    THE GREAT RACE (Finale from In League with Extraordinary Gentlemen) - Peter Graham

    The Great Race, for solo euphonium and band, follows Phileas Fogg on the last stage of his epic journey Around the World in Eighty Days (from the novel by Jules Verne). The moto perpetuo nature of the music gives full rein to the soloists technical virtuosity. As the work draws to a conclusion, the frantic scramble by Fogg to meet his deadline at the Reform Club in Pall Mall, London, is echoed by the soloists increasingly demanding ascending figuration, set against the background of Big Ben clock chimes.Available MultiMedia Files

    The Cistercians

    DescriptionThe Cistercianswas written during December 2003 and January 2004 as an entry for Morecambe Band's Centenary New Music Competition, which it went on to win. The first two performances were at the final of this competition, part of the band's 100th Anniversary Concert at The Dome in Morecambe on 9 July 2004.The music was inspired by visits to three of Britain's great Cistercian Abbeys; Valle Crucis, Fountains and Rievaulx. The Cistercian Order was founded at Citeaux in France in the 11th Century and was based on the principles of austerity, humility and piety. Cistercian Abbeys were deliberately sited in remote, difficult areas. Despite this many of them, especially Rievaulx, became immense centres of commerce and power, with ever more complex administration and hierarchies.In a way the music reflects this; all the material in the piece is derived from two simple motifs played by flugel and solo horn in the opening bars and becomes more complex and further removed from the original material as the piece develops. After a tranquil opening section a fugal chorale develops over a medieval-style "tenor" - a stretched out version of one of the original motifs. A burst of semiquavers leads into a faster, folk-dance type section - our medieval abbey has become a bustling trade centre - before rhythmic quaver pulses in the horns and cornets accompany powerful chords in the low brass; this is another "tenor" derived from the opening motifs. A short development section, including the folk dance "hocketing" round the band and a slightly disjointed 10/8 section leads to a restatement of the fugal chorale from the beginning before a frenetic coda brings the work to a triumphant conclusion.Performance Notes:Percussion instruments required are Bass Drum, Suspended Crash Cymbal, Glockenspiel, 2 x Tom-toms, Snare Drum, Tambourine, Tam-Tam, 2 x Timpani (G-C, C-F), Triangle, Wood Block. All cornets will require metal stratight mutes and all except soprano require cup mutes.     The Sword and the Star

    The Sword and the Star was written in 2006 for the Middleton Band at the request of their Musical Director, Carl Whiteoak. The inspiration for the work was the band's badge, which features a medieval archer. The town of Middeton's historical link with the symbol of the Archer came from the English victory at the Battle of Flodden in September 1513, where bowmen from Middleton and Heywood under the command of Sir Richard Assheton played a vital part in crushing the invading Scottish army. Sir Richard captured one of the Scottish commanders and presented the prisoner's sword to the St Leonard's church in Middleton in recognition of the town's contribution. As long time Lords of the Manor, the Assheton family crest was for centuries featured in the coat of arms of Middleton council, and when Middleton became part of the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale the black star from the Assheton crest was used to represent Middleton in the new borough's coat of arms. Hence the title The Sword and the Star, for a piece which attempts to give an impression of the town as it was then and as it is now.The music is in three short sections – a fanfare, a lament and a bright scherzo – and simply aims to contrast the medieval hamlet of Middleton with the bustling urban centre it has now become. The central lament features a Scottish song called "The Flowers of the Forest", written to mourn the loss of so many of Scotland's young men on the field of Flodden; the song returns in a much more positive form at the end of the piece.To view a PDF preview of the score please click here, and to hear a preview of the opening played by Middleton Band click here.

    Ring'd with the Azure World

    Ring’d with the Azure World was commissioned by the Harmonia Brass quintet for their final recital at the University of Huddersfield in 2016.He clasps the crag with crooked hands;Close to the sun in lonely lands,Ring'd with the azure world, he stands.The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls;He watches from his mountain walls,And like a thunderbolt he falls.– The Eagle by Alfred, Lord TennysonThe music was inspired by Tennyson's poem reproduced above; it seeks simply to reflect the spirit of the poem. It opens in sparse, lonely mood as the eagle surveys the world beneath. The work quickens in three bursts using metrical modulation to disguise the actual moment of acceleration, reflecting the lazy energy stored in the circling raptor before concluding dramatically in a fall 'like a thunderbolt'. Tennyson's poem, although brief, has inspired much analysis and writing, and is notable for being written in the (then somewhat unfashionable) iambic tetrameter, indicating a foursquare emphasis reflected in the main theme of the music. This is heard first in an octatonic version and later in a purely tonal (if somewhat modal) version. The instrumentation reflects that of Harmonia Brass, a quintet composed of brass band instruments (two B flat cornets, an E flat tenor horn, tenor trombone and E flat tuba). However the music is also available for the more conventional brass quintet of two trumpets, french horn, trombone and tuba.

    Hunt the Hare - Elgar Howarth

    Hunt the Hare was written for and dedicated to the Cory Band from Wales and was first performed in New York as part of America's bi-centennial celebrations in 1976. Grimethorpe Colliery Band, from England, accompanied Cory on the tour, they both had mining connections and the tour was sponsored by the American Mining Unions.Elgar Howarth has cleverly combined the Welsh jig Hunting the Hare with a quintessentially English tune, A Hunting We Will Go. The work is in the style of a patrol with both bands sounding in the distance, gradually getting nearer and nearer until they pass and gradually disappear into the distance. However, the difference with this patrol is that it combines two tunes in two different keys. Elgar Howarth punctuates the English and Welsh flavour with patriotic tunes from both countries and also utilises bi-tonality to celebrate bi-centennial celebrations.

    The Smoke That Thunders - Andrew Wainwright

    David Livingstone was a Scottish missionary and explorer. From 1841 until his death in 1873, Livingstone explored the interior of central and southern Africa. His initial aim was to spread Christianity and bring commerce and ‘civilisation' to these regions, but his later missions were more concerned with exploration. This piece of music tells the story of the part of his journey that led to him discovering Victoria Falls.The work starts out in optimistic fashion, with the Scottish folk-song A Man's a Man for a', by Robert Burns, which Livingstone reportedly used to hum on his travels. The troubles and difficulties of his journey were great and the next section describes his battles with the local African tribes, who were suspicious of his motives.After surviving these assaults, numerous bouts of African fever and several skirmishes with wild animals, a more reflective section ensues, which describes the doubts Livingstone had about continuing his mission. This is epitomised by the hymn Lord, Send Me Anywhere, which Livingstone himself wrote.After much deliberation and prayer, Livingstone decided to carry on and the final section describes his journey along the Zambezi River, the triumphant sounds eliciting his elation at discovering the magnificent Victoria Falls, or as it is known by the locals, "Mosi-oa-Tunya", The Smoke That Thunders.

    The Dirty Duck - Dan Price

    The Dirty Duck is named after a public house opposite the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford and was commissioned by cornet superstar Tom Hutchinson.Composer Dan Price explains, "Tom was looking for a solo that was virtuosic in content with strong jazz influences and something of a crowd pleaser. The Dirty Duck was the end result. The piece sits firmly within the big band style, taking influence from the dance bands of the 1940s led by such greats as Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington and Count Basie."The first performance of The Dirty Duck was given by Tom Hutchinson with the Cory Band conducted by David Childs on October 1st 2011 at Wiltshire Music Centre. The work's premiere recording features on the commercial disc, Cory In Concert Volume II, performed by Tom Hutchinson with the Cory Band conducted by Robert Childs.

    The Meeting of the Waters - Ralph E. Pearce

    The Meeting of the Waters is a traditional Irish toasting song, which tells of the meeting of the two drinks as the toast is carried out. Ralph E. Pearce has skilfully adapted this beautiful and somewhat sentimental melody as a cornet solo. It is not a direct arrangement of the song, but rather a rhapsody that uses the tune as a basis for the basis of the work. After an introduction, the melody is presented twice, linked by a ruminative central section. This solo is also available with piano accompaniment as part of the Roger Webster Solo Series.

    Canticle of the Sun (Percussion Solo with Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Ellerby, Martin

    The Canticle of the Sun was commissioned by Birmingham Symphonic Winds conductor Keith Allen for Simone Rebello. The work is based on the canticle written by St. Francis of Assisi (1182-1226) whose ideas that nature and the material world were gifts from God and should be valued and appreciated. The brass band version was made especially for a studio recording by the Black Dyke Band conducted by Nicholas J. Childs with Simone Rebello on percussion. Duration: 13.00
