Faith Is The Victory (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Curnow, James
James Curnow wrote this march while completing his Masters degree at Michigan State University and unsurprisingly reflects the great tradition of American symphonic wind band marches. Curnow embraces the sound world of the great Mid-Western universities (Michigan, Illinois, Iowa and Ohio State) and the march styles of Eric Osterling and Clifton Williams. Several changes of tempo indicate that this is anything but an ordinary street march. The wonderful changes of key are also notable and propel the music towards an exciting finish.

The centrepiece of this decidedly patriotic and stately march is the Canadian anthem 'O Canada' although the original score (1932) refers to a different set of words ('O Canaan'). The anthem is presented in successively more ornate fashion in the trio section, the musical drama building like a Sousa march so that a da capo is not required. While now considered to be bit of a 'war horse', the march remains great fun to play.

St Julien is a town near the French/Belgian border which witnessed several battles during WW1. The composer Arthur W. Hughes (1870-1950) was born in Kingston, Ontario, and left home when he was quite young to perform with circus bands in US. He wrote several marches and a few other compositions but this one, dating from 1918, is the most well-known. The march also works as a fast circus march. Here it has been expertly arranged for brass band by Dr. Keith M. Wilkinson. Composed in 1889, The Thunderer is one of John Philip Sousa's most popular and enduring marches. Dedicated to the Knights Templar of Washington, D.C. - who had knighted Sousa three years earlier - this rousing composition showcases the composer's trademark blend of melodic strength and rhythmic vitality. Though the exact origin of its title remains uncertain, The Thunderer is musically distinguished by its bold use of military-style percussion in two central sections, and by the brilliant fanfares that crown the final strain. These unique features contribute to its dramatic flair and lasting appeal. This brass band arrangement, prepared by Dr. Keith M. Wilkinson for the 2009 summer concerts of the Brass Band of the Western Reserve, brings these elements to the fore. The score includes optional staging directions designed to enhance the visual and musical impact of live performances. Perfect for patriotic programs, ceremonial occasions, or high-energy concert finales, The Thunderer remains a stirring testament to Sousa's mastery of the march.
