£32.55Swan Theme from 'Swan Lake' (Brass Band) Tchaikovsky arr. Jack Lythaby
Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake is made up of folk tales from Germany and Russia, and tells the story of Odette, a princess turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer's curse. The ballet was premiered on 4th March 1877 by the Bolshoi Ballet company in the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, and despite its initial failure, has become one of the greatest ballets ever written. The Swan Theme depicts the magic and mystery of the lake, with the oboe (solo horn in this version) playing the famous melody, which returns in various guises throughout the ballet. Tchaikovsky's symphonic approach to ballet music was called "undanceable" by some critics after its premiere, but the score to Swan Lake has now become considered as the epitome of ballet music. £36.16Drink to me only (Flugel Solo with Brass Band) Trad. English Melody arr. Bowen
The title of this flugel horn solo derives from a 17th century English poem by Ben Johnson that begins 'Drink to me only with thine eyes, and I will pledge with mine'. Its familiar melody is attributed to Colonel R. Mellish (1777-1817). This solo setting was written for the New York Staff Band in 1991. Within The Salvation Army church, the melody is associated with a religious lyric by William Drake Pennick (1884-1944) that begins 'There is a holy hill of God, its heights by faith I see'. (The Song Book of The Salvation Army, No. 627). The New York Staff Band recorded the solo on its 1992 CD, Under Three Flags (Triumphonic TRCD 1050). St Julien is a town near the French/Belgian border which witnessed several battles during WW1. The composer Arthur W. Hughes (1870-1950) was born in Kingston, Ontario, and left home when he was quite young to perform with circus bands in US. He wrote several marches and a few other compositions but this one, dating from 1918, is the most well-known. The march also works as a fast circus march. Here it has been expertly arranged for brass band by Dr. Keith M. Wilkinson. This is a reflective and beautiful arrangement of the classic Gustav Holst Christmas carol and remains faithful to the Wilberg choral setting. VIEW SCORE PDF The Coventry Carol is an English Christmas carol dating from the 16th century. The carol was traditionally performed in Coventry as part of a mystery play called The Pageant of the Shear Men and Tailors. The play depicts the Christmas story from chapter two in the Gospel of Matthew: the carol itself refers to the Massacre of the Innocents, in which Herod ordered all male infants under the age of two in Bethlehem to be killed, and takes the form of a lullaby sung by mothers of the doomed children. Stephen Tighe has here given this well loved tune an update to allow it to appeal to a broad audience. VIEW SCORE PDF This arrangement of the popular carol Ding Dong Merrily on High is the first published work by BrookWright Music of English arranger Stephen Tighe. This accessible setting receives a fresh, rhythmic treatment, aided by the use of sleigh bells and tubular bells. The tune itself first appeared as a secular dance tune known under the title Branle de l'Official in Orchesographie, a dance book written by the French cleric, composer and writer Jehan Tabourot (1519-1593). The carol was first published in 1924 in his The Cambridge Carol-Book: Being Fifty-two Songs for Christmas, Easter, and Other Seasons. Woodward took an interest in church bell ringing, which no doubt aided him in writing it. The macaronic style is characteristic of Woodward's delight in archaic poetry. VIEW SCORE PDF Well-known English composer, Gustav Holst (1874-1934) wrote this choral fantasy in 1910, about five years before his renowned orchestral suite, The Planets. The piece was originally composed for SATB choir and orchestra and dedicated to the students of Morley College, where Holst taught music. In the years since, it has been arranged for various combinations of voice and/or instruments. This arrangement is in the original key and could be adapted for use with choir and/or organ. Christmas Day features three carols in their entirety: Good Christian Men, Rejoice; God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen and Come, Ye Lofty, Come, Ye Lowly (an old Breton melody). There are also references to The First Nowell. Although well-received initially, this work (like many of Holst's) was neglected for many years and has not been widely recorded. It is hoped that it will be useful for brass bands during the festive season, particularly in a large acoustic. VIEW SCORE PDF Cornish Fantasy was written for Kidlington Concert Brass's euphonium soloist Benjamin Abbott to perform in their Autumn 2021 series of concerts and contests. Based around a series of Cornish folk tunes, it pays tribute to Ben's Cornish roots, and in particular to his banding education with the Camborne Town Band. The solo opens with the 'unofficial Cornish anthem' Trelawny, which is followed with a series of virtuoso cadenzas. After these is an up-tempo jig in several segments, containing the traditional tunes Camborne Hill, Pendeen Jig, Newlyn Jig, Pencarrow, and Off She Goes, the latter two at a breakneck pace that carries through to a triumphant close.
