For the Fallen - Karl Jenkins - Robert Childs

For the Fallen is a setting of Laurence Binyon's famous ode honouring the war dead, familiar from Remembrance Day services, including the lines "At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them".In its original form for soprano voice, choir and orchestra the work received its premiere in the Royal Albert Hall on November 13th 2010 at The Festival of Remembrance, performed by Hayley Westenra, Choirs of Langham and Wimbledon Choral Society and the orchestra of the Coldstream Guards conducted by Lt Col Graham Jones. In this setting for brass band, part of the poem is allotted to narrator, and The Last Post is incorporated into the score; initially featuring antiphonal solo cornets. This arrangement received its premiere in the Sage on November 17th 2014 performed by the Grimethorpe Colliery Band conducted by Robert Childs; it formed part of their winning ‘Brass In Concert' programme entitled ‘Lest We Forget' and can be heard in full on their 'Grimethorpe Entertain' CD release available to buy here. The work is dedicated to the composer's uncle, Alfryn Jenkins, who lost his life as captain of a Lancaster bomber over Berlin in 1944.

    Poppy Fields - David Crowe

It was while looking out upon the twelve-thousand graves at the Tyne Cot memorial, of which over eight-thousand commemorate the lives of unknown soldiers, that the composer felt compelled to compose a piece which encapsulated the feeling of bothpeaceful serenity and great loss that one has when visiting such a place. Throughout the work, images of the 'Last Post' are heard in the distance, as the music reflects upon the catastrophic events which took place in Europe and around the world during the first part of the twentieth-century. Under this hauntingly familiar melody, a simple hymn-like chorale plays and is soon heard overlapped with the opening material in an attempt to unite the feeling of calm and of pain that a place of great remembrance such as Tyne Cot invokes within us all. *note ? the opening Marimba part can be substituted for Xylophone/Vibraphone to create a sustained sound

Music of the Great War is a five year project to use music of the period to educate and engage schools, colleges, town bands, and the wider public across the UK and the world to learn in a positive way about the events, the experience of the troops involved from all sides, and how music played its part. This year, to commemorate the centenary of the Great War a specially arranged medley Songs of the Great War has been created. One of the world`s most popular hymns, this time in an accompanying role to one of the most popular military bugle calls, so bringing the two together to commemorate those who we have lost. The Last Post was originally played at the end of the day as a call for soldiers to retire to their beds. It went on to become a call to remember the departed. Many apologies to my 'regulars' for yet another upload. This is due to Scorch playback problems again. This, my latest update had the solo cornet sounding a gunshot instead of it`s solo G at the 6th to last bar. How ironic can one get!?!
