Rooted in the sacred stillness of a French village on Christmas Eve, this suite by Martin Cordner draws upon traditional carols that have echoed through centuries of candlelit chapels and midnight vigils. Each movement offers a window into the Nativity story: I. Mystery: Noel Nouvelet (Christmas Comes Anew) opens with modal wonder, evoking the anticipation of Christ's coming and the quiet awe of Advent. II. Cradle: Entre le boeuf et l'ane gris (Between the Ox and the Grey Donkey) rests in pastoral tenderness, where the newborn Savior lies between humble beasts, watched over by angels and the Virgin. III. Joy: Il est ne, le divin enfant (He is born, the Divine Infant) bursts forth in celebration, proclaiming the divine birth with rustic dance and jubilant praise. Together, these carols form a musical triptych - moving from mystery to intimacy to exultation. Three Carols at Midnight invites listeners to step into the hush of a French Noel, where the sacred story is told not only in word, but in melody, memory, and light. Smoke Sketches - Daniel Hall
Smoke Sketches is Daniel Hall's first original work to be published in the Faber Music Brass Band Series. Daniel is one of the most gifted of the rising generation of composers writing for brass bands. Smoke Sketches was composed at the invitation of Brass Bands England for the Intermediate Section of the 2017 National Youth Brass Band Championships of Great Britain. This colourful, jazzy suite draws inspiration from the ancient art of gazing into smoke from fire to find stories through the act of divination. Into the Blaze suggests someone briskly fire-walking, barefoot, with unexpected sparks fizzling from the ground. A Lonesome Ember captures the fleeting life of a small ember, beginning insignificantly and gradually evolving into a larger being before disappearing into ash, while Spark of Light bristles with life and energy. Band Grade 3/4, duration 8 minutes.

Torsion (Score & Parts) - Simon Dobson
Torsion was commissioned by the Leyland Band and first performed on 23 January 2010 at the Royal Northern College of Music Festival of Brass, Manchester, by Leyland Band conducted by Jason Katsikaris. This colourful and dynamic work is the most personal and ambitious that Simon Dobson composed during his residency with the Lancashire brass band. The dictionary defines torsion as the state of being twisted and the composer interprets this as the imagined dis-torsions and con-torsions of Time, Light and Sound in three contrasting movements. Simon Dobson fuses the traditional brass band sound with drive and energy of pop and funk jazz with optional digitally distorted 'echoes' providing added aural confusion at the points of climax. Although composed as a substantial concert work, Torsion would also make a challenging test-piece for contesting brass bands in the elite divisions.

The title refers to the big radio telescope at Jodrell Bank in England. This composition is not exactly a symphonic poem, although it tries to give a musical portrait of eternity and infinity. 'Jodrell Bank' is a real classic of the brass band repertoire with its romantic style, its impressive climaxes alternating with quiet pauses and its sparkling finale. Peter York was above all a composer of film and theatre music and was very active in the world of entertainment and light music. Yet he had one musical hobby: composing for brass band even if he had no links at all with the brass band world. At first, he signed his brass band compositions with the pen name Ivor Gould but later used his own name. Among his most important compositions are The Shipbuilders Suite, Gallions Reach and Jodrell Bank.

HAPPY LAND (Cornet Solo with Brass Band Set) - Terry Camsey
This composition is a very challenging one for the soloist and requires the accompaniment to be subservient at all times. The soloist will find it helpful to, generally, adopt a very light and playful style. As a young aspiring cornet player, the composer was influenced by a number of soloists of that day, one being Del Staigers of the Goldman Band in the USA. Many of the musical motifs reflect that influence and it is hoped that this solo will, in turn, inspire the many aspiring cornet players of today.

This Gustav Holst piece contains three Carols: Good Christian Men, Rejoice, God Rest ye Merry Gentlemen and Come, ye lofty, come, ye lowly, (Old Breton Melody) with a little The First Nowell thrown in for good measure. It has been arranged here for the full brass band and has had light percussion parts added to complement. It starts with the band in full chord and then pairs down to solo instruments playing Good Christian Men monophonically. This piece has all of the essential elements of Holst's harmony and tension while retaining the joy of Christmas. It ends quietly and reflectively and works very well in large acoustics such as a Church building or large town hall.

A vibrant, rhythmic solo for trombone and bandLa Chica sin Nombre was written in March 2020 at the request of Brett Baker. He wanted something in Latin style so I chose to go for a Mambo-type dance piece. In obtaining the right percussion sound I would always ask for Conga drums and Mambo Bell/Timbales rather than drum kit. The piece needs to be played with an appropriate feel for Latin music. It should sound light and easy to play but has a few tricky moments- especially the cadenza-like sections from F to H. The virtuosic section at letter G can be cut if required.- Rob WiffinDuration: 4.15

For Free Mind, a light and dynamic piece, Marc Jeanbourquin drew inspiration from a gospel song, namely "Oh, Freedom", a post-Civil War African-American freedom song. In these times of crisis, the composer wanted to retain a positive and energetic spirit to symbolise the hope for better days. The four notes of the theme "Oh, Freedom" occur throughout the work and are brightened up by lively percussions, giving Free Mind a sparkling character that will lift the opening of a concert with enthusiasm. £119.95Genesis (Sinfonia quasi una Fantasia) (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Ellerby, Martin
One of the composer's most personal works, Genesis is cast in three independent movements but played in close (attacca) proximity to each other. Part One: Out of Darkness... quotes the German chorale Nun Danket (Now thank we all our God) text by Martin Rinkart (1586-1649) and the music by Johann Cruger (1598-1662) in a symbolic, somewhat cynical, style. Part Two: Les Chansons du Monde... (the songs of the earth or earth-songs) is composed with full attention to solo, duo and other combinations of instruments consistently in a cantabile style. Part Three: Into Light... concentrates on rhythmic agility and dance like qualities in a most exuberant fashion, bringing the work to a very positive conclusion. Duration: 14.45
