£36.76Seaside Odyssey (Brass Band) Liz Lane
Seaside Odyssey is a celebration of the British seaside! The music represents a juxtaposition between natural and manmade elements; there are two main musical themes - the reflective sea (a wordless setting of John Masefield's Sea Fever) and a more lively 'seaside' theme, heard separately in different ways and later together. From childhood memories, sand, beach and cliffs to cafes, ice creams, fish and chips, buckets and spades, boating trips, beach huts, bandstands, piers, theatres, gardens, mini golf, arcades and more, Seaside Odyssey is a journey from dawn to dusk with the sea at the heart of the music. This work was commissioned by Grimethorpe Colliery Band for its seaside tour, August 2023, where it performed at Paignton, Lyme Regis, Weymouth, Shanklin and Herne Bay. Includes optional poems and words specially curated from poets associated with the seaside towns, which can be read before a performance. Skidaddle will be the perfect item to provide a lighter moment in your band's programme. The composer Barrie Gott writes: ''Skidaddle' literally means to move in a hurry. This piece means exactly that - to get moving. I was experimenting at the piano at school one morning waiting for my first students and this little ditty came to mind. Four hours later I had the first draft done! It is supposed to be a bit of fun with a few technical demands for cornet and euphonium in particular. The semi-quaver (sixteenth) work needs to be precise. Try and get the audience involved and they'll be yours for the larger works on the programme.' £33.08Swan Theme from 'Swan Lake' (Brass Band) Tchaikovsky arr. Jack Lythaby
Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake is made up of folk tales from Germany and Russia, and tells the story of Odette, a princess turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer's curse. The ballet was premiered on 4th March 1877 by the Bolshoi Ballet company in the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, and despite its initial failure, has become one of the greatest ballets ever written. The Swan Theme depicts the magic and mystery of the lake, with the oboe (solo horn in this version) playing the famous melody, which returns in various guises throughout the ballet. Tchaikovsky's symphonic approach to ballet music was called "undanceable" by some critics after its premiere, but the score to Swan Lake has now become considered as the epitome of ballet music. £33.08Swinging all the way (Brass Band) Dave Collins
Swinging all the way is a jazzy take on the most well known of Christmas tunes, Jingle Bells. We begin in a dark underground jazz club with the rich, luscious harmonies supporting the tune that we all know. But the melody is perhaps secondary to the timbres and dissonances of this darkly elegant ballad punctuated by the solo cornet, a contrast of styles between the joyous melody and sober accompaniment. As the work progresses it becomes more uplifting, with solo features from the trombone, before emerging into the bright lights of a big band set, with stride bass, crunchy punctuating rhythms and screaming trumpets. The arrangement ends where we began, after our exciting sleigh ride comes to an end. This music was inspired by stories of those working in the dark and dangerous conditions of the coal mines, and particularly those hewers right at the coal face. Based around an original theme, the music captures a hymn-like setting of a miner's prayer for safety. Depictions of industry and difficult times follow, but resolve into a triumphant conclusion where dark imagery give way to light. The music is the composer's proud tribute to the industrial heritage of his forebears. Drawing inspiration from the beloved 18th-century hymn Ich bete an die Macht der Liebe (I Pray to the Power of Love), this arrangement transforms a timeless spiritual message into a profound musical experience. The foundation of this work lies in the 1822 melody by Dmitri Bortniansky. Originally set to the poetry of Gerhard Tersteegen, this dignified and contemplative theme has served as a cornerstone of ceremonial music for centuries, symbolising solace, reverence, and the liberating power of divine love. Unbounded Love is an intimate memorial dedicated to Hein Voskamp, a cherished soprano player and close friend of the composer. Born from a simple final request - to hear this hymn one last time - the piece became the composer's way of navigating grief and expressing gratitude when words were no longer enough.
