The soloist will find it helpful to, generally, adopt a very light and playful style. As a young aspiring cornet player, the composer was influenced by a number of soloists of that day, one being Del Staigers of the Goldman Band in the USA. Many of the musical motifs reflect that influence and it is hoped that this solo will, in turn, inspire the many aspiring cornet players of today.

The Lion King, the hugely successful Disney animated film, tells the story of Simba, a young lion trying to escape his past. The film opens with the impressive song Circle of Life which immediately evokes the Disney magic. The music was written by Elton John and the text is by Tim Rice, a successful lyricist in the world of musicals. Rachmaninov composed his First Symphony in 1895, at the age of just 22 years. It received its first performance on March 27, 1897, at a Russian Symphony Society concert in St. Petersburg with Alexander Glazunov conducting. The premiere was not well-received, and Rachmaninov himself blamed Glazunov for a lacklustre approach for beating time rather than finding the music. Some contemporary reports even suggested that Glazunov was inebriated when he took to the stage! Despite the disappointment of the premiere performance, Rachmaninov never destroyed the score but left it behind when he left Russia to settle in the West, eventually it was given up for lost. After the composer's death, a two-piano transcription of the symphony surfaced in Moscow, followed by a set of orchestral parts at the conservatory in Saint Petersburg. In March 1945, the symphony was performed in Moscow for the first time since its 1897 premiere. It was a grand success, and this led to a new and more enthusiastic evaluation of the symphony. In March 1948 it received a similarly successful American premiere and the work proceeded to establish itself in the general repertory. The final movement (Allegro con fuoco) is colourful and grand but not without its darkly contrasting, menacing episodes that intensifies its malevolence. It is a work overflowing with ideas demonstrating a strong, highly individual, and self-assured young talent. Duration: 5:40

Till We Meet Again was commissioned by Floraskulen Brassband, Floro, Norway, as a tribute to their former tuba player, Gunstein Stromsnes, who died tragically young in a traffic accident in 2017. They gave the premiere in December 2018. After a short introduction, a solo euphonium intones a modal, folk-like melody. This is taken up by the flugel horn and leads to a series of short solos which build to a majestic chorale for the full band. The mood subsides to reintroduce the modal melody before hints of the introduction and a short euphonium cadenza bring the work peacefully to a close.Duration: 4.00

The Piano Accompaniment verion has been set for Trinity College music exams for 2019-22 (Grade 5), so this brass band version is the ideal opportunity to give young soloists experience with their band.
