It incorporates the old Swedish folksong Britta at its heart, but otherwise is quite conventional in every aspect.Duration: 3.00Fanfare:This fanfare was originally written for brass ensemble, organ and percussion, under the title Fanfare for Europe, and was commissioned for a concert at the Royal Albert Hall, London, to celebrate Great Britain's entry into Europe. This work was commissioned by the London Borough of Redbridge with funds provided by the Arts Council of Great Britain, and was first performed at the London Festival of 1972 by the Redbridge Youth Band, conducted by John Ridgeon.Intrada is in three sections, the first and last being similar. The middle section unfolds an expansive chromatic melody, heard initially on the horns, but later in canon between cornets and trombones. The work is lively throughout and has strong rhythmic elements as its chief characteristic, including changing time patterns and syncopations.Duration: 6.00

A concerto of stature, graced with the composer's hallmark scoring, intense passion, and enigma! The Saroyan of the title is the American author William Saroyan whose tales inspired the composition. Saroyan, who one the Pulitzer Prize and turned it down, became known for loosly structured, impressionistic plays and stories stressing his belief in people's basic innocence. Elgar Howarth has set the standard of modern brass arranging, and his original works feature largely in the Winwood Music catalogue

One of the composer's most enduring works, Volcano was written for the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain in 1979. The composer writes: "While it is, of course, possible to listen to this piece with the erruption of a volcano in mind, it is also possible to interpret the title in a figurative sense - that is to say, as one might refer to a 'volcanic temperament'. Alternatively, some may prefer to listen to is simply as a piece of music. I would recommend the latter." Duration: 12:00
