£29.41Fanfare from La Peri(Brass Band) Dukas arr. Rob Bushnell
La Peri is a one-act ballet by the French composer Paul Dukas, best known for The Sorcerer's Apprentice (L'apprenti sorcier) as in the 1940 Disney film Fantasia. Dukas was commissioned to write La Peri by the Ballets Russes, producing a Poeme danse en un tableau ('dance poem in one scene') in 1911; this become his last published work. With Natalia Trouhanova due to play the Peri and Vaslav Nijinsky to play Iskender (the name of Alexander the Great in Persian, who is scouting around Iran in search of the Flower of Immortality), the production was ultimately cancelled because Serge Diaghilev feel Trouhanova was not a skilled enough dancer to be partnered to Nijinsky. Trouhanova later hired Ivan Clustine to choreograph the music, with the ballet premiering at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris on 22 April 1912.The brilliant fanfare that precedes the ballet is often performed separately and is the arrangement available here. Arranged for British-style brass band, it has optional percussion parts as well as alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. Fanfare of Joy was commissioned by the Burbage Band (Buxton) and its conductor Steven Critchlow in 2017. Based on Joy to the World and The First Nowell, this spectacular work opens with a majestic brass fanfare, before breaking in a Celtic-style dance which builds to a dramatic conclusion. The fanfare opening serves to announce the arrival of something special. In this case, the fanfare announces the arrival of Christmas, a time of joy and celebration. The Celtic-style dance is a lively and energetic movement that captures the spirit of Christmas. The music is full of syncopated rhythms and intricate melodies, driven by percussion. The final movement of the piece is a dramatic conclusion that brings the work to a rousing finish. The music is full of excitement and energy, and a fitting celebration of the Christmas season. This rousing fanfare prelude for Brass Band and optional Organ by Kenneth Downie is based on the monumental hymn Now thank we all our God, which dates from 17th century Germany. The arrangement is featured on the CD Classic Hymns for Orchestra - The Symphonic Music of Kenneth Downie (available here) as a symphonic brass setting. The arranger writes: 'The depth of the words is underpinned by the grandeur of the music, so I have tried to reflect the same regal approach in my setting for brass band.' £33.08Fanfare Prelude on 'Richmond' (Brass Band) Charles Wesley arr. Andrew Wainwright
Fanfare Prelude on 'Richmond' was written for the inaugural Texas Brass Fest, held at Round Top Festival Institute on 27 May 2023, for the four premier brass bands in Texas - Austin, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio Brass Bands. It is based on the much loved hymn of the church by Charles Wesley, which is also known as 'O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing', the first verse of which reads: O for a thousand tongues to sing my great Redeemer's praise, the glories of my God and King, the triumphs of his grace! For maximum effect it is suggested that cornets and trombones are staged stood around the band, although if this is not possible then traditional band formation will be acceptable. Fanfares and Proclamations was originally written in 2015 by Steven Ponsford for the massed bands of the International Staff and Melbourne Staff Bands of The Salvation Army. This piece of music, suitable as a concert opener, makes use of the hymn tunes Miles Lane and Diadem, both of which are associated with the words 'All hail the power of Jesus name'. This arrangement by Ruben Schmidt is the exciting polonaise finale from the last movement of Tchaikovsky's thrilling Suite No.3 in G Major for Orchestra. This was first performed in Saint Petersburg on January 12th, 1885, at the fifth symphony concert of the Russian Musical Society, conducted by Hans von Bulow. The suite also was Tchaikovsky's first American success when it was performed by the New York Symphony Society at Carnegie Hall on May 7,1891. First intended as its own symphony, it became the most played and most successful of Tchaikovsky's four suites. The finale of the last movement is an invigorating polonaise dance to finish the suite. Tchaikovsky often enjoyed conducting this final movement as an independent work himself. £47.79Finale from Symphony No.3 (Organ Symphony) (Brass Band) Saint-Saens arr. Norbury
Saint-Saens' magnificent Finale from Symphony No.3 (widely known as the 'Organ Symphony') has here been arranged for brass band with optional organ by Kevin Norbury. It was recorded by The International Staff Band on its CD Manuscripts, although this version has been revised in places. Saint-Saens decided to add the organ and piano to his 3rd symphony as a pragmatic orchestration innovation. The composition of this symphony was probably started in 1885 and a first draft was completed in Prague in 1886. Saint-Saens later recalled its eventful genesis: 'The Symphony in C was three-quarters sketched out when I found it impossible to write the finale. I did not know how to resolve this situation, until one night I suddenly woke up and, in a sort of hallucination, I heard the whole finale, which I hastily wrote down in outline, knowing that if I went back to sleep without having put anything on paper, I would have forgotten it all the next day.' The symphony was first performed under the composer's direction at Saint James's Hall in London on May 19, 1886. This arrangement by Kevin Norbury can both function as a stand-alone brass band piece, and be performed with an organ by omitting the notes found in square brackets in the parts and score. Ever since the first performance in April 1742 in Dublin, Ireland, Messiah has been the iconic Christian oratorio. It is a work of genius with lyrics skillfully taken from the Bible by Charles Jennens and timeless music by G. F. Handel, and has been at the top of the Western musical canon for close to 300 years. For unto us a child is born comes roughly halfway through Part One of the oratorio and is one of its most popular choruses, being the prophecy of the birth of a Messiah (Jesus) found in Isaiah chapter nine. VIEW SCORE PDF Gobsmacked was commissioned by Ravnanger Brass Band (Norway). The composer Robbert Vos writes: 'Gobsmacked is composed as an opening or encore piece which, as the title already reveals, is meant to surprise or overwhelm the audience! After a brief opening fanfare, the main theme is introduced by the solo cornet and euphonium. An accelerando leads to a quick movement, where this main theme is transformed into a con brio. In this section there's a lot of energy to be unleashed and every band member plays a roll in creating that. Throughout the piece there are many surprises, for example some unexpected time changes, percussion effects to wake you and some trombone glissandi to make you smile. After a short and atmospheric reminiscence by the flugel to the solos from the beginning of the piece, there comes a brief percussion interruption which leads to a reprise of the con brio, but this time in slightly different form. This all comes together in the finale where a big accelerando will lead to an exciting close.'
