This rousing march by Dave Collins is a dedication to the remarkable group of volunteers - the unsung heroes - who, each year, organise and run the iconic Whit Friday brass band contests. They ensure that the heritage and tradition of this uniquely special event is not lost, preserving its ongoing and continued success. Its importance in the annual calendar to the players, supporters and spectators is vital to the Tameside and Saddleworth community. However, this mighty contest simply could not take place without the willing volunteers who dedicate their services year after year to keep this unique banding tradition going.Traditionally, on Whit Friday Morning, Hail! Smiling Morn (Roud #1346), also known as Praise Ye the Lord, is heard across the Saddleworth villages. This is where I have taken my inspiration, and the entire march is built upon quotes and references of this joyous work.The Stewards has many traditional elements drawing on the vast repertory of well-known marches, as well as some untraditional techniques and harmonies. The work aims to be a good test for the bands in its performance, but also fun and entertaining for the players and audiences alike - featuring a cheeky cornet solo, thunderous bass feature, and lyrical euphonium melodies, before concluding with a triumphant quote from the original source material.To you all who perform or hear this work, the stewards of the brass band tradition, HAIL! £29.64March from 'The Love for Three Oranges (Brass Band) Prokofiev arr. Wilkinson
This thrilling brass band arrangement of the March from 'The Love for Three Oranges' by Prokofiev has been skillfully arranged by Keith M. Wilkinson. This setting captures the essence of the original orchestral work, while showcasing the power and brilliance of the brass band. In 1918, Sergei Prokofiev undertook his first visit to the United States. A number of concerts of his works were held in Chicago, which were received very favourably. As a result, the director of the Chicago Opera Association, Cleofonte Campanini, commissioned Prokofiev to write an opera. It just so happened that, during his trip, he had written a draft of a libretto, based on the Italian play by Gozzi, L'amore delle tre melarance, adding some additional surrealism to the text. Given Prokofiev's poor English, and Americans unlikely to accept an opera in Russian, French was his final choice. The result, L'amour des trois oranges (or The Love for Three Oranges), which premiered at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago on 30 December 1921, conducted by Prokofiev himself. The March from this opera is probably the most familiar part and has been used by CBS in the radio-drama series The FBI in Peace and War. It was also used in films such as The Brink's Job and Prokofiev quoted it in the second act of his ballet Cinderella. VIEW SCORE PDF Nocturne for Brass Band & Percussion: The Lady with the Lamp was composed for the BrookWright International Brass Band Composer Competition 2020, the work later going on to be a finalist in the competition. The music celebrates the life and achievements of Florence Nightingale on the 200th anniversary of her birth. The work is structured in ternary form and is designed to be an engaging concert piece, accessible to both lower and upper section bands. Minimal percussion has been used and ossia passages have been added to accommodate all levels. The music imagines Miss Nightingale walking the wards at night with the contrasting sections representing her devotion to the care of others, the struggles and sacrifice of her service, and the lasting effect of her renowned achievements that are still felt to this day. The opera The Flying Dutchman (Der Fliegende Hollander) was first performed in Dresden in 1843, conducted by the composer, who had also written the libretto, and 27 years later became Wagner's first opera to be performed in London. The opera describes the search of a Dutch sea-captain for a woman who will be faithful to him. The very popular overture encapsulates much of the story-line of the opera, including the wild swirling ocean, a strong motif depicting the hero and tender music associated with Senta, the lady he seeks. This brass band arrangement was initially prepared for the 50th anniversary in 1983 of the GUS Band, which the arranger was successfully directing at the time. In 1936, Sergei Prokofiev was commissioned by Natalya Sats and the Central Children's Theatre in Moscow to write a musical symphony for children. Drawing from various sources, he created Peter and the Wolf, a work designed to introduce young audiences to the instruments of the orchestra. Prokofiev conducted both the Moscow premiere in May 1936 and the first English-language performance in Boston in 1938. In this adaptation for brass band, Duncan Wilson has abridged the original 25-minute score into a concert-friendly 18-minute version. All core material and principal themes remain intact. While the full band represents the character of Peter, the arrangement suggests seating the four other main characters (Bird, Duck, Cat, and Grandfather) slightly apart from the main ensemble. To enhance the performance, players may choose to develop their characters using costumes and accessories. £33.35Polka from 'The Bartered Bride' (Brass Band) Smetana arr. Rob Bushnell
Considered a major contribution to the develop of Czech music, The Bartered Bride by Bedrich Smetana is a comic opera in three acts that premiered, in its final version, in 1870; having not been a great success when the original two-act version premiered at the Provisional Theatre, Prague on 30 May 1866. The opera was part of Smetana's aim to create a native Czech music after the conductor Johann von Herbeck commented that Czechs were incapable of making music of their own. Whilst he avoided the direct use of folksongs, Smetana did use numerous traditional Bohemian dance forms, such as the furiant and the polka, leading to music that was Czech in spirit. 'Sold Bride', a more accurate translation of the original Czech title (Prodana nevesta), tells the story of two lovers (Marenka and Jenik) who want to marry despite Marenka's father's obligations for his daughter to marry the son of a wealthy landowner, Micha. Scheming, condition proposals and secret identities leads to a happy ending. The polka was not in the original 1866 version. A revision in October 1866 saw the addition of a gypsy dance near the start of act 2. But by the next performance in January 1869, this had been replaced by a polka. In June 1869, a new polka replaced the January version's (as well as being moved to the end of act 1) and this is the one that we know and love today. This arrangement is for British-style brass band, with *alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. Swinging all the way is a jazzy take on the most well known of Christmas tunes, Jingle Bells. We begin in a dark underground jazz club with the rich, luscious harmonies supporting the tune that we all know. But the melody is perhaps secondary to the timbres and dissonances of this darkly elegant ballad punctuated by the solo cornet, a contrast of styles between the joyous melody and sober accompaniment. As the work progresses it becomes more uplifting, with solo features from the trombone, before emerging into the bright lights of a big band set, with stride bass, crunchy punctuating rhythms and screaming trumpets. The arrangement ends where we began, after our exciting sleigh ride comes to an end. Few melodies possess the haunting beauty and instant recognizability of The Lonely Shepherd. Originally composed by legendary bandleader James Last for a solo project titled Filmmusik Ohne Filme (Film Music Without Films), the track eventually found its home on the 1977 album Memories of Russia. It was this recording that catapulted pan flutist Gheorghe Zamfir to international superstardom, reaching the Top 25 on the German charts and becoming a permanent fixture in the global musical lexicon. While the original album title suggested "films without movies," the track didn't stay "homeless" for long. Its evocative, melancholic atmosphere has made it a favorite for directors across decades and continents. This brass band arrangement preserves the ethereal quality of the original, the soaring melodic lines and rhythmic intensity of the finale offering a brilliant showcase of phrasing and emotional depth. £33.35The Piano Preludes (Brass Band) George Gershwin arr. Rob Bushnell
First performed by the composer at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York in 1926, The Piano Preludes (or Three Preludes) are a collection of short pieces by George Gershwin, show casing early-20th-century American classical music, as influenced by jazz. Gershwin originally planned to compose 24 preludes, wrote seven, performed only six publically and was further reduced to three when first published. The work was dedicated to friend and musical advisor Bill Daly. The first prelude begins with a five-note blues motif. It features syncopated rhythms based on the Brazilian baiao and minor-seventh chords throughout. The second prelude, which Gershwin said was "a sort of blues lullaby" consists of two sections: the first a "lazy" melody upon a steady beat of crotchets; the second the bass takes the melody, continuing with the steady beats. The third prelude was called "Spanish" by Gershwin, and features a question-and-answer type melody, starting in a minor tonality and ending in major one. £25.94The Three Kings (Euphonium Solo with Brass Band) Cornelius arr. Wainwright
This beautiful arrangement of the much loved tenor solo The Three Kings was made for the GUS Band and euphonium soloist Mark Giles, for the CD recording Christmas Fantasia - The Music of Andrew Wainwright (2013). The Three Kings, or Three Kings From Persian Lands Afar, is a Christmas carol by the German composer Peter Cornelius. He set Die Konige for a vocal soloist, accompanied by Philip Nicolai's hymn Wie schon leuchtet der Morgenstern ('How Brightly Shines the Morning Star'), which he erroneously thought was an Epiphany hymn. In fact, it is an Advent hymn in which the morning star is an allegory for the arrival of Jesus, not the Star of Bethlehem. In Cornelius' original second setting, the accompaniment was played on a piano but the English organist Ivor Atkins later arranged the accompaniment for choir, with the choir singing the words of the original hymn. The carol describes the visit of the Biblical Magi to the Infant Jesus during the Nativity and is also used as an Epiphany anthem.
