Excursion was the winner of the 2022 BrookWright International Brass Band Composition Competition. The composer Christopher Cook writes: 'In this short and effervescent study for brass band, I wanted to take the listener and players on a journey which moves from a soundworld of bristling, bubbling energy to a triumphant fanfare and finally a moment of repose. The initial fast flurry of notes, highlighted and emphasised by precise elements of percussion, informs the motivic development of the rest of the piece and eventually forms the basis for the textural backdrop to the filmic sounding melody heard around halfway through the piece. The unexpected final passage is intended to be a nod to works for brass band by Paul Patterson and Harrison Birtwistle.' The Nutcracker, for many, has become a must-see event every Christmas, often the principle of Christmas traditions that has been passed down for generations. The original ballet by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893), which premiered in 1892 was not received with the critical acclaim that befitted such as masterpiece, so he wrote two suites based on the music, and the popularity of the ballet soared, although Tchaikovsky would regrettably not live to witness the success. This arrangement loosely interprets five of the most well-known themes from the ballet in a quasi-jazz setting: March, Waltz of the flowers, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, Dance of the Mirlitons and Trepak. Fanfares and Proclamations was originally written in 2015 by Steven Ponsford for the massed bands of the International Staff and Melbourne Staff Bands of The Salvation Army. This piece of music, suitable as a concert opener, makes use of the hymn tunes Miles Lane and Diadem, both of which are associated with the words 'All hail the power of Jesus name'. £40.08Drink to me only (Flugel Solo with Brass Band) Trad. English Melody arr. Bowen
The title of this flugel horn solo derives from a 17th century English poem by Ben Johnson that begins 'Drink to me only with thine eyes, and I will pledge with mine'. Its familiar melody is attributed to Colonel R. Mellish (1777-1817). This solo setting was written for the New York Staff Band in 1991. Within The Salvation Army church, the melody is associated with a religious lyric by William Drake Pennick (1884-1944) that begins 'There is a holy hill of God, its heights by faith I see'. (The Song Book of The Salvation Army, No. 627). The New York Staff Band recorded the solo on its 1992 CD, Under Three Flags (Triumphonic TRCD 1050). £92.20Chorale Tangents (Brass Band) Kenneth Downie
VIEW SCORE PDF This magnificent work by Kenneth Downie was commissioned by Festival Brass Band of Belgium, and its conductor Manu Mellaerts. It was first performed by the band on 10th October 2010, in Mechelen, a beautiful old city in the province of Antwerp. The composer writes: 'The chorale in the title is the famous one associated with the words 'Now thank we all our God', dating from 17th century Germany. The words were written by Martin Rinkart and the music by Johann Cruger. The use of the word 'tangents' in the title can best be understood as variations. This is another set of variations, in the line of St. Magnus, Princethorpe and Purcell Variations. I still cannot resist the urge to present familiar material in an unfamiliar way! Hopefully, the listener can relate to these tangents, and experience some of the joy that I receive when writing them.'
