trombone sections. Several dances of American origin are presented by the soloists, supported by band accompaniment. Following a short introduction a country and western passage takes us to the far West and the home of the cowboys. The second part, a blues section, opens with a terrific trombone cadenza. The final jazz based passage is rather acrobatic in style and ends with a fantastic percussion improvisation.

Wilfred Heaton began to assemble material for 'Beulah Land' in the early 1990s following a request from the Amsterdam Staff Band for a new work. Despite reminding himself on the manuscript that he should either complete or destroy the work before his death, ultimately he did not manage either. This edition was subsequently realised in 2003 for the tour of the USA Western States by the Amsterdam Staff Band.'Beulah Land' is Heaton's vision of the joy that awaits the Christian in Heaven and, according to his family, is reminiscent of the kind of music he often improvised at the piano. The three movements are as follows;1. Better World; a waltz sequence on the tune 'Zealley' to which the words 'There is a better world, they say' are sung.2. Heavenly Home; an elegiac cortege using the tunes 'My home is in Heaven', 'I have a home that is fairer than day' and 'The home over there'.3. DURATION: 3 minutes. DIFFICULTY: 2nd+. 'The Battle of Sherwood Forest' was composed for BD1 Brass as part of a set of music inspired by the fairytale of Robin Hood and Maid Marian. . In this section of the story, we are transported to the infamous Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire where Robin Hood does battle against the evil Sheriff of Nottingham - a crooked and corrupt officer of the law employed by King Richard to tak the poor and provide for the rich. The battle ends in a stalemate, but Maid Marian (an ally of Robin's) is captured during the conflict by the Sheriff's man and escorted far, far away into solitary confinement.

The 'Concerto for Euphonium' with Brass Band is scored in three movements: The Lure of the Red Jacket; Far Beyond the Stars; The Dragon's Den. The Lure of the Red Jacket responds musically to these ideas and attitudes; a non-relenting riff that signifies the hard slog of practice, scorings which find members of the band supporting the soloist, all the time the soloist putting together new riffs and ideas. Stylistically all this happens within a frame of minimalism and funk. Far Beyond the Stars is a simple folk-like melody that is stated by the soloist, which develops with different harmonic backdrops being introduced. The poignant words form the focus of the emotional intensity of this piece. The Dragon's Den is a fierce and fiery fusion of energy, virtuosic playing and intricate ensemble work, the finale of the Concerto for Euphonium draws upon the composers experience of big band and small group performance and writing.
